Immigration, immigration, questions from the media Hmm

I’m watching a bit behind. He’s speaking well. He sounds like he means it and has some emotion for a change. He can often speak like the lawyer he is - logical and reasoned but not from the heart

I don’t care either way, I don’t need him to entertain me, but some seem to think it’s a bad thing to be ‘boring’.
I’d like more specific detail though.

cardibach · 05/12/2024 12:22

Peston is a condescending arse, isn’t he?

SerendipityJane · 05/12/2024 12:26

DuncinToffee · 05/12/2024 11:01

Starmer is delivering his speech very soon, Badenoch has travelled to the US to try and build links with Republicans.

Unlikely, but it's nice to imagine her being rebuffed with "We don't talk to losers"

Oh God not Robert Peston on the MN Labour naughty step. I thought he was one of your darlings.

Where on earth did you get that idea from? Wrong thread maybe?

I don’t think the focus on immigration is wrong. It’s correct. The numbers are unsustainable, the social consequences will multiply.

Anyway there is a lot to do all told. Good speech. He’s going to have get over doing press. It’s part of the job.

Notonthestairs · 05/12/2024 13:51

There are social consequences from cutting police numbers. From shutting Sure Start etc. It's the legacy of Austerity.

Which is what he said though. He said it’s a ‘foundational’ job of government and that his speech was about things that sit on top of those foundational things. He said they had laid out their plans elsewhere. Then was asked the same again because Rigby was ‘confused’. No sensible questions about the NHS? Or anything else in the actual speech?

ContactNightmare · 05/12/2024 14:08

The press are never going to be helpful but the message goes out. I think yes it’s true that migration is a foundational issue, and Labour shouldn’t be afraid to deal with it very directly.

Starmer needs to get brave. He will do himself a lot of favours if he talks about migration in the terms that people do. I don’t mean rabble rousing or silly racist games. I mean saying that we’ve got to look at upskilling our people, and an end to saying migration fills the gaps.

The above is what a lot of people want to hear. Investment in Britain and British people. It’s seems the conversation is edging in that direction, and you can see the government edging towards changes but it’s the grand narrative people want.

This really isn't a game of them and us you know.

SerendipityJane · 05/12/2024 15:22

Immigration is a lost cause. There is no number that will be acceptable to the shouty blackshirts, so it's not even worth engaging.

I find myself idly wondering (again) if the APOCALYPTIC HEADLINES FROM THE EXPRESS were actually more of a boost than a drag to the Labour victory. With a warm glow from the realisation that even if that were the case, they wouldn't change a thing. Brexiteers to the last !

ContactNightmare · 05/12/2024 17:06

Starmer is wise to not get on numbers. The press will do that for him.

I liked the James Bond crack - he could do with a bit more of that really.

It is so good watching our PM , he is the real deal.
I honestly believe we are seeing a possibly, truly great PM in the making.
That Byline times article on what has already been achieved was really good, thanks so much for posting @cardibach .
I'm going to make a note of some of them to take to my group lunch tomorrow, in case politics comes up.
I will be ready .

Alexandra2001 · 05/12/2024 18:33

Some good aspirations in there but....

On energy, i'd like to know how he can insulate the UK from energy price fluctuations unless we price energy differently, at our own rates and not at the European market rate.
We already produce around 50% of electricity renewably.

No mention of dentistry either, something that would make a huge difference to many peoples lives....& wallets if he wants people to feel better off?

Fillings are between £180 and £360, root canal starts at £780 plus a crown if needed....
Just to get a quote for work required is £100, so its not as if one can shop around first...

There is no NHS, not even a waiting list... Cornwall.

derxa · 05/12/2024 18:41

All these pledges relate mainly to England. It’s hard to muster any enthusiasm.

PandoraSox · 05/12/2024 18:48

Peston is one of our darlings? News to me. I thought he was a Tory tbh.

OP posts:
InMySpareTime · 05/12/2024 19:12

@Alexandra2001 increasing renewable generation and battery storage capacity would change the pricing structure of energy anyway, as energy is priced at the highest cost of any type used at a certain moment. The more moments that don't have any gas usage, the more the price will resemble the renewable cost.

Channel 4 News analysis by Gary Gibbon absolutely scathing.
Look I want the government to do well. It’s my country too.

What did he say?

He was bewildered by all the pledges, milestones etc. He didn’t attack specific policies.

Elodie09 · 05/12/2024 19:27

Hi @derxa. How are you feeling today ?
I remember that you were so angry recently and I am truly sorry if my last post caused you enough pain to write , I quote,
"I have no words."
Can you tell me what upset you ?

I was only expressing my opinion and we do not all agree on here!

He’s easily bewildered then. Maybe C4 should replace him with someone a little brighter.
