There is a thread on Louise Haigh in aibu, maybe take the discussion there and don't derail this one any further

No way! Are you really suggesting that if something is on the Mail then it must be true?

It's really not just that it is right wing. It's fair enough to have a mix of leanings in the press. But suggesting they stick to the truth 😆

Edited

Well, obviously not. But it’s as likely to be true - if it’s about matters of fact - as any left-wing outlet.

I’ve been answering questions put to me.

South Korea's cabinet has lifted the martial law announced by President Yoon Suk Yeol, according to the Yonhap news agency.

Yonhap is also reporting that the South Korean military has disbanded the martial law command.

Such a weird day in S Korea

In Georgia, it is day 6 of protests fighting stolen elections and Russian influence.

No I can’t. But if a national newspaper is running it I think we can safely assume that your salt can go straight back for its proper use.

He wasn’t just a Labour supporter. He is Glenda Jackson’s son, spent five years as her researcher and is a former GMB official. He’s steeped in Labour.

I know who his mother was, one would have to have lived in a hole to not know that! The only surprising thing is that he turned out to be such a twit.

Yes, something of a roller coaster day.

It won’t happen. The government can scarcely afford more spending on public services, let alone massive losses in manufacturing industry. They’ve taken away winter fuel payments but are willing to spend billions on loss-making steel? I very much doubt it.

The article’s interesting for its noncommittal writing up of the government’s plans. Looks like heavy-handed messaging to me.

Well, according to the Tories and i believe your good self... the black hole is a myth & there was no need for tax rises and cuts, as they left the economy in good shape... if thats so, then Reeves has billions kicking around to re nationalise....

Ah, now your conclusion about Hodges is an opinion. To which you are of course more than entitled. And I don’t attack you for it.

Others’ opinions might also be valid.

Interesting news and bad news for the Conservatives.

Tim Montgomerie who founded Conservativehome has joined Reform.

Tim Montgomerie was a sensible Conservative. He is a credible person to join Reform and that is very bad news for Kemi Badenoch.

Who will follow?

ContactNightmare · 03/12/2024 21:17

I don’t know! He was a very credible Conservative. My view is that eventually Reform will outflank the Conservatives and obtain talent that they cannot. Tim Montgomerie can set a proper narrative and policy. That is a big deal.

I'm now convinced you're just a wind up.

And back in the room...

Oh my word, you really think that! Incredible.

Notonthestairs · 03/12/2024 21:21

"Who will follow?"

Paul Marshall? Or is he already on board?

Would Farage really want competing voices like Jenrick/Braverman/Truss?

Next time Montgomerie is on Iain Dale I hope someone asks him what Reform expect to do about the GFA under their plan to withdraw from the ECHR.

It's a long way from compassionate conservatism.

Arch brexiteer and a bit of a Trump fan I believe

I’m sure it is. But they have got him on board to write some credible policy. Not that rag bag at the last election

Couldn't stand him... i hope he does for Reform what he and others, like him did to the Tories.
Represents everything that is wrong with the UK.

He was often on What the papers say and i saw him as quite far right.

ContactNightmare · 03/12/2024 21:39

It’s not a question of like. It’s more about what it says. Conservative Home was a quite wide umbrella for the Tory Party. The fact he’s left it is not a good sign for them. He’s never struck me as a fool.

There are some contributors that it is just not worth engaging with. I find it a better use of my time to scroll by them and read the more informed and thoughtful posters - not all of whom I agree with but from whom I learn some interesting insights, both on current and historical events.

I bet he received a very generous offer for his services.

Yes, thank you.

Those slavish political party boosters are so tiresome. It’s good to refresh our open minds, I think.

Us political party roosters are unflappable, even under provocation.
