Misty or Bunty?

MadeleineMummy · 09/10/2024 12:19

I used to love Misty when I was young. It had a massive influence on me at 10. All the other girls in my village read Bunty which was dire. I even became a goth and dyed my blond hair red and then black when I was 18 because of Misty as well as the ‘Sisters of Mercy’ and ‘The Fields of the Nephilim’.

Whatever happened to the comic?

I found a box of them in my mother’s loft when I was clearing it out and despite thinking I had read it for years, it looks like I only seemed to have a year’s worth of comics. Did anyone else read Misty and remember it fondly?

When I saw the headline I thought they were prospective baby names😂

Twentybottlesofbeer · 23/10/2024 17:42

Omg all these names. In the mid 80s, we used to go on holiday to caravan parks in Wales. I was allowed to collect the milk from the shop and had enough money for a comic too. Those thick holiday versions that came out in the summer holidays.

Omg. The little stories I was obsessed by them.

johndeer · 23/10/2024 17:52

I’m just relieved you’re not looking to give those names to a baby!! For me it was the Tracey comic. I loved it.

If that's the evil gnomes story i am thinking of, the family ends up being possessed by the gnomes and turning into gnomes themselves. The story ends with a new family moving to the house and the red glowing eyes of the 'new' gnomes. It terrified me. Unlikely to be Jackie as that was aimed at older girls who were into boys. Maybe Mandy or Jinty..?

Yes, that's the story. The gnomes play evil dangerous tricks on them and by the end they are watching the new family move in. I am sure they were a blonde family including a now evil baby in the mum's arms. All very Midwich. All our comics were chucked years ago, so doubt I will ever find out which one it was.

There was a gnome in my garden when I moved in and I was so creeped out I had to hide it behind the shed. Don't think we've been possessed, although the kids do have their moments.

Google says it was a story in Misty called "In an English Country Garden."

Ooh that's exciting, I always thought it was from Jackie, so never managed to find on google. Most of my comics were inherited from siblings, so I don't remember all the different names. Only the beano stands out as different. Plus it is 40 odd years ago!

ladygindiva · 23/10/2024 22:11

Neither. Twinkle.

Coconutter24 · 23/10/2024 22:16

When I read misty or bunty I immediately thought please tell me they are naming a bunny rabbit not a baby! Then read about the magazines…… wow memories came flooding back!! I had the bunty 1999 and still to this day I can picture the cover!!

Alltheprettyseahorses · 24/10/2024 10:01

Judy, Mandy and Bunty for me. My gran used to get them for me every Thursday and everyone in the family inc aunties and uncles read them when I'd finished. I used to get the little comic books too. My great-nan used to get Secrets and Red Letter and we all read them too.

I've been collecting vintage Jackie, Bunty, Mandy, Judy, Misty, Diana, Jinty and other annuals and now have 4 shelves of them. They're great! I found a Bunty annual with a story I remembered where young ballerinas danced for Princess Diana and Prince Charles which was great. I used to have loads of annuals collected from rummage sales and charity shops but I threw them all out which I regret now.

Another annual story I remember but haven't yet come across is a sci-fi one with 2 big muscly men in space fighting over a woman but 1 man was an android so the real man thought he was a shoe-in. SPOILER he died fighting the android man and the woman turned out to be an android as well. I wish I could remember which annual it was In!

I did buy those recent comic specials but I thought they were rubbish so didn't keep them. They were a bit weird and didn't have the feel of the originals.

Old pony annuals are also great. The horses and stables are so old-fashioned and gorgeous and they do things like make hay wisps for grooming.

That's interesting. I could have sworn I hadn't read any Mistys until recently but maybe my mum picked up an issue for me. Or maybe it was reprinted in another comic at a later date.

Its definitely that story though. The baby ... eek! The artist was brilliant. I remember they specialised in worn down hopelessness in other stories.

Boomer55 · 25/10/2024 09:26

Bunty, Jackie and one called Loving, although I don’t think the last one was published for very long. 🙂

Drivingoverlemons · 25/10/2024 09:45

I read Bunty, Judy and my mum’s old Schoolgirl’s Own!

Drivingoverlemons · 25/10/2024 09:47

Actually I think it was Schoolfriend that was my mum’s. We did have some Schoolgirl’s Own too but looking at the dates they must have been my Gran’s.

I do remember the Four Mary’s quite well. Was that Bunty?

Yes.

elozabet · 28/10/2024 09:10

I was curious so just looked up the one story that really stayed with me 'hard hearted Harriet'. And it was in Tracy comic . So clearly I bought Tracy! I'd forgotten the name

Tammy and misty merged in 1980 which was about the time I was buying the comics.

Mistymorin · 28/10/2024 09:16

I was a Bunty and Mandy reader. Then progressed to Jackie followed by Fab 208. I use to buy my comics/mags on Saturdays - those were the days!!

TotalEclipseOfMyFart · 28/10/2024 09:16

I loved Bunty (born early 80s).

mbosnz · 28/10/2024 09:19

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 12:37

@MadeleineMummy also in my mind I read Tammy for years.....turns out I probably read it for about 4 months before it folded 😂😭

I was a Tammy girl - all the way back in a vey small village in NZ! I was ropable when Mum biffed my box of Tammys.

Bimblesalong · 28/10/2024 09:46

I loved Misty mag. Thanks for the thread - mum is just clearing the attic so I’ve messaged her not to chuck them out if they’ve been kept!

I remember a story about a shark film being made with the young heroine experiencing a jaws-like death and the producer saying how marvellously she acted. Then the guy with the fake robot shark turns up for work …

FudgeSundae · 28/10/2024 09:47

I thought this thread was going to be about baby names and clicked on it in horrified fascination…

AllThePotatoesAreSingingJingleBells · 28/10/2024 09:48

I love Misty. I loved Bunty too when I was younger. I’ve still got all the Misty annuals and they still give me joy.

I was a massive goth in my teens and 20s. Less so now I’m in my 40s with 2 small children, but I think it’s still obvious from my day to day dress.

WorriedRelative · 28/10/2024 10:03

I had twinkle, my younger sister had bunty and she liked comics more and had them more regularly.

My Mum loved the cut out dolls and would happily buy the comics so she could do those. Recently someone bought her some as a set with vintage outfits on firmer card. She loved it!

Withtheday · 28/10/2024 10:19

Started on Twinkle and then progressed to Bunty and Mandy. I remember the Bunty and Mandy story lines being about girls who made great personal sacrifices so that they could help others. I am not sure they were good for girls as they told them to put others before themselves even as great personal cost.

Jackie! Yes, I progressed to that too! And Just 17!

I loved Bunty and Misty (am remembering a character called Miss T??)
