Freakish to me means unusual or unexpected…

Freakishly means like a freak. Literally.

I guess all this banter hinges on whether GBs son is ok with all this. Is he?

Ihateslugs · 07/11/2024 20:38

Well, my eldest son is 6ft 7ins tall and my youngest is 6ft 4ins so I guess they must be considered as giants! I was above average for a woman but my husband was about average so both boys tower over us. Luckily they look very like me so I know they were not swapped at birth.

SabreIsMyFave · 07/11/2024 20:42

Verylazy · 07/11/2024 20:30

He looks way bigger than 6’2’’ in that picture so maybe it is an optical illusion.

Must be! Coz he looks about 6 ft 5 to 6 ft 6...

Nothing wrong with being that height, but it is taller than average.

Gary being a bit smallish doesn't help! Because it makes his son look taller than he would if say, Gary was 6 ft 0.

What a batshit comment. (And as weird as fuck!) 5 ft 9 to 5 ft 10 for a man is not short! 😂 What a ludicrous post! 😆

It is pretty short for a man though. My husband is the shortest man we know by some margin.

How can being the average be short? I’m 5ft 10, all my family is tall & friends as is DH & his family. I still know they we aren’t the norm.

@Lonelycrab being freakish doesn’t always have negative connections for me, you can be freakishly good at something either way GBs son is just tall.

Superworm24 · 07/11/2024 20:50

I saw this on SM yesterday. It all seems very light hearted and I'd like to think he's had a laugh with his dad about it. Some of the comments on this thread are ridiculous.

Mlanket · 07/11/2024 20:33

@lasagnelle Are you offended by freakishly tall, I think it’s quite a common saying tbh? DH is tall with freakishly sized feet (13) according to him. Would you prefer unusually tall? Uncommonly tall?

Yes I most certainly would. "Freak" is not a word that should be used when discussing people

As I said upthread, my husband thinks he’s 5’10. Our kids say he’s probably closer to 5’9. He is shorter than every single man we know. That’s a fact.

Perhaps we surround ourselves with above average types, but he’s spent his life as the short one.

Maybe you move in tall circles

Pandersmum · 07/11/2024 21:01

I’m pretty disgusted at the amount of negative X and general media content about a young persons appearance. The comments / memes are not all pleasant. Some may be trying to be funny but if it was my child who was being mocked I would be very upset.

GB chose well to keep his children out of the limelight and should be incredibly proud of his hard working and handsome son, who unlike many other ‘celebrity’ children have the strength of character to work hard and create their own life path in a demanding career path such as medicine.

What does it matter if he is tall? It’s a happy family photo and should be viewed as such.

Light hearted? Taking the piss out of someone's appearance?

They're not taking the piss. People are fascinated by large height differences that's all. His height is especially remarkable because he's Gary's son and so much taller than him.

Why did you say 'THANKFULLY my sons are taller than my 5 ft 10 inch husband?'

What's wrong with men who are 5 ft 9 to 5 ft 10 - or less?

Are they somehow inferior and less than?

Would your sons not have been good enough if they had been even shorter than your husband - like ya know only 5 ft 6 to 5 ft 7?

Disgusting comment really. Imagine being judged on your height, by your own MOTHER.

Literally gobsmacked. Confused Men who are shorter are not inferior to taller men as you are clearly saying! As I said, disgusting attitude from you!

I have a husband who has wished to be taller his entire life. Rightly or wrongly, a shorter man is not the ideal in many women’s eyes. His many times have you seen comments on here about short men? I know he’s not really short, but he’s shorter than all our friends and gets ribbed because of it.

He worried about passing on his lack of height to our sons. That’s not a bad thing. He also suffered from male pattern hair loss. He definitely doesn’t want to pass on this gene either. No young man wants to go bald.

Obviously, they’d be magnificent in our eyes regardless. But if you could choose, you’d say, can they be a bit taller than their dad who has experienced teasing and negative comments his entire life. He dated a tall girl when he was 18 who finished with him because of his height. He’s never forgotten this.

5 ft 9 to 5 ft 10 IS NOT SHORT FOR A MAN!

And you don't get to speak for 'most women!'

Honestly, your attitude stinks. You are clearly obsessed with tallness, and it's WEIRD.

You are obsessed with tallness. At least own it.

Rightly or wrongly, a shorter man is not the ideal in many women’s eyes.

And also, not all women think like you! You don't speak for me.

Your husband needs to speak to a therapist if he thinks he is short at 5 ft 9 to 5 ft 10. Your attitude is very likely not helping him!

MaybeItsBecauseImALodoner · 07/11/2024 21:26

Yep I find it funny too, the croissant one cracked me up. I highly doubt he's sat at home feeling picked on. And if he is he needs to stop being such a MASSIVE MASSIVE baby 😂

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 07/11/2024 21:31

My brother is 6ft4 I'm 5ft6, when we stand next to each other he towers over me. My Dad is 5ft8, my mum 5ft5 so not overly tall, my uncles are tall though. So the Barlow family must have some tall genes in the family somewhere.

As for Gary Barlow, my first thought was what well rounded children he's brought up. Much respect to him (and Richard Branson whose children also worked hard and had proper jobs before going into the family business, the daughter was a doctor) for not letting them ride on his coat tails, unlike several other celebs.
