Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

@LabFab I think you are right, but again have to echo that this is not the thread for trolling..

When I visited north Wales for my 21st birthday I got told off for speaking english, refused food when I got ill, refused medical help.

I now live in Japan where I'll never receive half the racism there. I once asked a black mate about her experience in Japan - she's British - nothing so bad as Wales.

(Multiple reports of black racism were received )

Are you on the wrong thread? Why is racism in Wales being brought up on a thread about Florida?

please go somewhere else with your blatant lies about wales. No one refuses someone medical help and food because they’re English 🙈

Genuinely glad that everyone is safe (-2) and all the cats survived.

My brother, (lives in Florida coincidentally) did say that there was actually an overall reduction in fatalities compared to the same date in previous years, due to the mass evacuation, there wasn't much opportunity for gun crime last night.

Now.. once they've picked up the toppled crane and got the leaf blowers out.. likely their tourism is going to be more of a financial loss than anything else..

Such drama and hyperbole, everyone whipped into a frenzy.. weatherman crying..
I was amazed at all the mentions of my now cancelled Disney holiday.

Unfortunately not all of them were kind and I'd like to remind them that empathy works both ways, regardless of how trivial some may think my feelings were.. if they showed some empathy, they would have been able to understand a little of how I was feeling, while not feeling it diminished their own concerns or worries.

We've booked the Maldives so looks as though everything has worked out nicely, on the whole, for the vast majority concerned

You're honestly gross

RitaIncognita · 10/10/2024 13:07

Back to the subject of the hurricane (I hope), we came through very well. We lost power briefly last night, but it is on this morning. Some debris from pine trees in the yard to clean up, but that's about it for us. Friends and family near the west coast (we lived in St. Petersburg and Tampa for many years) that we have heard from have lost power, but their homes are intact and they are safe.

Some posters have expressed concern that the fact that Milton was not a bad as predicted will make people complacent. I doubt that. We in Florida know the destruction a hurricane can make, and we are used to taking precautions. For most of us, we take each one as it is predicted to be.

This storm, though not as catastrophic as originally expected, has and will cause loss of life, loss of property, and has and will be a catastrophic life-altering event for many.

How is that glib line the case, given the damage?

No one could possibly be this obtuse surely? I'd say 99% of the replies to you were in disgust, very few showed support.

I almost hope you are trolling rather than being so utterly tone deaf to all the criticism you've received on this thread.

But he doesn't know how many people died last night, they haven't gotten into the areas to find the bodies yet, what is he talking about?!

How has a thread about the hurricane in Florida turned into a thread about the (alleged) racism of the Welsh? Am I missing the connection?

I'm trying to figure out are they saying the Welsh deserved to be flooded because they are racist? Baffled tbh

KenAdams · 10/10/2024 13:19

Shall we just ignore the Wales thing and the poster on a wind up?

Friend has been in touch - still very windy where they are and they can't go outside.

We were lucky this time, but if we don't tackle climate issues we're just going to keep rolling the dice.

How are you still going on about your fucking Disney trip. I’m glad it was cancelled.

justasking111 · 10/10/2024 13:26

They're still looking for missing people after Helene. Will be similar after this storm. It's a slow agonising process.

DuncinToffee · 10/10/2024 13:28

St Lucie County, on the east coast of Florida, has confirmed that four people have died after tornadoes struck the area.

@GingerMaineCoon I care more about the dead people than people's holidays. Sorry. But that's a fact.

I’m actually not. You were trying to minimise the damage actually caused by Helene. I called you out on it. This poster is delusional - she didn’t have “vast majority” support. Her brother cannot know the toll of the current storm because the situation isn’t over and the impact from Helene still isn’t known so how could we possibly know? She’s been disgusting and distasteful and is now trying to bask in self righteousness when she has none. I don’t really care if you think “I’m beyond nasty” because neither of you seem to have a moral compass.

😢 that's just so sad.

One problem with a state where the weather is warm is so many homeless gravitate there. There's no-one to know where they were or if they are safe.

It’s awful isn’t it 😔 I just saw on BBC someone has left their dog tied up on the side of road!! Poor little pip. Luckily they were rescued but even if you can’t save your animal why decrease its chance of survival in such a horrible way

RitaIncognita · 10/10/2024 13:42

Speaking of the "kitties," to quote one poster whose name I will avoid mentioning, one of the nice things that came to light in all this, is that several hotel chains relaxed or waived their pet policies to shelter evacuees with animals. They actually likely saved lives (human, canine, and feline) by doing so; many people (me included) will not want to evacuate if they can't bring their pets.

GroovyChick87 · 10/10/2024 13:45

Just ignore them. They were never going to Florida. They don't have a brother in Florida and they aren't going the Maldives. It's just some stupid twat on the wind up.
