It's very interesting getting people to reflect on the reasons for their beliefs.

TBH on the whole they don't seem a very reflective bunch - or particularly 'well-informed' = polite euphemism

"I still can't shake the feeling that it's not Farage, but who follows him we need to fear."

I think it's the money behind Farage that we should fear. I highly doubt those people/organisations have the similar aspirations to ordinary voters - see Nick Candy and his admiration of the lifestyle of Dubai & Abu Dhabi (I assume he meant English immigrant lifestyle there).

This is what frightens me, I dunno probably feeling very pessimistic at the moment but really am thinking some very dark forces are spreading far & wide I have absolutely no idea how it can addressed I feel very unsettled.

Notonthestairs · 22/12/2024 13:26

I feel similarly @dontcallmelen
I think we are already feeling the impact of billionaire cash and influence - Legatum/Heritage Foundation/Koch/Marshall/Musk. heaven knows what can be done when they have already bought so much influence.

Interesting to see many of the most vociferous posters that were especially active on MN during the summer riots popping up again on the German thread.

PandoraSox · 22/12/2024 14:11

I agree
@dontcallmelen and @Notonthestairs

MN has been very odd the last few days, with some very unsavoury threads. There was one yesterday saying the Southport riots were caused by the unrest in Leeds a week or so earlier and had nothing to do with the stirring of racial hatred following the murders of the poor children. Thankfully it was zapped very fast.

I hope Labour change the law on billionaires and party donations, i know the right wingers will bring up 'union donations but they are voluntarily made by individuals, who actively sign up for their subs to go to Labour, its not the same at all.

Money buys influence and power, 100s of millions going to Reform, will be hugely damaging to our politics.

SerendipityJane · 22/12/2024 17:50

I see there is an attempt to float a narrative that the German attacker was really a deep-planted Islamist whose actions were an attempt to discredit AfD and the right. Sort of closing the circle of loopiness really.

DuncinToffee · 22/12/2024 17:56

Deep planted islamist, as well as a leftist hamas supporter Hmm

Some people will swallow anything uncritically when it aligns with their imagination.

Take religion, for example ...

It's not (yet) surfaced here. I have an eclectic feed 😎

e2a: I haven't been on the thread above, admittedly

It's bonkers. It began with a very thinly disguised racist agenda and the last time I looked the OP had started blethering on about finding a country where her sacred women's spaces were protected.

I had a look at that thread earlier and eventually decided it was not worth it. Let them stew in their hate.

And to be fair there's a lot of hate for them to stew in.

More than £100m was spent last year by local authorities and the government on failed efforts to block support for children and young people with special educational needs in England, according to analysis by the Guardian.
The enormous cost in legal fees and staff resources came after councils won just 136 out of more than 10,000 tribunals in 2022-23, a success rate of 1.2%, as record numbers of families took to the courts to challenge councils over agreements known as education, health and care plans (EHCPs).

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/dec/22/100m-spent-in-england-on-failed-efforts-to-block-childrens-send-support

Pointless waste of resources. But the worst of it is how damaging it is to children.

Good Lord, the anti vaxxers are crawling back out of their holes.

I presume HQ thinks it is beholden to us to report every single post??

The problem with conspiracy theories (indeed, arguably the definition) is the amount of of extra bollocks you need to start adding to keep the "fact" alive when the obvious questions are asked.

I have no doubt that there are inconsistencies in the narratives around well reported events. But that in and of itself proves nothing. And invariably when you start digging, you discover that the "smoking gun" never was.

Just for starters there is someone claiming that it was "impossible" for LHO to have aimed and shot 3 times with accuracy. So impossible that when the Warren Commission decided to put it to the test, a local sharpshooter was easily able to do it.

From Warren Commission on the timing of the shots —
It will be recalled from the discussion in chapter III that the assassin in all probability hit two out of the three shots … if either the first or third shots missed, the assassin fired the three shots during a minimum time span of 7.1 to 7.9 seconds. A series of tests were performed to determine whether the weapon and ammunition used in the assassination were capable of firing the shots which were fired by the assassin on November 22, 1963….
In an effort to test the rifle under conditions which simulated those which prevailed during the assassination, the Infantry Weapons Evaluation Branch of the Ballistics Research Laboratory had expert riflemen fire the assassination weapon from a tower at three silhouette targets at distances of 175, 240, and 265 feet. The target at 265 feet was placed to the right of the 240-foot target which was in turn placed to the right of the closest silhouette. Using the assassination rifle mounted with the telescopic sight, three marksmen, rated as master by the National Rifle Association, each fired two series of three shots. In the first series the firers required time spans of 4.6, 6.75, and 8.25 seconds respectively. On the second series they required 5.15, 6.45, and 7 seconds. None of the marksmen had any practice with the assassination weapon except for exercising the bolt for 2 or 3 minutes on a dry run. They had not even pulled the trigger because of concern about breaking the firing pin.

So: remove the "fact" that LDO could not have fired 3 shots in that time and the whole house of cards collapses.

I will wager a Christmas prosecco not a single loudmouth on that thread has read the Warren Commission report.

The only question we should permanently ask about everything, is: cui bono ? Because that usually leads you closer to the truth.

The CT thread is quite interesting, with a good balance. The more outre claims are being firmly debunked.
