Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

"How many times do those of us in Florida have to say that people don't have to go far to evacuate and that there is transportation for those who don't have their own? There are shelters open in buildings that can withstand the wind and the rain where people can be safe from flooding. There are shelters that take pets. There are shelters that are set up for people with disabilities and medical needs.
But getting people to agree to go to shelters is the difficult part. There are disability and elder serving agencies that are helping people evacuate or prepare. It is not everyone for themselves."

@RitaIncognita you're flogging a dead horse. They are so swept up in the drama of it all and shitty TikTok that they actually want to believe there are people who cannot evacuate. Social media ghouls. Pretty twisted really.

Posters like @itwasnevermine sitting here in the UK saying we will have hurricanes exactly like this one soon. Will we? Really?

I wonder if you can back up any of those statements? Which tourists haven't left the evacuation zone? You don't seem to know anything about florida particularly with statements like anyone who visits June-November is stupid 🤔 and this one below.

"I'm sorry but people need some perspective. If you're able to leave (like tourists are), LEAVE! I don't feel sorry for those that are there by choice when people will die because they have no choice."

LongtailedTitmouse · 09/10/2024 13:57

New Orleans is on average 1.8m below sea level.

Did you miss storm Eunice which had hurricane force winds? The flooding and severe weather all over the country? That's with 1.4° of warming, let alone the 2° we're due.

And sorry but if you're going to visit Florida and not leave during a hurricane. That's on you as a tourist. It's unfair to emergency services.

I imagine they build relationships with them because it's cheaper to buy the storm footage from these enthusiasts than putting your own reporters at risk.

Storm Chasers have a certain degree of experience in terms of what civilians who can't evacuate can expect and what constitutes a storm to be worried about.

They are attention seeking thrill seekers, but as you say, they forfill a role that there is demand for, without responsible networks putting their own people (or more correctly their insurance liability) at risk.

LabFab · 09/10/2024 14:00

A couple of friends just south of Tampa resisted the evacuation notice until last night, when they got the name/number written on their arms. They're heading south/east and hoping to get to Miami area if their petrol holds out or they find some.

They've just finished a ton of work on their home, and it's right in the centre of the hurricane path, right on the seafront. That's bad for them, but far, far better that they're safe. I'm relieved that they've finally gone.

LongtailedTitmouse · 09/10/2024 14:02

I do wonder if the widely reported nightmare that was the Super Bowl evacuation centre for Katrina puts people off going to emergency shelters.

What do you mean when they got
their name written on their arms? As in when it was announced to do that? Glad they’ve got out in time

"All over the country"? Erm no, not at all, not even nearly. More hyperbole. It was terrible and devastating for some but nothing on the scale of this. Should I have evacuated then? I was on holiday in the UK at the time. Tell me, since I was so stupid, where should I have gone?

Also, which tourists are refusing to leave the evacuation zone? And who can't evacuate? You have Floridians telling you that everyone is able to leave, not everyone is willing of course. Yet you still bang on as if you know it all.

I'm shocked this isn't bigger news in the uk. Thousands of uk tourists will be in Florida atm surely? Won't they be closing the Disney/universal resorts? Are the uk your companies flying people home????

I thought this. There was a hurricane when we were in Florida (many years ago) but it was a stay home and get in the basement/in the bath/under the stairs job. Still we were quite rattled by it. It's such an alien situation to us.

I can't imagine how tourists are getting out or where they're going.

Dreadful.

A storm surge means the water rises like a tide coming in extra high, not as a sudden force like a big wave though there will be those on the coast too. Once the water reaches two foot the pressure on a building becomes dangerous, but if the water enters the building then it equalises that pressure on the walls (water inside applying equal force to the inside of the walls as that applied by the water outside) so collapse is unlikely. Hence for most buildings you don’t want to keep the water out beyond the first couple of feet.

The concern here is that around 50% of the population of Tampa bay are living in dwellings that are less than 10 feet above sea level, and the storm surge from Milton is predicted to be up to 15 feet. If people don't evacuate and stay in their homes they will drown inside their own homes. Even if they do leave, millions of homes will be flooded and ruined.

For corpse identification.

If the message doesn't get across from that then it never will.

The mayor of tampa has said that if you choose to stay behind, you need to write your name and identification information on your skin in permanent marker so that your corpse can be easily identified. Because this storm will kill people.

‘It’s corporations/goverments fault that I buy cheap unnecessary crap from Temu that I then throw out to landfill’

Both you and the government are points along the chain of causation.

CactusSnoop · 09/10/2024 13:54

I believe the devastation from Katrina wasn't because of the hurricane/wind itself, it was because the flood defences basically failed so they couldn't keep the water out.

Much of New Orleans is below sea level. The vulnerability was really brought home to me when I lived there for several years some time ago and realized that you had to climb up to the top of a levee to see the river. In Katrina, levees failed and the result was catastrophic.

StaunchMomma · 09/10/2024 14:08

It's truly frightening how misinformation is affecting people's lives on such a level.

People are likely to die because of blatant lies.

Time to start locking up people who spread this shit.

They had a visit from a police officer, along with the other 60 or so people in their immediate close neighborhood who also hadn't moved. That was they communicated to me, but it's more likely that the officer just told them to do it. They were pretty panicked at that point.

We were in Orlando two weeks ago when Helena hit. Luckily we were unaffected at Disney but only down the road, there's so much destruction.

I truly feel for these people. Some of them have no choice but to stay. They say to leave but where do you go? Most hotels/motels are booked up. If you have pets, you can't take them there. Plus it all costs money that some people simply do not have.

The US government are only giving $750 to help people yet they spend millions on wars each year. It awful.

You've just paraphrased what Trump said yesterday. You might want to fact check that. They don't just get $750, that's just what people are given initially for immediate needs.

That poster did not say they wrote it on their arms themselves. She said they had it written on for them, suggesting the authorities are branding people who stay. Tik tok bullshit.

And that's what I mean about the drama of it all that people are so indulgent of these days.

No, that's how you're reading it. I took it to mean that they had received the message to do that.

Why are you downplaying how deadly this will be?

I'm not. I'm saying that they can evacuate and people like you shouting and name calling at tourists and claiming locals have no choice but to stay are enjoying the drama of it all.

That you are feeding these myths on social media because you enjoy the drama, sitting in the UK claiming storm Eunice was just like it. You want that to be true.
