Misty or Bunty?

MadeleineMummy · 09/10/2024 12:19

I used to love Misty when I was young. It had a massive influence on me at 10. All the other girls in my village read Bunty which was dire. I even became a goth and dyed my blond hair red and then black when I was 18 because of Misty as well as the ‘Sisters of Mercy’ and ‘The Fields of the Nephilim’.

Whatever happened to the comic?

I found a box of them in my mother’s loft when I was clearing it out and despite thinking I had read it for years, it looks like I only seemed to have a year’s worth of comics. Did anyone else read Misty and remember it fondly?

I started off with Twinkle and Pippin, but used to like Mandy and Bunty and Jinty. Then I got into Misty and loved it so much! I loved the spooky stories! Was gutted when it joined up with bloody Tammy and then faded out.

There was one story in an annual about a selfish girl who went to a party on the back of a boyfriend's motorbike rather than seeing her dying grandmother

Then she couldn't escape the party and she was spotted on bike with non one driving it. Really creepy but stuck in my mind

I thought this was a thread asking for advice on girl’s names!!! Very glad it’s not.

Me too!!
The woman in the Take On Me video was called Bunty Bailey.

I can't remember Misty much, only Bunty. X

southbailey · 09/10/2024 20:05

I was such a comic fan.

Started with Jack & Jill, went on to twinkle, then Judy which became Mandy & Judy. Bought the occasional Bunty as a treat.
I was reading them well into secondary school and loved Tuesday morning which was comic delivery day by the paperboy!!

Biggirlnow · 09/10/2024 20:09

No but I loved Bunty! I have literally all the annuals and about four years of the mag!

BusySittingDown · 09/10/2024 20:10

I think that Bunty would be a great name for a pet rabbit. Bunty the bunny.

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 20:13

@Sethera I read the weekly comic, the little monthly ones and the annuals. I loved my Mandy's. Favourite story was Miss Angel.
Foolishly they were all got rid of 🙄 but over the past decade or so I have been buying them back.

Misty. It was full of ghost boyfriends and girls getting trapped in sinister paintings.

There was a story's about a girl getting trapped in a painting in either a Bunty or Mandy annual too!

I loved Misty... "Stories from the Midnight World". My dad was very religious and disapproved so my mum would buy me them in secret. They were very strange and creepy.

You can still read the comics online at Cavern of Dreams. (Found that tip here on mumsnet!)

If you have any of the albums they are quite valuable. I've still got one which I put in my daughter'sbookcase to read when she's older. After realising it's value I took it back again!

Have you got the link to cavern of dreams? I would love to look at that. All I can find is a computer game when I google.

I thought I would eventually change my name to Misty, then I thought I would name a child Misty and then I had children and my life became too busy.

Omg I thought you were asking on opinions for a baby girl name from the title 😂😂😂

sharpclawedkitten · 09/10/2024 20:49

I think it was Tammy that had a story about a cure being discovered for a cold and it led to the world being taken over by an autocratic regime. It is a very hazy memory - not sure if anyone remembers it better?

When everyone was so keen for a covid vaccine it reminded me of that story and I did think maybe we should be careful what we wish for.

"Tick tock never stop go on and on in time to the clock". Not sure if that was the same story or a different one.

I have a Jackie annual from 1985. That's the extent of my collection though.

LaBorde · 09/10/2024 20:52

Misty!
Kept them all for years, and wished I’d held onto them now, as would have made a bit of money.
I bought one for DD about 15 yrs ago on EBay, but it didn’t appeal to her.

Whizzer and Chips was another one, that I enjoyed.

ODFOx · 09/10/2024 20:57

My Granny bought, rolled up and posted Jinty and Lindy to me for months. My mother would never have allowed my to have it if it were up to her.

ColdinSeptember · 09/10/2024 21:00

Misty! and also Wizzer and Chips, you could separate the comic into 2 parts!
I feel sad this generation who never got the real joy of magazines and comics.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/10/2024 21:05

I’m an idiot - I thought this was a baby name thread! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 21:10

Inspired by this thread I really hope in 9 months time there will be a little newborn Misty and her twin sister Bunty 😂

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 09/10/2024 22:21

I had a bunch of Tammy and Misty from my older sisters. Also Jackie. I remember loving the Bella gymnast stories, no idea how they would come across now.

I was terrified for years from a one off story, I think it might have been in a Jackie annual. A young family moved into a new house which was possessed by evil garden gnomes with glowing red eyes. Still don't like gnomes now, but I think that's how most people feel about them!

JesusOnAYamaha · 09/10/2024 22:29

Misty was great. It was like M R James, but for girls.

That and my Pan Books of horror short stories kept me going until I was old enough for Stephen King.

NCmybloodyfather · 10/10/2024 01:04

Thought this was a baby names thread 😂

RogueFemale · 10/10/2024 01:13

I loved Bunty. Then Jackie. Before full-on girlhood, I loved Cor! and Beano. Bought alongside packets of nasty UPF sherbet things.

Woah, looking at the prices on eBay. I am going to be bagging up and selling my Mistrys this week.

I tried to sell mine a few years ago and there was no interest apart from a woman from New Zealand who threw a fit when I said I wouldn't post them for free 😂

I threw them away in the end - definitely should have kept hold of them!

bendmeoverbackwards · 10/10/2024 02:24

I bloody loved comics!

I read Tracey and Tammy for a bit but my absolute favourite was Girl. Read it every week from the first issue around 1981/82 until I outgrew it. The joy of photo stories! Loved all the ballet or school themed ones. On-going story called Patty’s World that ran for years.

Some of the stories were quite creepy, I remember one called The Girl in the lake about a ghost of a girl who’d drowned.

Around the mid 80s a comic called Dreamer started. Then it merged with Girl. Eventually the ‘& Dreamer’ on the front cover got smaller and smaller then disappeared!
