The hotel issue was not a result of Brexit. It was a result of the tories piss poor handling of Brexit and their policy of enriching their mates by slowing the rate of examining asylum claims.

I do agree that this emboldened Farage and reform though.

I know, I didn't mean it to sound like it was! Bad wording on my part.

Cat tax as per usual, from a few days ago. I was wanting to change my bed linen but the wee tikes had stayed ensconced there all. fucking. day. Hmm. And they'd done the same thing the day before. Xmas Angry

Maybe some people are taken in by Garage's man of the people look with his pint in hand, too.

Some may not want to support the Tory party that is led by a woman, or that the party is just almost dysfunctional.

I was intrigued by this from the last thread I think a lot of the Reform votes came from former Labour voters who would never vote Tory. I can’t get my head round a Labour voter who can’t bring themselves to vote Tory but managed to mandate Reform. What weird thing happens in someone’s head to do that?

It's been very much the opposite in the Northeast. The Tories famously took a load of Labour seats in 2019. In 2024 they went back to labour with reform a solid second. Some of the tory MPs engaged with their constituents well, others less so. Ultimately, the promised levelling up didn't happen, not even slowly, never mind overnight, the government gave us 5 years of utter shits how and reform swooped in with their promises of a new Spring.

This is what the Tory leader is saying, not sure if it resonates with her voters

Thanks for new thread. Tax attached. I think (sadly) there will be few Reform members in the Senedd after the elections- but I don't think they will be in the majority

Moon unit stuff. They must do better if they want to be a government.

I think people forget that it's nearly 5 years to the next election.
In the last 5 years, we've had Covid, war in Ukraine, a cost of living crisis, many Prime Ministers etc

5 years is a long time.

cardibach · 06/12/2024 12:56

Indeed @cakeorwine (I'm disturbed as ever by the suggestion I am required to choose between the elements of your user name 😀). If a week is a long time in politics, 5 years is immeasurable
Cat tax of Miss Perdita ensconced in her happy place.

@cakeorwine In Wales we have Senedd elections this Spring. The constant negative spin from mainstream media could have a real negative effect

cardibach · 06/12/2024 13:04

I’m concerned about the Senedd too. I feel a solid left wing coalition is the best we can hope for to be honest.

And we left the EU. Look at Europe now. The EU is living up to its economic giant, political Pygmy reputation.

I wonder at what point the EU Commiseion will realise that they need us (no doubt we need them). Because with an aggressive Russia it’s damn obvious and it’s clear that the EU must reform itself. Or it will die. It’s going to be populated by right wing leaders very soon. Adapt or die. I don’t think this generation of right wing leaders care about many of the EU’s long treasured rules regarding FOM or budgets.

Thanks for the new thread Duncin.
Mostly lurking but still massively appreciative of all the information and discussion from the regular posters!

How would the EU benefit from the UK re joining? all we ever did was oppose what they wanted to do.

The UK cannot or wont even impose tariffs on Chinese EVs, which the EU has done, if we were still in, we'd have vetoed that.

Anyway the European far right parties aren't as far right as our v own Tory party, let alone Reform, they at least still want to stay IN the EU, all our main parties are v happy to stay out.

& EU countries have PR and coalitions, squeezing out the right wing.

Its very difficult to stop Syrians crossing into Europe via a Turkey that is no longer welcoming, unless force is used...

I very much hope that the next 4 or 5 years are not as chaotic as the last few years...... though i fear its is a forlorn hope.

bombastix · 06/12/2024 13:31

I don’t see us rejoining. We are diverging. But we need a better relationship with them and they with us.

The EU has not managed to set effective EV tariffs; its manufacturers will still be outcompeted. For a much smaller economy like the UK our tariffs would have to be even higher.

Wow, the Romanian Constitutional Court has annulled the first round of the presidential elections after declassified information was published by the country’s secret services, indicating that there was “Russian interference” in the campaign that led to far-right conspiracy theorist candidate Georgescu placing first in the initial round of the presidential elections.

Does she realise she sounds a little unhinged?

All she needs now is a couple of paragraphs on covid vaccines and Bill Gates.

I don't think it will be the last time we see this sort of thing happening in Europe.

Just remember the drip drip drip of the last 25 years in the UK suggesting that courts are overrated and we don't really need judges who might obstruct THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE !!!!!
