Ladies, do you ever got to a bar alone?

You know like in the movies, they've had a terrible day so just head into a bar and order a drink then sit and play with it wistfully! Usually before a handsome stranger approaches bu that aside, I wondered, do people ever do that in real life? I certainly don't see lone women drinking in my town but wondered if it's maybe a city thing or is it just generally a movie thing?!

No, I used to go to cafes or restaurants alone, but not bars unless I was waiting for someone, or early for something and it was the only available place.

BlueRaincoat1 · 08/12/2024 13:53

I would prob be OK going to a hotel bar alone. But don't think I'd fancy the pub by myself.

MsXmasGGMasterTwat · 08/12/2024 13:53

I used to go to the pub alone in my village, I don't do that these days.

ohyesido · 08/12/2024 13:54

I have done, if I am waiting for my DH to finish work I’ll get a glass of wine and read on my Kindle alone in a bar. Never been hit on by anyone whilst doing so either

Eyesopenwideawake · 08/12/2024 13:54

Yes, wouldn't think twice about it. But I'm not a "lady".

FeelingSad2024 · 08/12/2024 13:54

Yes on a couple of occasions when away for work, I've taken myself and a good book to a bar or pub and had a drink by myself.

MaggieBsBoat · 08/12/2024 13:55

Hotel bars sure. I’ve been on business trips and then wanted to just sit and have a glass of wine, stare off wistfully while pondering my life choices. Sadly no handsome stranger has ever come and sat next to me. Yet.

Workingthroughit · 08/12/2024 13:55

I did on my birthday this year. I worked a morning shift and was meeting a friend at 17. Feeling unwell too. One of my very dear friends recently really turned on me, it has been so unpleasant. I had a prosecco alone with my book, send good thoughts her way, won’t deny cried a bit, then went on my way.

Mrsttcno1 · 08/12/2024 13:55

Yes I have and still would if I didn’t have a baby to prevent any alone time now😂

tedgran · 08/12/2024 13:56

Yes, done it since my twenties, seventyseven now !

username299 · 08/12/2024 13:57

The problem with a lot of films is that they're written by men and they just get women to act like blokes.

pinkdelight · 08/12/2024 13:57

I'll happily to a pub or bar (or restaurant or cinema etc) alone, but not in hopes of picking up a stranger. My own company is enough and I'd find it annoying if a guy started chatting to me in that situation. It's fine in movies but quite presumptuous IRL.

CleanShirt · 08/12/2024 13:58

Yes, I often pop to the pub for one on the way home. Don't see why I shouldn't just because I'm alone.

ilovesooty · 08/12/2024 13:58

Quite often over the years. More often abroad than here.

And I don't "act like a bloke" - whatever that means.

DelurkingAJ · 08/12/2024 13:59

I probably could now but I remember too well being in my early 20s in a bar waiting for friends and having to get rid of three blokes all of whom ‘just want to buy you a drink’. Urgh! And one wasn’t keen on a ‘no’ until my first (male) friend showed up. So I wouldn’t…learned behaviour.

Ginkypig · 08/12/2024 13:59

I have popped in for a glass of red or a pint on my own but not on a Friday or Saturday after a certain time of night normally (partly because places are packed and people are in night out mode) but I don’t play wistfully or get chatting to strange men like the movies!

Awrite · 08/12/2024 14:00

I did in my late teens and twenties. Usually if I needed to kill some time.

I'm my forties now and generally just want to be at home when I'm not at work. Wouldn't think twice about it though.

CandyCaneSpoon · 08/12/2024 14:01

No I never have and wouldn't but then I also wouldn't go to a restaurant or cinema alone

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 08/12/2024 14:01

I wonder what you’re hoping to learn about ‘ladies’, @SnowwDr0p?

AspirationalTallskinnylatte · 08/12/2024 14:03

Yeah, pint & a bowl of chips please!

Treeper22 · 08/12/2024 14:03

Yep, one of my favourite things to do in London (and anywhere). Being hit on by random blokes (including bar staff) is an annoyance though, as I like sitting alone and people watching.

reluctantbrit · 08/12/2024 14:05

Yes, on business trips or the odd short weekend away on my own.

Mix of hotel bar or just staying at a restaurant for another drink after a meal.

I normally have my kindle or a book with me, the only thing which happened was a lively discussion with a waiter about a book.

SnowwDr0p · 08/12/2024 14:06

I think in theory I'd like to do it but then the reality is I'd probably rather be at home with my wine! I've never done it and think it's something to try but could feel quite vulnerable to be seen drinking alcohol alone! I'm married so wouldn't be waiting for a handsome stranger to turn up but definitely get the feeling if a woman was drinking in a bar alone she would be the centre of a lot of male gaze.

But again I'm basing that on my locality and it may be more expected in other areas. Equally, if I had a local pub and knew there was always going to be peoole in there that I would know then I would happily go alone but it would be different yo walk into a random bar somewhere just like Tv/Films.

Yes, do it all the time quite happily and always have done. Also happy to go to the cinema alone. I like the peace of not having to speak to anyone.

GodRestYouMerryGentlewench · 08/12/2024 14:01

I wonder what you’re hoping to learn about ‘ladies’, @SnowwDr0p?

Well I'm not interested in answers from men because they absolutely do go in bars alone, so their answers I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️ Why not just write "I suspect OP might be a man" instead if skirting around it?
