Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

Holidays.

Pleased about no fines as independent school.

FFs. There are people in the direct path of a hurricane with a severe threat to life and evacuation warning who can't afford to evacuate and even if they can could lose everything.

I can empathise with a holiday being cancelled. But there's a time and place to voice concerns.

Hint ..... this thread is not it 🤯

I actually feel ashamed that we British people (and Scottish, Welsh, Irish) frequently moan about a piddly bit of rain and cold.
We obviously have flooding sometimes which is bad but we still tend to moan too much about our normal weather daily

"British" is an umbrella term for Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish and English.
But otherwise I agree with you.

PetuniaT · 09/10/2024 20:01

This is the most powerful hurricane in over 100 years! What does that tell you? Does it make Labour's £22b investment in carbon capture look worthwhile? When you look at a map of the two tiny locations in the north of England and then zoom out to a view of the whole earth to include the Americas, India and China only idiots like Ed Miliband believe he/we can defeat the forces of nature and the phenomenon of Climate Change which has been going on since the Earth was created 4.6billion years ago.

Climate does vary naturally but it's unequivocal that humans are also affecting climate and causing temperatures to rise. Hurricanes fuel off warm ocean waters, waters in the Gulf of Mexico are currently warmer than usual. Warmer waters mean more powerful hurricanes. We all should be doing our part, especially more developed countries who have higher carbon emissions per person than less developed countries, and have historically higher emissions, and who's emissions per person are artificially low because manufacturing occurs overseas.

i am confident it will downgrade

As it downgrades will the storm surge reduce?

Growsomeballswoman · 09/10/2024 20:17

Just watching the news now. Saying that even though it's downgraded the storm surge is still going to be over 15.ft which will kill many people.

Octaviusoctober · 09/10/2024 19:34

How can I also building be hurricane proof I wonder?

What are the line man trucks for? And prisoners.. Do they get evacuated?

I think they use metal frames with concrete foundations and hurricane glass which I assume is like submarine/bullet proof glass (almost unbreakable).
Florida has really strict housing regulations for buildings as well

CaveMum · 09/10/2024 20:22

A Category 3 hurricane is still a monster with 100mph+ winds and significant structural damage to buildings.

@SuperBlondie28 so, British then 😆

and yes, we are lucky

I think ‘storm surge’ is a bit misleading as it conjures up an impression of a surge of water. What it actually is is the storm generates an area of low pressure, this effectively sucks the water up underneath it - like a bulge of water in the ocean. So as the storm approaches the sea level rises, like an extreme spring tide, not like a tsunami. There isn’t a ‘force of water’ - the sea level just rises and so floods across areas normally above sea level. The waves are different from a storm surge and will only really impact the coast though their impact can very destructive there. People who die from a storm surge will be those who can not get high enough or have to venture out into the storm and flood water and get harmed there.

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 20:14

As it downgrades will the storm surge reduce?

This was my hope, however I'm watching the BBC news channel and their experts are saying no, the category can essentially become incidental to the surge (the storm surge, it seems, depends on many factors like storm size and orientation of the coast line with the storm track).

BurntBroccoli · 09/10/2024 20:29

This is from the Zoom Earth app. Predicted Category 3 at land fall.

You're initial post was incredulous but god almighty this subsequent one is unbelievable

The fact that she is not ashamed is what is truly hilarious. Self absorbed people normally try to hide the fact that they are selfish. They don't generally admit it on the internet and then try to defend their views.

This poster has me baffled and concerned for us as a species😅

Venturing out in upwards of 10ft of water and sustained winds upwards of 100mph. Its just an unimaginable scenario 😔

RedToothBrush · 09/10/2024 20:41

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 20:14

As it downgrades will the storm surge reduce?

The size of the storm, angle of approach of the storm and how intense it became is more relevant to the size of the stormsurge as far as I can tell.

For example if it hits the coast at the same angle as a bay then it forces a huge amount of water into a narrow inlet and it has nowhere to go. If it hits the coast somewhere the coast line is straighter then the effect is more spread out.

The wind speed is a lesser issue in terms of how it affects the water. The wind speed affects the level of damage to structures.

AnotherBritInTheUSA · 09/10/2024 20:45

I can’t get over “Lieutenant Dan” staying on his little boat saying it’s the safest place to be and citing Noah’s Ark as an example. He is saying that if the water level rises 100ft then so will his boat. I can see he is as high as a kite but how does he not realize that his boat will be smashed to smithereens?

He says the only way he would relocate to a hotel room is if there was a woman there waiting for him!

MynameisJune · 09/10/2024 20:48

It’s already down to a 3 and it hasn’t made landfall yet. It’s bad but no where near as bad as predicted/expected and I think social media has a lot to answer for in the scare mongering of ‘cat 6’ storm.

Ian in 2022 brought 15ft storm surges. I’m not saying it will be pretty but it’s not going to be a once in a century event from what it’s looking like now.

LifeExperience · 09/10/2024 19:16

Evacuation zones are established by the state and the counties. They don't change with the storm, but what will happen is that different zones will be activated as the storm moves. Try googling the county name they live in and "evacuation zones." If they are in an evac zone call the local police on the regular line (again, google) and tell them the situation. They will get them out to a special needs shelter if they are not of sound mind.

Thank you so much for this. They are in the first block of housing NOT in the mandatory evacuation zone. They’ve been there for Cat 3 before (when they were younger and mentally fitter) but are now less mobile and getting anxious. It looks like the risk in their zone is mainly water rather than wind and they will be on the second floor so that’s something….. and the storm is still tracking a way north of them.

BurntBroccoli · 09/10/2024 21:04

Looks like it's changed direction slightly from tracking predictions and heading more of a North East route.
Cat 3 now.

Obviously I feel for the people there. That should go without saying!

This is a huge situation that is affecting people in many different ways.

We are all entitled to feel what we feel and I will not be shamed for being concerned about my holiday. If it was your holiday, you would be too, as much as you may pretend you wouldn't be!!

Such virtue signalling... and policing of what is deemed an acceptable concern, get over yourselves!!

So it's ok to worry for the 'kitties' of Florida but not be concerned for a very expensive and much looked forward to family holiday.

And to the poster that said at least we won't get school fines, you don't get fined in our school, it's independent so school fines were never a consideration thank you!

Oh dear. I was going to defend you and your original post, it’s obviously upsetting and disappointing to miss out on a much anticipated holiday but this post is unbelievable. Yeah I’m worried for all the bloody animals out there more than I’m worried for your loss of a flaming holiday.

Octaviusoctober · 09/10/2024 21:09

I know re lieutenant Dan. Maybe he is happy to go as it where.

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 21:15

Such a strange feeling to be going to bed tonight knowing that a part of the world I dearly love is at risk of just being washed off the map tonight.

It's so strange to think that by the time most of us wake up it'll have made landfall 💔
