My parents were married on Boxing Day 1949. Both been dead several years now, but I’ll be raising a glass for their 75th anniversary later.

PickAChew · 26/12/2024 13:19

MIL's birthday was Christmas eve and we ended up having her funeral the day after boxing day, a few years back. DH has, understandably, struggled with Christmas, since then.

Zonder · 26/12/2024 20:02

So many bittersweet memories at this time of the year.

cakeorwine · 27/12/2024 09:18

Interesting conversation about trying to "Out member" each party at the moment.

It's definitely going to be a very long 2025

I hope Farage faces questions about what he wants to see change and how he would do it. Some practical questions - and I think a lot depends on how Trump does and what he does in the next 4 years.

DuncinToffee · 27/12/2024 09:41

Trump is planning to invade several countries, Fartage is foxhunting and vat on private schools, I think that covers it for now.

Badenoch and Farage at each others throats gives Starmer a good chance to swoop in and get on with things and get some good comms out there.

I worry it'll be another missed opportunity through.

Is that the 'we've got more members than you' argument?

Fucking hell Shock

To counteract that a bit, here is the Telegraph with a positive story about immigration

https://archive.ph/ryMuH

Britain’s integration miracle is a beacon of hope amid instability

"Our immigrant population has almost doubled while our crime rate has halved....we seem to have attracted immigrants who, by and large, are prone to integrate and strengthen the social fabric."

It is Duncin

A very important argument that needs to had publicly apparently 🧐

I think even the Fail and Torygraph haven't been able to pretend this one isn't a scandal!

Ms. Gomez is spectacularly dim too, not realising that a vast number of "Americans" would view her as an immigrant just from her surname.

With a bit of luck she'll forget which end of a gun is the loud bit and do us all a favour ....

Not all crime has decreased.
Up to September 2024 theft against the person (Inc. Pickpocketing) 22% increase.
Other crime (non specific) up 3.6%.
Robbery (Inc. Mugging) up 3.7%.
Shoplifting up 19%.

Does rather beg the question as to where the corresponding decreases are, if overall crime is down.

Also, what exactly are we measuring with "crime". Number of incidents ? Value involved ? Is a million people being mugged and relieved of £10 equivalent to a single £10,000,000 case of fraud ?

Statistics - especially those seasoned for public consumption - are probably not a good starting point for serious debate.

I think the articles are talking about how over a period of time, the immigrant population has doubled and the crime rate has halved.

Are you talking about the same period of time - or are you just looking at recent year on year data?

MaybeNotBob · 27/12/2024 11:54

Oh dear, the Torygraph has let the work experience kids start writing articles again...

Even if there had been an increase in crime, it wouldn't mean a hill of beans without context. The increase could come from people like the (literal 😂) numbnuts who went a'rioting this summer.

The great thing about that idea, is it crashes head on into the "should we have a Royal family ?" debate.

I have no doubt that if the real powers that be wanted to make the UK another disconnected US state (like Hawaii but with worse weather) then the Windsors will be given their marching orders and the notion of Royalism will suddenly become the target of the medias wrecking ball.

As we know, only takes a 52/48 vote and they'd be gone.

From 2023 to September 2024. Obviously in some areas of the UK crime will be higher. I expect if you look over a longer period of time not all categories of crime will have decreased.

So both can be true - reported crime has halved over a longer period of time - but over a shorter period of time, some crime has increased in a year on year period.

What do you think the overall trend has been on crime - over say the last 20 years?

DuncinToffee · 27/12/2024 13:09

The CSEW data for example doesn’t include fraud and or computer misuse offences,

Where did you get the numbers from @2dogsandabudgie ?

Grown up data would at least have been presented as a per capita figure.

We also need to remember that all crime is madey-uppy, so just because something is "against the law" doesn't mean it's in the same league as something which is "criminal". For example saying something mean on Twitter may be a "crime" and recorded as such (thus boosting the police's eternal arguments for more money). However I really am not hiding in my home, afraid to go out because some cunt on Twitter may criticise my dress sense.

Returning to the other issue above (doing my bit for the UKs efficiency by combining posts 😀) ... for the UK to become the 51st state, it would need to adopt the US constitution. Personally I for one am keen to enjoy my second amendment rights and attend local groups to discuss my firearm of choice. However I suspect the opposition from the less enlightened might prevent such a move.

What do posters here think ?

Kier Starmer's brother has died.
