I'm not sure why I never watched this back in 2007, but have finally started watching this evening!
Up to the one where they just got married.

Smithy is a horrible character but I love, love, love Nessa!

I don’t get the relevance of the headscarf/shoe thing?

Richard Reid, a Muslim convert trained by Al-Qaeda, tried to blow up a transatlantic flight in 2001 with explosives concealed in his shoes

It's my 'go to' series also. I loved the first Christmas special, didn't like the last one at all. I'm hoping that this one will be a truly magical send off.

I'm jealous OP! I love all the characters except Stacey.

What I love about it is it's not always laugh out load or slapstick. It's often a slow burning comedy that comes to you again in some random life moment. For example if I ever hear the Smiths 'There is a light that never goes out' I can't stop smiling. Sometimes when someone is calling out a website I think 'women wearing wings'. I saw Coldplay recently and when 'Fix you' came on I couldn't help but laugh. There are lots of other moments in life where I think of it, no spoilers!

We saw Johnny Marr in concert earlier this year and he played There Is A Light That Never Goes Out and as soon as it started we both looked at each other and said the character’s name who is largely involved in that (trying not to give too much away).

We have family near Barry so have had a drive around past Gwen and Bryn’s houses and have a photo of the two of us outside Mick and Pam’s (who knew Billericay is so near to Barry?).
This is our dog in Marco’s cafe last year 😂

I just love all the mentions (usually by Bryn) of all of the things Nessa has done in her past, absolutely seriously 😆

ALSO, “Oh, Gav, I'm not being funny, but you gotta sit on my knee. It's the rules. Don't worry, I've been checked. I'm not on the register.”

Oooh I can't wait for the Christmas special.

What I need to ask of all you fans rewatching it or watching in readiness for the finale- what age do my kids need to be to watch it with us ?

We are currently watching Friday night dinner with them - 11 and 13
Is this any more or less suitable ?

I'd say the 13 year old may be ok but I wouldn't let my 11 year old watch it

Jellycats4life · 14/12/2024 14:16

Nessa:

I found out some things about Pete Townshend that I didn't like. And all I'll say is - and I said it to his face - where is the book?

Terrible parent alert! My kids have been watching it for years (youngest is 13). They love it 😬.

I think that some of the more adult stuff would go over the head of an 11 year old. (Well I hope so anyway.).

I love as well that it shows very ordinary houses, well the Welsh houses anyway.

@Aintnobodygottime I agree Gavin is a great actor. It's much harder be the straight character reacting to all the madness around. A good comedy needs that to counter act all the quirks.

@AreYouShittingMe you are right, they just accept each other. Its quite refreshing. If it was a MN story they would all be NC by now!! Especially Stacey she so deceitful yet spoilt, a particularly awful combination. Gav forgave her for lying about all her fiancés, there were some other stuff too, one major one I won't ruin for OP but i have to say I think he is a bit of a saint for being able go move on.

I'd forgotten he was in the Catherine Tate show for years - he was excellent in that too - as you say, a foil to the comedy lead - it takes real chops to be a good straight man/woman.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 14/12/2024 14:57

Oh my word. I’ve just worked out that Melanie Walters, who plays Gwen, was 47 when they filmed the first series. I’m 3 years older than her now!

When the series first aired I was 3 years older than Stacey!

Pottedshrimpy · 14/12/2024 15:12

Tell us you’ve watched on iPlayer and not on Dave (is it called U these days) they cut out all the best jokes and change some of the music in the Christmas special!

I was about to mention Nessa and the batteries 😂

I don’t get the relevance of the headscarf/shoe thing?

There had been in RL a terrorist attempt at bombing a plane using chemicals hidden in the heel of a shoe. The funny bit wasn't Stacey's racist assumption it was leaving Gavin to his fate.

The 'Billericay' house is actually also in Wales.

James Corden is notoriously a tosser but Smithy has so many of my favourite lines. Asking how many nurofen he’d need to finish him off, the American Boy recital with his sister, his Indian takeaway order… 😂

One thing that bugs me, as an Essex girl, is that all of the promo for the show mentions Barry Island but Billericay is all but forgotten. The contrast is what makes the show!

I suppose that's because it's actually all filmed in Wales.

Daisypod · 14/12/2024 15:47

The only bit I would find a bit much for children is where there two guests are having sex at the wedding and it's quite obvious what's going on

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/12/2024 15:41

I know that. What I mean is that the houses Gwen and Bryn live in are very ordinary houses, Pam and Mick’s is more expensive.

I've never seen it. How many episodes are there? Is it worth it? Is it dated? So many people have been talking about it I wonder if I should watch. I guess I was busy with a baby toddler in 2007 and following years...

It’s dated a little just by smoking and no smartphones. The episodes are only 30 minutes long. There are 3 series with 6 episodes and a couple of Christmas specials.

noodlezoodle · 14/12/2024 17:29

Oh my Christ! Obviously Pam is the best character.

I was watching an episode with Deano in it the other day, and suddenly realised he's the romantic poet in Ghosts 😮

I don't think it's massively dated obviously as pp said smoking and no smart phones it's still worth a,watch imo.

Oh I'm loving Nessa's past experience tales with famous people!
She looked super cool as a lorry driver and the Eddie Stobart story was so funny!
