Bit off topic but nonetheless amusing - Boris Johnson is promoting his book on twitter in full Santa costume

How the mighty are fallen

My conspiracy theory is MN pretends your comment hasn’t posted, making you post it twice, making you look like a dick who can’t work the internet …… Grin

I will wager a Christmas prosecco not a single loudmouth on that thread has read the Warren Commission report

I’ve watched JFK three times and would happily bump that up to 15 hours of my life watching various actors chewing the scenery (Tommy Lee Jones as Clay Bertrand a particular highlight) .There’s just something about it that makes the time fly by.

So a liar dressed as an imaginary character ?

The world may be on the brink of disappearing.

The simplest explanation fits all the facts.

The secret service, were forced to use a shit gun due to budget cuts. (This is clearly documented before the assassination. No woo involved). The issue they really hated was the hair trigger.

LHO fires. Lead secret service man instinctively turns towards the shot. (You can see where this is going). However his high powered rifle misfires in the direction of the motorcade and removes the top of JFKs skull.

One of LHOs shots goes into Governor Connally.

That's it. The inconsistencies of JFKs wounds with the pea shooter LHO had. The "magic" bullet that seemed to travel everywhere. The "second shooter" the Zapruder soundtrack alludes to. And then the obvious cover up as the government decide it's not a great look that their own parsimony resulted in POTUS becoming an ex-POTUS.

Subsequently the secret service were allowed to choose their own weapons. And on at least one occasion, LBJ stopped a motorcade and told the leading car to stay well in front.

Admittedly the illegal corpse snatching at gunpoint and botched autopsy don't help the cause of truth.

Hmmm. Government cost cutting leading to POTUS death. Could never happen now.

Elon Musk is 53.

The Rest Is History did a great series on JFK. Their conclusion? LHO dunnit.

The book I am reading on How minds change talk about a conspiracy theorist who changed his mind on 9/11 and the backlash he received from the community when he announced he had changed his mind.

People targeted his sister, his family, his employers. It was like they wanted to destroy him because "he was one of them" and he left the cult of the conspiracy theorists.

Occams Razor etc.

Personally I prefer my version. Which you will note still only needs one bad actor and the expected amount of official incompetence.

The appeal of conspiracy theories is they allow you the feeling of being "in the know" without putting any of the effort needed into it that experts do.

That said, there will always be people who are intelligent enough to say "I'm too intelligent to fall for a conspiracy theory" as they are signing that cheque for the crowdfunder for the latest scam.

Just look at the lack of any thinking (let alone critical) over a few drones being seen in the sky. I mean where else would you expect to see them for gods sake ?

Rummly · 23/12/2024 15:47

Yeah, so true about conspiracy theory and abject nastiness.

After all, we wouldn’t want any unsubstantiated and malicious untruths said about Baroness Owen, would we? Or about the bogus allegations made about George Osborne that were frequently repeated on MN and that are now the subject of a harassment action? Oh no.

Thank heaven Labour fans don’t indulge in unpleasant rumour.

🙄

That really is a stretch, go on, admit it.

No, it’s really not.

I think conspiracy theories are disgraceful. But I’m consistent.

ilovesooty · 23/12/2024 15:54

We wouldn't want unpleasant and unsubstantiated rumours about Keir Starmer's private life either, would we? Good to hear of this stated consistency of course.

No, we wouldn’t. Anyone who indulges in that deserves condemnation.

😂😂

I also had a quick rad of the first bit of that thread.

I love reading about CT. Not because I'm a CT. But because I'm very betrayed in the psychology of people who believe things so inherently against all scientific fact.

My favourite is flat earthers. Ime they just shout about how we are sheeples to when faced with questions about the moon and sun travelling around us and flight times between the 2 furthest points not matching up to between the middle points etc.

In fact - I've yet to laugh at one who can tell me which countries are at each end of the earth without using a round map flattened as their information! (Because then they can't plain why Oz to USA is a shorter flight than Oz to uk 😉)

SerendipityJane · 23/12/2024 16:06

(Because then they can't plain why Oz to USA is a shorter flight than Oz to uk 😉)

There are flat earthers out there who will tell you that the airlines are "in on it". I refer you to my point that invariably conspiraloons end up having to bolt on more bollocks to support the original bollocks they supported.

Either JFK or the moon landings are exemplars for this.

A pincer movement of the "big 3" of logical razors reduces most conspiracy assertions to tatters - leaving plenty of time for last orders.

Occams Razor
Hanlons Razor
Hitchens Razor.

There you go, my gift to the curious (if anyone gets that reference, they are indeed masters of they cryptic). All you need to take on fruitloops.

itsgettingweird · 23/12/2024 16:10

That's very insightful serendipity

I love the reasoning!

I actually have a book of conspiracy theories. It's not in any depth just a double page spread with glossy pictures of the most well known (including jfk!)

It's interesting to read but more explains what the CT theories are and what CT have said rather than giving any credit to them iyswim?

I find it all very interesting.

I can't remember exactly how it goes but 8 heard a saying once like "the simplest explanation is usually the truth".

I have a very interesting library. Plus a reading history that would easily see me locked up if the powers that be wanted. My DM had a dark mind (wartime baby) and my DGMs hobby was scouring graveyards.

I can't remember exactly how it goes but 8 heard a saying once like "the simplest explanation is usually the truth".

That's paraphrasing Occams Razor. Note the "usually" as it's a probabilistic assertion, not a deterministic one. Watch out for where it isn't appropriate too ... the simplest explanation for everything is "it's God wot dunnit".

Of course, Oscar Wilde (dear Oscar !) had his own twist when challenged about the truth of a matter:

"The truth is rarely pure and never simple."

Everyone is prone to biases. Especially if something seems believable.

I did post something a while ago that was attibruted to Mike Pence about abortion. It seemed so believable that it was the kind of thing he would say but it turned out to be misinformation.

But you didn't condemn them did you? you launched into allegations/Slurs made against Tories by, according to you, Labour supporters on MN.

Never mentioning out right lies made about Starmer and Rayner by known Tory MPs/Donors/Media outlets...

Had you not been pulled up on your BS, you wouldn't have have made your half hearted "condemnation" remark either.
