Just heard on the news abroad he fell from the third floor off a hotel in Buenos Aires, if true it's very sad as he was so young and seemed like a lovely guy

This has really shocked me. I use TikTok quite a bit and in the past week videos about him have frequently appeared on my feed. He was trending and being relentlessly mocked for being “cringe” and compared to David Brent because of a 10 second dance he did while attending Niall’s concert last week. People were doing mocking impersonations of him, pulling up old videos of him being “cringe”, and commenting vile things on all his and his girlfriend’s posts.

I really despise how social media users join in the abuse of people on a global scale for often harmless personality traits, forgetting there’s a real person with feelings on the receiving end (recently it was Blake Lively who had the same treatment because of her lighthearted tone in interviews about It Ends with Us ).

Reports suggest he was intoxicated at the time or the fall. Don’t want to speculate but I can imagine he was really struggling- feel so sad for his family and young son. 31 is no age, poor Liam.

We can't know that. Plumbers can be troubled souls too. It's all about individuals and how their brains work and yes while circumstances exacerbate problems nature plays a huge part in how people cope.

I'm sorry for his family and friends but I hope this doesn't become a huge Cowell/ music industry witchhunt.

Yes please don't dismiss the mental health of plumbers

ahemfem · 17/10/2024 07:12

Fizbosshoes · 17/10/2024 07:09

I think fame (of any sort - and money) at that level, at a young age can be really difficult for an individual to deal with. Obviously there are well documented issues within the music industry - Britney Spears for example, but also a lot of young footballers struggle with mental health problems, gambling, addiction etc.

You don't hear about the plumbers though as they aren't famous

Sceptical123 · 17/10/2024 07:13

What I read last night it said the police heard a loud noise after they arrived, which indicates he ‘fell’ after they had been contacted for a man behaving drunk and aggressively.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 17/10/2024 07:16

Very sad news for his family and his son. So young😢

Flooding not flossing

As an aside, thank you for that explanation as I was about to google the meaning of an expression new to me!

Poiul · 17/10/2024 07:17

Poor bloke. I’ve been depressed before and used alcohol to cope. I scared myself when I look back and think how little self preservation I had when I was black out drunk. Never mind adding drugs into the mix. Liam probably wasn’t used to the drugs down in South America either.

Poor boy, you could tell he was a sweet guy.

Suddenfeelingofsadness · 17/10/2024 07:18

@ahemfem but plumbers also do not have access to huge sums of money, women, friends, free alcohol, drugs almost overnight from when they are 16 years old. I know that many people struggle with MH and addiction, but what we are talking about with famous people is a very different scenario.

  • public shame
  • free drugs and alcohol
  • no structure or no healthy routine (I.e. months on tour or filming, working 12+ hour days then months of nothing)
  • lots of money
  • the internet and reading thousands of opinions of you
  • family and friends being miles away or feeling unsure of who you can trust
  • being surrounded by adults when you are a child. Take Harry Styles hanging out at 17 with Alexa Chung, Grimmy, Caroline Flack, name one other 17 year old boy you know who hangs out with people decades older?
GiraffeTree · 17/10/2024 07:20

Just woken up and seen the news- I can't believe it.

I think you’re missing the poster’s point - she is not saying that plumbers don’t struggle with mental health issues. She is saying that the pressures of being a child star are a unique recipe for life long mental health issues and substance abuse.

He auditioned for the X Factor age 14. By the end of that year he was a global star. The law recognises that minors can’t consent in other serious situations yet a 14- yet children are allowed to start on a path that will forever alter the course of their life.

You can’t undo that level of fame once you’ve had it- a child star still gets followed in public places, get gossiped about, mocked online and taken advantage of by people wanting access to their money or fame long beyond the point that their music stops selling and they are no longer cast in films (I.e. Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Justin Beiber, Home alone actor).

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 17/10/2024 07:23

Oh dear. Very sad news this morning. He certainly seemed to be struggling. I agree that there was a swathe of press taking the piss out of him and then potentially a looming court case. If someone had a dependency on drugs or alcohol it would exacerbate the imbibing of that for sure.

Lots of love to his family and friends. Hope he finds peace at rest.

Yes, I’ve seen those videos too, mocking him for being ‘cringe’
Some people just love jumping on the bandwagon with things like that.
In one of them, all he’s doing is dancing to some music.

Social media can be a horrible place sometimes.

I feel really sorry for him. 31 is no age.

Josette77 · 17/10/2024 04:02

Really? You think child stars are no longer plied with drugs? Of course they are!!!

Agree. The casting couch is still a thing in acting and music. Youngsters are still given drugs and/or passed around by predators, some of whom were former abused youngsters themselves.

I would never encourage my kids into showbiz.

RIP Liam. Cannot imagine what his family must be going through,

Showbel · 17/10/2024 07:28

Miguelo · 16/10/2024 23:07

How the hell is it considered acceptable to post part pictures of someone’s lifeless body like that!? wtf is wrong them

The world is full of psychopaths. No compassion whatsoever
I can't think about it too much because it really messes with my head. But all I will say is, why people would want to look at any of those pictures is beyond me.
RIP Liam

Whenwillitgetwarm · 17/10/2024 07:29

There is a pool close to where he fell. Maybe he was trying to do that thing where people jump from balconies into a pool? I’ve heard of others who have died that way.

ThePoshUns · 17/10/2024 07:29

Such sad news.
The perils of fame at such an early age.
Thoughts with his family and friends.

Apparently this IS what happened. According to a voice memo from a person in the hotel circulating (in Spanish) - if it's true.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 17/10/2024 07:33

I don’t have an X account or Tik Tok but if what people are saying is true regarding people bullying him for dancing, I hope those trolls can live with themselves. I will never understand trolling. I would never be friends with someone who behaved like that. There is no excuse.

FeatherBoat · 17/10/2024 07:34

I remember reading an article written by Harry Styles mother where she said that he just went off to that audition one day and his family were saying

'ohh that sounds fun, what do you want for dinner and don't forget to mow auntie Susan's lawn next Wednesday afternoon'

and the next thing she knew he was gone and he never lived at home again.

Suddenfeelingofsadness · 17/10/2024 07:36

@FeatherBoat that's so sad. I think I'd be questioning if I did the right thing if I was one of their mums but at the same time, teenagers are so headstrong and she probably didn't think anything would come of it.

ificouldgoback · 17/10/2024 07:37

I can’t believe this, was a massive fan when one direction first came out. I feel sick.

SoupDragon · 17/10/2024 07:40

That's not quite true. He was 14 for his first audition for X Factor but 17 when he was in it with One Direction.

SupportingMH · 17/10/2024 07:40

@Scorchio84

You should read 'I'm glad my mom died' by Jennette McCurdy.

My girls used to watch I Carly and it was a shocking read.

Sorry - you’ve got this wrong. Abuse allegations were coming out which is the main reason people were turning. One of his ex girlfriends was writing a book about the abuse she suffered with him. He was threatening her about the book too.

31 is so young and leaving behind his son is a tragedy 😔
