Just asking because a few months ago someone I worked with suddenly stopped coming to work... then we found out he had been found guilty of possessing child porn 😬
He hadn't been working with us for long so didn't know him that well but he just seemed like a nice, slightly boring middle aged man! I know you can't ever tell by looking at someone but it just made me think anyone I know could be doing anything behind closed doors.....

Yep, met a lovely girl, polite and friendly. She stabbed someone in a drunken rage and did 5 yrs.
She has turned her life round and married and totally teetotal.

I knew a nice, elderly gentleman who had been an SS officer in WW2. When he got dementia he started telling people about how he tortured people to death in the war.

Pigeonqueen · 03/10/2024 20:30

My dds university tutor readily admits to his students that when he was in his late teens he battered his then girlfriend’s dad to death with a hammer. He now teaches criminology, says he’s reformed etc. Dd only found out after she’d had a few sessions with him. She was flabbergasted.

Newsenmum · 03/10/2024 20:30

Please don’t use the p word, it’s assault 🙈 sorry. Bugbear of mine.

And I don’t know but this kind of things always creeps me out.

CoastalCalm · 03/10/2024 20:33

I went on a couple of dates which turned into friendship with a lad I met in a bar , after a while he told me he had changed his name as he had killed his mother as a teenager. I tried to remain friends until he turned up at my house (miles from his home) unannounced one night and I couldn’t help feeling freaked out

Willowgirls · 03/10/2024 20:34

My DH plays a minority mixed sex sport.
There are quite a lot of competitions within the few counties it's played in.
Went to Lancashire and DH was drawn to play this lady in a team competition.
I felt there was something off about her.
12 months later we found out that she had killed her first born child as it was
in the way of her going out drinking. She had served 16 years.
She had moved from a county that doesn't play this sport.
It only came to light when one of their players went on holiday and got talking to someone who knew her.
As they say it's a small world. We don't understand why she didn't change her name.

what does this mean?

iloveshetlandponies · 03/10/2024 20:35

When I used to rent a council house I did a house swap with another young mum

She seemed lovely and we got on really well and even added each other on fb. And i used to see her at school etc as kids were similar ages

She did another swap and moved away and I didn't see her anymore

Then I read on the news she was in prison for manslaugher.

what does this mean?

Was waiting the same myself. What p word?

bluebluetoon · 03/10/2024 20:37

@OldieButBaddie They mean don't say "child porn" as that makes it sound like it's consensual. Call it images of child abuse

CurryandSnuggle · 03/10/2024 20:37

I think they mean it’s not child porn, it’s child rape. As porn implies it’s consensual content.

Porn.
Don’t say child porn, say sexual abuse of a child.

I presume @Newsenmum doesnt like the term “child porn”. I agree with her. They are images of child abuse.

roycroppersshopper · 03/10/2024 20:42

Man I knew not very well just enough for a casual chat turned out to have strangled his ex girlfriend.

NeverTooEarlyForChocolate · 03/10/2024 20:43

Yes. A friends husband seemed lovely. Knew him for a few years before they revealed he had been in prison for a violent rape.
I felt angry with my friend that she had allowed me and other women I care about be around him without knowing what he was.

Rowgtfc72 · 03/10/2024 20:45

Used to work with Ian Huntley and Maxine Carr. Unremarkable couple. Friendly and both quite quiet.

MrsJoanDanvers · 03/10/2024 20:47

Used to be a lovely family at the dc’s school. Then I found out the very affable dad had come out of prison for money laundering for his drug dealing clients.

magicalhammerhead · 03/10/2024 20:49

I used to work in a Supermarket and got chatting to a lady in her 50s or 60s who seemed nice enough. I spoke to everyone in the store so I didn't think much of it, but I couldn't help but notice that no one else spoke to this woman. In fact, they were quite rude to her. Then one day one of my coworkers pulled me aside and said "do you not know about Helen" (name changed). They went on to explain that she owned a nursery and was done for abusing the children. I never spoke to her again.

Mrsttcno1 · 03/10/2024 20:51

Yes and very similar situation to you OP. At my first job, had worked as part of a close knit team including a man for 2 years, would never have suspected anything untoward of him was lovely to everyone, had a wife and 2 young children, one day he didn’t turn up for work and police showed up at the office to search his desk & locker etc. He was found guilty of both making and possessing child pornography.

Wow that's crazy. What were they like? Did they have friends? What kind of stuff did they talk about? I just imagine them being absolute monsters, I can't picture them as human.

Frankensteinian · 03/10/2024 20:54

Did you think that programme about Maxine Carr was accurate @Rowgtfc72

almost exactly the same. Chap had joined the company in my team, after a couple of weeks he stopped coming in and we were found out he had been arrested for possessing child abuse images and wouldn’t be returning to work.

WandaFishy99 · 03/10/2024 20:57

I didn't really know him but we got a plumber round to fit a new stopcock and while he was there, arranged for him to come and service our boiler and central heating. He had a good reputation for being honest and seemed like a very pleasant man. Before the second appointment could happen he battered his wife to death and it came out that he treated her cruelly throughout their marriage. It gave me the creeps that he'd been in our house.
To make things worse, his house, a local authority house, was released for rent after the police had finished with it. I knew a lady whose daughter went to view it, not knowing the history of it. There was still blood all over the wallpaper.

MissyB1 · 03/10/2024 20:58

Dh was working with a Dr at our local hospital, we had him around to our house for a bbq, he was around our kids. Then the police come to the hospital with evidence of him grooming young girls (under 16) online. Sending them naked pics of himself etc..

He lost his job and was struck off.

MostlyCloudy1 · 03/10/2024 20:58

i used to get lifts home from my colleagues husband. He seemed fine, chatty, friendly. This went on for a while until she started having alternative arrangements home.

Turned out he was being outed as an absolute fucking monster, a serial child abuser and had abused and controlled his wife. I just thought she was shy, quiet and meek by nature.

Out of no where he was all over the news. He was jailed for life.
