Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

Why on earth would you assume all misinformation is to be chalked up to tiktok? I don't know if I'm a huge outlier here but it's not where I go to get the news, or at all really.

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 14:19

www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cr753r34n3rt

The BBC is showing just how deadly this is. For those that wish to pretend it isn't.

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 09/10/2024 14:20

"Wtf are you talking about?"

Your first post suggested the police had branded your friends, that they had no choice. Your second admitted that the police probably just repeated the mayors advice.

The police have driven around evacuation zones with bullhorns, advising those who haven't to evacuate. That's the more accurate, non TikTok version and I find it interesting that people choose not to go there first.

RitaIncognita · 09/10/2024 14:20

Some of them have no choice but to stay. They say to leave but where do you go?

Shelters

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 09/10/2024 14:21

"read my posts before firing off your claptrap."

I have. And please show me where I haven't said this is a deadly storm?

You've written about 10 spiteful posts focusing on anything but the actual hurricane, and putting down other posters. I guess that may have led to this impression.

People like this are making me angry. Why take such a stupid risk

Turns out they will be sharing nothing on their instagram.. this flight and the one after have been cancelled.

No doubt they will be sharing sad face updates from the Airport. Absolute tw*ts

FFS. I didn't 'admit' anything. I'm literally here sharing ACTUAL information from people who are THERE, who I spoke with. My posts are pretty easy to read - don't paraphrase my words to say something that I didn't.

I don't use tiktok ever, so stop projecting your crap onto people who are concerned for people they care about.

And STOP making into this your little platform - it's not the place or time.

LifeExperience · 09/10/2024 14:29

Floridian here. Lived through numerous hurricanes. Nobody is branded. Police drive through evacuated areas asking those who choose to stay to write their identifying information and phone number of next-of-kin somewhere on their body. The hope is that this will change their minds, but it is also to identify their corpse after the storm, because police/ambulances/firefighters do not respond to emergency calls from evacuated areas once the lockdown is in place, by state law.

There's currently a guy living on a 20ft. sailboat in Tampa Bay who is going to ride out the storm on the boat. Emergency services won't respond to such stupidity and risk their own lives, nor should they.

I've seen videos about him online (yes on the dreaded TikTok) and god it's sad. He's going to lose his life, and for what reason

Quite. Can that awful poster please read the room and go and wind up another thread.

Spiteful? Oh please.

I've never said it isn't deadly, of course it is.

I'm just acknowledging those posters who are actually in Florida, who live there, who are asking that the posters dramatically claiming that there are tourists still chilling in evacuation zones because they "want to be on the news" Hmm and that they should LEAVE because others have no choice, actually read their sensible posts.

They won't read those posts because they are swept up in the drama and they enjoy it. Sickening as that may be.

There are shelters and people can go to them. They may choose not to, but that has nothing to do with tourists.

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 14:34

I do love that the hospital allows staff to have their children with them during the storm. It must be such a comfort to the staff and allows them to do their jobs properly without being distracted.

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 09/10/2024 14:34

@LabFab read the room? Maybe you should do that. I'm worried about my own loved ones thanks. They have evacuated because everybody can.

The ones who choose to stay have not been branded but the authorities are attempting to scare them into leaving as a last resort.

There are several Floridians trying to say this but certain posters choose not to listen to them. Now why would that be if not for the drama?

He’s being evacuated - the chief of police intervened

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 14:37

@CoastalCalm oh thank god. As hard as it must be for him to leave his boat, that was a disaster waiting to happen

SquirrelSoShiny · 09/10/2024 14:37

I hope people survive this it really is a scary storm.

Why the heck should I leave? I'm not the one trying to make this thread about me and causing bad feeling in a thread that does NOT need it.

I have literally no idea about other posters. You seem to be one wanting drama, frankly. I have posted three time, briefly, and you immediately leapt on me and accused me of listening to tiktok news. You were - obviously - completely wrong.

Leave other posters alone. Stop escalating - no one owes you an explanation for their POV.

The vast majority of people will survive. Even those in the middle of the path. The high death toll from Katrina was still only a tiny proportion of those who stayed in New Orleans. By taking safety measures, including evacuation, there should be far fewer deaths.

That doesn’t mean I think people should stay! Particularly in areas at risk of flooding. If there was a 1 in 100 risk of dying in a local hurricane then if everyone at my local high school stayed that would be 13 unnecessary deaths.

Talkinpeace · 09/10/2024 14:52

The Hurricane that caused massive flooding in and around New York in 2012 was Sandy.
The storm surge in lower Manhattan was 25 feet.
My father lived in the last apartment in the "stay put" zone next to the "evacuation zone"
There was no power to 1 million people for six days.

After that storm, parts of Staten Island were returned to natural marsh. They will never be built on again.

DanielaDressen · 09/10/2024 14:53

So the bbc says it's 250 miles off Tampa, wind speeds are around 150mph and it won't hit for around 17 hours. I don't understand the maths!😳
