Hurricane Milton

Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

These people don't need to go and when they do, they will be taking valuable resources from those who live there. Also they'll be in the middle of a clean up if they arrive soon after. Selfish.

Keep your holiday to Hastings then and don't cry when it rains

DuncinToffee · 10/10/2024 12:25

From Sky News

The mayor of Tampa has told residents to stay indoors even though Hurricane Milton has passed.

Jane Castor said that while the city had "survived" the storm, she did not want to "lose anybody in the aftermath".

Speaking during a pre-dawn press conference, Ms Castor added: "One of the blessings for us is that we didn't see that predicted storm surge, that saved a lot.

"But it's not over... when high tide comes in rivers are going to flood."

She also praised households for complying with evacuation orders, which she said had "saved, if not lives, then a lot of injuries".

CaveMum · 10/10/2024 12:25

The pictures on the BBC from Tampa are terrible. The roof ripped off the baseball stadium, the crane crashed into a building (though why you'd leave a crane up knowing something like this was coming I don't know?)

Savingthehedgehogs · 10/10/2024 12:27

The Maldives rely on tourism for their livelihood and it may offer a ways they can survive climate change, just saying!

You only have to look on here to see that deaths have been reported, dozens of people have been rescued and the state is that badly damaged they've had to shut off access to some counties.

To think anyone cares about your trip to the Maldives is entitled

I care. She lost her dream memory

When north Wales was flooded, many acres it was catastrophic for several reasons.

It's sea water not fresh so the ground is affected,/poisoned. crops lost, wildlife lost. Cattle, sheep, drowned. Vehicles written off fear of corrosion.

The area was flooded for weeks.

Homes had a four foot tidal line. Those homes when the water eventually recede have to be treated for sewage contamination. Then in go the dehumidifiers. We had dehumidifiers hired by contractors from all over the country. This lasted for two years Families in hotels, rentals, holiday camps for up to a year.

There's obviously a shortage of contractors in a disaster which makes the whole restoration painfully slow.

Drains exploded, so roads dug up to replace them.

Elderly people actually died in the interim so never saw their homes again.

Anyone with a dinghy was asked to assist in rescuing people stuck in their homes including my husband, he was getting people out of windows and rowing them to safety.

Water is actually worse long term than wind

CaveMum · 10/10/2024 12:32

This footage of a "reverse storm surge" in Tampa Bay is scary. However the fact this happened means the area was saved from a "regular" storm surge.

These reverse storm surges are not like when a tsunami sucks the water out and then pushes it back in, this water has been "blown" away from the coastline and will steadily come back in as the winds move away.

When I visited north Wales for my 21st birthday I got told off for speaking english, refused food when I got ill, refused medical help.

I now live in Japan where I'll never receive half the racism there. I once asked a black mate about her experience in Japan - she's British - nothing so bad as Wales.

(Multiple reports of black racism were received )

Genuinely glad that everyone is safe (-2) and all the cats survived.

My brother, (lives in Florida coincidentally) did say that there was actually an overall reduction in fatalities compared to the same date in previous years, due to the mass evacuation, there wasn't much opportunity for gun crime last night.

Now.. once they've picked up the toppled crane and got the leaf blowers out.. likely their tourism is going to be more of a financial loss than anything else..

Such drama and hyperbole, everyone whipped into a frenzy.. weatherman crying..
I was amazed at all the mentions of my now cancelled Disney holiday.

Unfortunately not all of them were kind and I'd like to remind them that empathy works both ways, regardless of how trivial some may think my feelings were.. if they showed some empathy, they would have been able to understand a little of how I was feeling, while not feeling it diminished their own concerns or worries.

We've booked the Maldives so looks as though everything has worked out nicely, on the whole, for the vast majority concerned

You berk. You sound incredibly immature and lacking in both compassion and intelligence. That 'independent school' has a lot of heavy lifting to do, I would imagine.

'Booked the Maldives' Of course you did #maui #livelaughlove #classy

Back in the real world, my thoughts are with all of you on this thread with friends and family affected. Hope the morning brings some reassurance and relief for many.

emilysquest · 10/10/2024 12:40

@GingerMaineCoon I am not getting the connection of your post to the topic? Or what you mean at all really? Who refused you food and medical help? Who told you off for speaking English in Wales?

Maldives sounds an odd choice of alternative for children compared to Disneyland and universal studios in Florida.

fundsandfrolics · 10/10/2024 12:45

@labfab
Thank you, we are really looking forward to it! Won't be booking a rainy week in Wales that's for sure 👌🏻

Another irrelevant post 🙄.

This Is nonsense. There’s some anti English sentiment in some areas, but maybe it’s because of stupid comments like this as much as anything else?
What ‘racism’ do you claim to have experienced anyway? Someone speaking their mother tongue in your presence isn’t racism, incidentally.
But maybe start your own thread as it’s utterly irrelevant to this one.

sharpclawedkitten · 10/10/2024 12:47

Although if you regularly fly my sympathies will be limited - don't complain about a problem you contribute to, even if someone contributes to it more

Exactly. Going to the Maldives is hardly eco-friendly. And going in term time is entitled as well. No doubt the poster concerned goes ski-ing and drives an SUV as well. Some people just don't give a monkey's about their own kids' futures, never mind anyone else.

There is a Disneyland in Paris, why not go there on the train?

emilysquest · 10/10/2024 12:47

How has a thread about the hurricane in Florida turned into a thread about the (alleged) racism of the Welsh? Am I missing the connection?

sharpclawedkitten · 10/10/2024 12:48

In fact I do not know of one English person that hasn't encountered racism when visiting Wales.. has anyone here been welcomed? (That isn't Welsh)

Well I hate to disappoint you but I went to university in Wales as an English person and didn't encounter racism, xenophobia or anti-Englishness (other than a bit of banter over rugby but I don't care about rugby so it wasn't an issue for me in any event).

I know! I shouldn't have reacted really but it was a ridiculous accusation.

When I visited north Wales for my 21st birthday I got told off for speaking english, refused food when I got ill, refused medical help No you weren't. People do tell blatant lies on here.

emilysquest · 10/10/2024 12:47

How has a thread about the hurricane in Florida turned into a thread about the (alleged) racism of the Welsh? Am I missing the connection?

Because there's a certain class of people who think their struggles minor inconveniences outweigh the devastation this storm has brought

sharpclawedkitten · 10/10/2024 12:51

Savingthehedgehogs · 10/10/2024 12:27

Tourism is not going to help them survive climate change if they disappear into the sea!

Well if you’ve missed it, I have too.

Anyway, back to the topic…have we heard from any of those posters who are in Florida or who have family there? I hope everyone is ok and property not too badly damaged.

LabFab · 10/10/2024 12:53

I need to follow my own advice here, but fundsandfrolics is possibly probably just trolling the thread, (it's all in the name), and is best ignored from this point.

Seriously, this thread isn't the one.
