Misty or Bunty?

MadeleineMummy · 09/10/2024 12:19

I used to love Misty when I was young. It had a massive influence on me at 10. All the other girls in my village read Bunty which was dire. I even became a goth and dyed my blond hair red and then black when I was 18 because of Misty as well as the ‘Sisters of Mercy’ and ‘The Fields of the Nephilim’.

Whatever happened to the comic?

I found a box of them in my mother’s loft when I was clearing it out and despite thinking I had read it for years, it looks like I only seemed to have a year’s worth of comics. Did anyone else read Misty and remember it fondly?

I do wish DC Thompson would start doing girl's comics again. I loved those Christmas annuals with spot the difference and random stories about ghostly travellers on buses or children who didn't know they were adopted.

I'd much rather DD had one of those annuals than the Barbie / Disney Princess tat annuals that are out now.

Needmorelego · 28/10/2024 10:59

@MabelMaybe yes every year when I am asked "What do you want for Christmas?" I have to resist crying out "I want a Mandy Annual".
😂😂

I think the day my letter was published in Bunty was one of the happiest days of my life.

@Whetherornotyoutry I wrote to DCThomson when I missed the last ever issue of Bunty. This was 2001 so it was still the days of handwritten letters. They send back a letter saying they were sorry I missed it and a copy of the final issue 😍

I'm still slightly jealous my best friend got a letter published I Mandy.

(It should be noted I never actually wrote in myself...)

Oh I loved these.

I think it was Bunty and Judy I read. Also,Twinkle, I think, when I was younger.

They were always years out of date though, read them at my nans, think they belonged to my aunty.

Does anybody remember the stories about Angel? I think she used to take in orphans and look after them. She was blonde and beautiful and wore a cloak over her dress and would be bending down to give bread to some street urchin.

I also remember reading quite a haunting story about a little girl in a hospital and she lost her Raggedy Annie doll or something, and another little girl gave her hers, but she turned out to be a ghost?

Oh and the Four Marys?

I love Misty. I loved Bunty too when I was younger. I’ve still got all the Misty annuals and they still give me joy.

I was a massive goth in my teens and 20s. Less so now I’m in my 40s with 2 small children, but I think it’s still obvious from my day to day dress.

Black is still my go to colour in my wardrobe.

There was a story about Miss Angel rescuing a girl known as the Brat, & at the end she’d renamed herself Hope.

Mandy for me - I had an uncle who gave me a subscription for my birthday. I wasn't cool enough for Misty

I was born in 1973 so just missed the Misty comic Mandy was my regular one every week. Sometimes id get Tracy as well. And Bunty and later on Nikki.
I did have the 1984 Misty annual which was bought for me at Christmas 1983.

And a few Mandy annuals and a couple of Bunty ones.

Started on Twinkle and then progressed to Bunty and Mandy. I remember the Bunty and Mandy story lines being about girls who made great personal sacrifices so that they could help others. I am not sure they were good for girls as they told them to put others before themselves even as great personal cost.

The willing hands of ..... Meg springs to mind from Mandy set in Victorian times

Anyone else remember Valda from the Mandy comic And her Crystal of Life

Yes - I think it was the same illustrator as Angel.

I had preferences for some illustrators over others, and some were more suited to more comic or darker storylines.

I think as an adult I shoukd like to know more about the illustrators, so I might do a bit of a hunt this evening.

Needmorelego · 28/10/2024 16:54

@JenniferBooth oh yes Valda was another classic.
It did annoy me that she always wore that tiny little dress even in the historical set stories (ie one in WW2) yet when they did "Girlhood of Valda" she wore ordinary 200 year ago appropriate clothes 😂

Needmorelego · 28/10/2024 16:58

@JenniferBooth Dudley Wynne was the artist for Angel and Valda.

Omg I remember that Raggedy Anne story.

Mistymorin · 28/10/2024 18:46

Yes, the Four Mary's!
Mary Cotton?? That's about it 😀

JohnTheRevelator · 28/10/2024 19:08

I don't remember reading Bunty or Misty, but I did read Jackie every week from the age of 10 until I was about 14/15. I used to love getting the Jackie annual every Christmas throughout the 1970s.

suburburban · 28/10/2024 19:10

Did Valda have Spock ears?

Thank You The illustrations in these comics were amazing.

JenniferBooth · 28/10/2024 19:45

Anyone else remember A Switch In Time from the Mandy comic. Melanie in 1984 meets Kyra who is from 2084 and is supposed to have time travelled back to 1884 but there was a malfunction so she ends up in 1984
At the end Melanie and Kyra find out they are great great grandmother and great great granddaughter

ConstantlyFuriosa · 28/10/2024 19:55

Misty was fantastic. It also used to come with free gifts stuck to the front - I remember once it had this cool plastic ring with a black cat on it. I used to love getting those freebies.
