Misty or Bunty?

MadeleineMummy · 09/10/2024 12:19

I used to love Misty when I was young. It had a massive influence on me at 10. All the other girls in my village read Bunty which was dire. I even became a goth and dyed my blond hair red and then black when I was 18 because of Misty as well as the ‘Sisters of Mercy’ and ‘The Fields of the Nephilim’.

Whatever happened to the comic?

I found a box of them in my mother’s loft when I was clearing it out and despite thinking I had read it for years, it looks like I only seemed to have a year’s worth of comics. Did anyone else read Misty and remember it fondly?

Don't remember Misty at all, I used to get Bunty and Mandy every week, then Girl and when I was older Jackie 🙂I have such fond memories, but we moved house many times so don't have any old copies of any of them.

My Grandad used to deliver to WH Smith and would pick up all the unsold comics and magazines. He'd bring me a pile every week, I read them all. I liked Mandy best.

honeylulu · 09/10/2024 15:51

I loved Misty... "Stories from the Midnight World". My dad was very religious and disapproved so my mum would buy me them in secret. They were very strange and creepy.

You can still read the comics online at Cavern of Dreams. (Found that tip here on mumsnet!)

If you have any of the albums they are quite valuable. I've still got one which I put in my daughter'sbookcase to read when she's older. After realising it's value I took it back again!

My parents didn't buy comics (yep, deprived childhood). I used to get a stash of Judy or Bunty for a few pence at village fetes. Binge reading them was great. Only problem was, I always ended up being minus the edition which had the conclusion for 3 or 4 stories. Although, tbh, most were somewhat predictable.

My brother (now aged 53 and 1/4) still has fond memories of Sheena, Slave of the Tennis Racquet.

I managed to get some Bunty bundles for my DC. Who entirely agreed with my assertion that comics were much better in my day.

i liked the one that had the cut out doll and clothes on the back.

Don't remember Misty, but as a child of the 60s, I remember Mandy, Judy and Bunty, alongside Fab 208, Lookin and Jackie! Saturday morning, was a trip with Mum to the newsagents and comic time, alongside annuals for Christmas. Loved some of the stories and much more adult themes than comics today imo.

ladymalfoy45 · 09/10/2024 16:03

Misty 'Thrill with chills from the Midnight World'.
I've got two annuals and a complete set of comics. #notselling.

DreadPirateRobots · 09/10/2024 16:05

I thought this was a baby-names thread for a hot minute and have never been so glad to be wrong.

GroovyChick87 · 09/10/2024 16:06

Was there another one that hasn't been mentioned on the thread? I remember going with my mum to the car boot sale every Sunday and I would come back with a load of annuals from previous years. I remember Bunty and Twinkle but there was another one, early 90s.

EBearhug · 09/10/2024 16:07

Mandy for me.

Many of them are available online, no need to buy on eBay.

GroovyChick87 · 09/10/2024 16:07

It was Mandy, should have googled first lol.

RVEllacott · 09/10/2024 16:07

Both for me. I then switched to Girl and then finally Just 17 where I learnt all sorts of grown up things... My Gran, who lived with us, paid for my subscription and whenever I asked to switch to a new comic she would have a look at it first to check it wasn't inappropriate. When I showed her a sample copy of J17 I vetted beforehand by ripping out the pages I thought she wouldn't approve of 😁

I thought this was about baby names for a moment

So did I
My first thought was 'bloody hell, the name bunty is making a comeback?!'
I don't remember misty but my mother used to buy mandy and bunty-i was only allowed to read them once she'd finished!
I had the odd copy of twinkle and an odd annual of all 3

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 09/10/2024 16:09

I loved all of the annuals and looked forward to them at Christmas. My dh often buys me a second hand one as a present and the nostalgia I I have re reading them is immense.

EBearhug · 09/10/2024 16:10

I have 2-3 years of Mandy comics, quite a few annuals, and also a fair run of the little books with a single story in.

CocoPlum · 09/10/2024 16:13

My grandmother bought 3 Misty annuals from a jumble sale to add to her selection of kids' books and toys ... I would scare myself reading them!

Pottingup · 09/10/2024 16:17

I read Tammy. Misty was amalgamated with Tammy and called ‘Tammy and Misty’ for a while before they quietly dropped the Misty. I used to love getting back from holiday and having three issues to read in one go from the deliveries while I’d been away.

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 16:20

I bought a pile of Mandy's from eBay the other day.
Tried for some Nikki's but was out bid at literally the last second. That was over a week ago and I'm still sulking.

minpinlove · 09/10/2024 16:23

I didn't read these but loved Jackie and couldn't wait for each new one. In the eighties they had an obsession with Suzie Soux and I thought she was the coolest person on the planet!

JaneJeffer · 09/10/2024 16:25

I used to read any of them I could get my hands on.

Did anyone else get the Diana Annuals? The illustrations were brilliant

It could have been, easily!😂

SongSungBlues · 09/10/2024 16:28

Oh nostalgia! I loved Misty, and missed it when it ended. I loved that genre of slightly spooky, unsettling stories. I never fitted in with the 'fashion & boyfriends' type mags!

Needmorelego · 09/10/2024 16:29

@JaneJeffer the Diana covers were beautiful. Unfortunately the older ones they were removable dust covers so old copies now have usually lost the cover 🙁

My parents always used to get me the Blue Peter annuals. I have a vivid memory in my mind's eye of the covers of a couple. Annuals had a lot in them in those days and kept you going for months.

LunaNorth · 09/10/2024 16:32

I loved Misty, but my favourite was Tammy.
