Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

Tornado warnings all over the Orlando area now. Osceola County (which is where a lot of the holiday villas are) has now imposed a curfew from 8pm their time. Hopefully my dad will now stay put instead of sending messages complaining that he's not been able to find anywhere to eat as his favourite restaurants are shut 🙄

How many times do those of us in Florida have to say that people don't have to go far to evacuate and that there is transportation for those who don't have their own? There are shelters open in buildings that can withstand the wind and the rain where people can be safe from flooding. There are shelters that take pets. There are shelters that are set up for people with disabilities and medical needs.
But getting people to agree to go to shelters is the difficult part. There are disability and elder serving agencies that are helping people evacuate or prepare. It is not everyone for themselves.

What would those of you living in Florida know? Surely you realise by now that the Brits, who have never had to face anything remotely like this, are the experts when it comes to disasters.

Honestly, these threads are always the same. There are posters who have genuine concerns, the rest are the usual crew who pile onto any thread about a tragic event with their faux concern and their views on what should/shouldn't be happening.

So the categories only measure wind speed and is largely useless when trying to relate that to storm surges. From what some of the scientists were saying yesterday, the sea rising has already happened and that water will essentially be pushed inland, so even if it weakens wind speed wise, the storm surge is going to happen as predicted.

Friends on the East Coast have got shutters up and are expecting a loss of power. The reporter on Daytona Beach was being sideways today (on that Fox weather channel I mentioned earlier).

I’m watching the webcam and the amount of people standing by the ocean taking selfies is horrifying.

@SuperBlondie28

People freeze to death in winter and die of heatstroke in the summer over here. A village near me flooded. People had only just got their lives back on track and it flooded again. We got a late, unexpected heavy snowfall in April one year. The farmers had just put the lambs in the field and lost hundreds of them, causing devastation to their livlihood. Yes other countries have it worse but that doesn't mean that we have to go through these situations with massive smiles on our faces.

What webcam? That’s worrying.

I’m watching it too, they are absolutely mad. Did you see the couple actually sitting on that wall and a huge wave come over them? Idiots.

Chipshopninja · 09/10/2024 21:41

Someone posted a webcam link earlier. It's amazing how many people are there mucking about doing selfies and Instagram poses.

The camera in question is at Key West not sure where that falls in relation to evacuation zone??

Velvian · 09/10/2024 21:44

I can't believe the amount of people taking their children to be potentially dragged into the sea on that webcam.

There is someone there now with their child!!

ListenLinda · 09/10/2024 21:46

it downgrading to a category 3 doesn’t make it any less dangerous. This is still a monster hurricane that will do catastrophic damage.
And to add a sucker punch, there are now reports of tornadoes.
Hoping that people make it through & are able to ride it out.

DontBiteTheCat · 09/10/2024 21:47

Screenshot of a little girl with her mother I assume in the top photo.

What goes through their minds??

How long before someone gets washed away?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 09/10/2024 21:49

I've been watching the tornado outbreak, some absolute monsters. The storm surge is also starting to come up and there are some cameras showing it.

Key West is about 250 miles away from Tampa. It's a LONG way away which is probably why people feel happy to do stupid things like that.

I've seen video from the Matlacha Bridge (which is a bit closer to Tampa) where a tornado passed through whilst they were live on air. Cars still driving over the bridge in the middle of it.. terrifying.

Aquariusmumma · 09/10/2024 22:07

Not sure if others had mentioned it, but apparently the police have moved lieutenant Dan to safety. Thoughts and prayers to all involved over in the US.

notanothernamechange24 · 09/10/2024 22:07

For those wondering about the staff at Disney and if they would be forced to stay. My understanding is that Disney treats its cast members and their families fairly well. Those who wish to leave can do so and those who need to evacuate can either leave or they and their families are accommodated at Disney itself free of charge. Disney resorts are some of the safest places to be in a hurricane.

TokyoSushi · 09/10/2024 22:09

We worked at Disney and lived through 4 hurricanes in Florida, as an employer they were amazing (we worked in one of the hotels) free accommodation for you and your family, free food, literally couldn't do enough for you.

Edited

What were the police cars doing there? They didn’t seem to be stopping traffic at all.

UtterlyOtterly · 09/10/2024 22:36

Sorry if this has already been asked, I have not read the last few pages. ITV news had a young mother who said she was not going to evacuate with her 3 year old daughter as "God would provide". Does the state not have powers to take those children to safety even if the parents want to stay behind?

Same for the idiots taking children down to the waterfront for selfies.

Climate does vary naturally but it's unequivocal that humans are also affecting climate and causing temperatures to rise. Hurricanes fuel off warm ocean waters, waters in the Gulf of Mexico are currently warmer than usual. Warmer waters mean more powerful hurricanes. We all should be doing our part, especially more developed countries who have higher carbon emissions per person than less developed countries, and have historically higher emissions, and who's emissions per person are artificially low because manufacturing occurs overseas.

Until we stop emissions from China, we are pissing in the wind. All emissions targets here do is outsource manufacturing emissions to places like China that can make stuff cheaper, in part because they have lower environmental standards.
