Misty or Bunty?

MadeleineMummy · 09/10/2024 12:19

I used to love Misty when I was young. It had a massive influence on me at 10. All the other girls in my village read Bunty which was dire. I even became a goth and dyed my blond hair red and then black when I was 18 because of Misty as well as the ‘Sisters of Mercy’ and ‘The Fields of the Nephilim’.

Whatever happened to the comic?

I found a box of them in my mother’s loft when I was clearing it out and despite thinking I had read it for years, it looks like I only seemed to have a year’s worth of comics. Did anyone else read Misty and remember it fondly?

I have loads of the annuals - many re purchased. All Judy and mandy from the 70s and 80s. Girl. And some of the Dianas. Plus misty. Love them still. Mandy has the most tragic orphans and spooky stories so it’s my favourite! My kids think they’re crap. 😂😂

That's a shame @Needmorelego Sad

I loved old girls comics so much that I decided to become a comic artist. Didn't quite manage that but I still draw as a hobby and I am VERY influenced by all the girls' comics artists.

I started out with Bunty but also picked up Nikki, Jinty, Judy, Tammy and Jackie. I was a wee bit young for Misty when it came out but have read it since. I also got loads of annuals handed down from Aunties. From them I read Girl, Diana, School Friend and Mandy. I still pick up an annual in junk shops every now and then. i also read my brothers comics. He was annoyed.

Once I got old enough I moved on to 2000AD, Crisis, Revolver and Deadline (which is where Tank Girl came from). It is so sad that the UK comics industry is so small now and there is nothing specifically aimed at young girls with comics stories any more. But there are still a few kids' comics that are hanging on.

I'm still reading 2000AD and I picked up that new Misty. It was very good albeit aimed at older readers this time. The publishers, Rebellion, which owns a lot of old boys' and girls' titles are really trying to revive our old heritage.

I read American, French, Korean and Japanese stuff a bit but the British stuff was best for me...

Misty. It was full of ghost boyfriends and girls getting trapped in sinister paintings.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 09/10/2024 17:03

I had Jinty, which hardly anyone remembers, so good to see a mention by @Staticgirl !

Bunty was the longest running one.
43 years and the 4 Marys never made it out of the 3rd form 😂

Can you name them though?

Without Googling??

onlyconnect · 09/10/2024 17:08

I loved Misty! Then it joined with Tammy, becoming Tammy and Misty but the Misty part became smaller and smaller in the title until it disappeared

I loved Misty and also read 2000 AD. DH bought me a Misty annual as a gift one birthday, I was delighted.

Sethera · 09/10/2024 18:57

I was a Mandy girl.

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 19:00

@Sethera me too.
Between my sister and me we read loads of comics but Mandy was my "main" one.
My mum just bought me a copy one day to see if I liked it. I often wonder why she chose Mandy as she was a Bunty girl herself. She had the first issue of Bunty apparently.

Sethera · 09/10/2024 19:12

@Needmorelego Did you ever buy the Mandy comic books? They got me through a few rainy family holidays in Wales!

BusySittingDown · 09/10/2024 19:20

I used to read Mandy and Judy when I was in primary school. I think it was M & J. I think it had been Mandy and Judy separately and then merged and then it was called M & J. My mum got a subscription for me. She used to pick it up from the paper shop when she got the paper and I used to read it after school while eating a packet of Rolos.

I used to get the annuals for Christmas. I wish I still had them! I love the memory of getting both the Mandy and Judy annual and settling down to read them on Boxing Day each year.

BusySittingDown · 09/10/2024 19:25

I used to love Buster as well. They used to do a bumper one in the summer, like a summer special, that was really thick. I'd often spend a week at my Grandparent's (how lucky was my mum, that she got rid of me for a whole week in the summer hols?) and I always used to get one to read at their house.

Dazedandconfusedma · 09/10/2024 19:35

I thought this was a thread asking for advice on girl’s names!!! Very glad it’s not.

suburburban · 09/10/2024 19:38

Loved Misty.

My main comic was Mandy but I also liked Tracey

I could read it now

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 09/10/2024 16:01

Don't remember Misty, but as a child of the 60s, I remember Mandy, Judy and Bunty, alongside Fab 208, Lookin and Jackie! Saturday morning, was a trip with Mum to the newsagents and comic time, alongside annuals for Christmas. Loved some of the stories and much more adult themes than comics today imo.

I vaguely remember an 'older teen's magazine in the 60's called Romeo?
My older sister used to buy it, and I recall one of the free gifts inside was a transfer that you could iron on to a blouse or a cotton handkerchief!

ChocNice · 09/10/2024 19:45

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 12:47

@ChocNice nah....Just17 never had awesome stories about Victorian orphans, ponies, boarding schools, switched at birth twins, evil stepmothers, cursed dolls.....

I would have been absolutely terrified by this as a kid!! The Beano was about as racy as I went in comics. Luckily there was also Smash Hits, J17, and back issues of Jackie annuals to find at jumble sales.
