Struggling to think of an actor I would cast rather than the dark haired chap that is playing him in Rivals, but maybe that's the point - he is sooo perfect his likeness doesn't exist

Rupert Penry-Jones, fifteen/twenty years ago. I appreciate we'd need a time machine as well.

When I read the books years ago, I always pictured Simon Shepherd as RCB, possibly James Norton now.

I hate blond guys so for me dark is actually better. But what about someone like Sam Claflin?

Although I reckon Eddie Redmayne could pull it off.

I wonder about Paul Bettany in his prime, if he went to the gym and got a bit buffer.

I know he's not blond but I always pictured him as Michael Praed when I read Riders and Rivals. Somehow I missed the blond bit.

Although I watched an interview with the actor and he was so lovely and seemed slightly flummoxed that he'd been lucky enough to be cast in the role it really made me warm to him. Jilly Cooper gave him the go-ahead apparently.

I also came on here to say Rupert Penry-Jones, although he possibly needs to be a bit bulkier than I recall. I idolised him in Spooks.
