We do a game at Christmas where instead of presents, we do useful gifts in bags for people to win. Things like mango slicers, those cards that double up as ice scrapers, that sort of thing.

Have you bought anything surprisingly useful that you use more than you thought you would that cost under £30 please? I really need some ideas this year!

@Alondra ooh yes the Nivea Q10 body firming moisturiser is one of my best buys this year!
It’s currently ‘buy one get one half price’ at Superdrug so I’ve stocked up.
(other retail outlets are available. Probably)

I've been using it for over 20 years. Few firming body moisturisers are this good for so little money.

Not very exciting on the face of it, but I use these a lot
Lattice Pastry Rollers – Set of 2 | Lakeland
DH likes pies, I don't like to buy shop made and I'm not that fussy on baking, but this is a simple gadget that makes homemade look good.

Likewise Gleener Fuzz Remover, De-Piller & Lint Brush | Lakeland

Not sure either of them are either gift inspiration or Christmas oriented, let's face it, they're not, but they're two practical things I use a lot.

Lattice Pastry Rollers – Set of 2 | Lakeland

2 sizes of lattice pastry cutter. One large and one small. Easily creates a criss-cross effect. For all kinds of pie and tart. BPA-free plastic. 7 and 12cm wide.

A “Tile” that you can attach to your keys etc to find them if you lose them.

A tool that you press down on an apple and it cuts it into segments (for fussy children)

Cat fur/lint remover. Only about £15
So satisfying and really well used in a house full of cats (or dogs)

OXO gravy separator jug -- not only skims out all the fat & strains out the bits it helps to make really good gravy from the roast juices. About £12
I use it regularly.

Does the cat hair thing work on carpet?

Does the cat hair thing work on carpet?

Fur Magic it’s called.
I suppose it might … but it’s only wand sized so wouldn’t be ideal for large areas.

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 28/11/2024 22:39

@Sunshineandrainbow we use one of these at work (cleaner) and it's amazing at lifting pet hair from carpets. So much so, I bought one to use on my sofas and carpets at home! And it's only £11 ATM!

Does the dash cam person have a link please? Do you need to get it installed or is it easy to set up? Thanks!

My contribution is a repeat of some of the others.

Thermal mug
Heated throw
Hooded blanket
Apple corer - also use mine to make potato wedges
Soup maker
Electric toothbrush

I also have a thing for wireless headphones in many different varieties. (But somehow still mostly end up using the old wired ones?!)

A battery case I bought from QVC , it has compartments (in foam) for your batteries and a charge check device .
Before we kept our batteries in a biscuit tin but this is so much easier

Oooh this is the kind of thing my husband would love! Just ordered one from Amazon, thank you!

DreamyMe · 12/12/2024 22:01

They are just discontinuing to make an eco version. It's something more commercial than domestic so not sure if they will make a 2L eco version.

Really incredible piece of kit. Would recommend

Another way to play it is like this:

Write numbers 1-however many people are there on pieces of paper eg. 6 people, write 1 on one paper, 2 on the next paper. Put in a box or hat. Everyone takes a paper.
Whoever has number 1 chooses a bag and opens it.
Whoever has number 2 has a choice to choose a new present or steal number 1s present.
Number 3 can steal 1 or 2s present or choose a new one.
And so on...
If someone's present is 'stolen', they get to choose a new present.
It's good to go near the end then you have the choice of all the already-open presents!

It's quite fun if several people like one present and it keeps getting 'stolen'. Also means someone might steal a present from you that you don't really want or already have - but they do actually want it and can make use of it.

This was the original game but we changed it this year because it takes too long!

Made it through all posts, thanks for the ideas everyone!

I've gone with:

  • garlic plate (because I find my garlic crusher hard to clean)
  • microwave rice cooker
  • Slimpal (which I know I suggested myself but my sisters will appreciate it)
  • USB coffee mug warmer
  • Defrosting tray
  • Trolley token
  • Luggage scale

Electric Heat pad from Amazon. Bought when I had pulled muscles in lower back hoiking heavy shopping out of boot of the car (like an idiot). I cannot put into words the comfort and relief! Costs pennies to run, have it on the back of the sofa and switch it on for a couple of hours in the evening. Fantastic.

I bought this when I broke my back three years ago and I swear by it! Like you it sits on my sofa and I use it if I get any twinges. Also if I’m cold had nobody else is it’s great for keeping warm
