On the 12th.

The 12th of Never.

Jumping bird, that's stunning.

They are. I especially like that she took her time to look for the leaves and picked the most beautiful ones. I mean, they might not be for everyone, but if you like it and feel happier about it then I can’t see why people should laugh at it. 🍁 I know my relative would have loved it.

The people sniffing at others decorating for autumn seem deeply joyless

@Shakenandstirredup

I don't see many "sniffing" at the concept of decorating for autumn, per se. But some of us are concerned about the environmentally unfriendly stuff that some stores are selling:

Dunhelm Autumnal Decor

https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/the-autumn-collection/c/5421

Wilko Autumn Collection

B&M Autumn decorations

Same goes for Halloween. If expressing concern for the environment is "deeply joyless" - then so be it.

Do you not go to shops and see all the autumn decor stuff?

Went to Sainsbury’s, Waitrose & Poundland yesterday but Poundland was just for cinema snacks. Didn’t see any autumn decor. Where should I see it?

No idea about Waitrose and Poundland but our Sainsbury's definitely sells it. John Lewis, Dunelm, Tesco, Next , Asda etc also do. Wreaths, cushions, flowers, vases, candles, bedding, ornaments, plates, soap dispensers etc....there's loads of it.

joolsella · 01/09/2024 18:31

Ive seen influencers sharing the shite they have bought on B&M

Pumpkin shaped tat

Cosycover · 01/09/2024 18:32

Today! As soon as its a 'ber' month all my lovely orange/autumn stuff comes out. Cushions, throws, garlands and candles.

I add pumpkins in October.

Then change to winter decor 1st december.

LipstickOnHisGuitar · 01/09/2024 18:32

@supportpangolin

It's funny though because when you AS the people who are moaning, they don't all seem particularly concerned with the environment in other ways. 🤔

DeCaray · 01/09/2024 18:33

It's all a bit 'Wicker man' with this harvest festival home decor.

joolsella perhaps you are looking at the wrong 'influencers'.

I don’t look at the Home stuff in my Sainsbury’s it’s in another section. Don’t shop in Asda, Next, Dunelm & the only Tescos near me are extra stores. I do shop in John Lewis but mainly online. I just went to JL and typed in autumn decor, & got 6 results & Im not convinced they all count 😆

Are you in America? Sorry if this has already been asked-long thread. 'Decorating for Autumn' has never been a 'thing' where I live (UK), except for Halloween.

Very nice list of where to find that stuff. Thank you. 😜😜

I can’t see any of that being different than what you find for Christmas though.
Similar quality. Some stuff being simply awful and cheaply made. And other stuff being quite nice?

gardenmusic · 01/09/2024 18:37

For those who do not have 'spare curtains' you can buy thermal linings that hang separately. They are quite reasonably priced. It's sense, not 'influencer'.
It's a bit of a faff, much easier if you have autumn/winter curtains with a built in lining, but it makes a tremendous difference to keeping the room warm.

I must admit I like the maple tree but the. It needs to be stored somewhere when not in use

I just don't understand what there is to celebrate about dark nights and cold, dark weather! Give me spring any time!

We don't do Christmas, so I cannot comment on the quality, aesthetics or environmental impact of commercially produced Christmas decorations.

LipstickOnHisGuitar · 01/09/2024 18:46

I don’t look at the Home stuff in my Sainsbury’s it’s in another section. Don’t shop in Asda, Next, Dunelm & the only Tescos near me are extra stores.

I don't go down the meat aisles in Tesco, it doesn't mean they don't sell it. It's all there, just like the autumn stuff is.

I do shop in John Lewis but mainly online. I just went to JL and typed in autumn decor, & got 6 results & Im not convinced they all count 😆

I was in JL yesterday, there was loads of it.

I do think a lot of people claiming they didn't know if was a thing are just being snarky. Unless they're huge environmentalists who are doing everything to minimise their impact on the environment, they just look stupid and pathetic for mocking others.

I don't actually decorate for autumn and my kids are older and don't care for Halloween, but I'm not perfect, I fly abroad, buy fast fashion sometimes etc so I'm not in a position to tell others they're wrong. If they want to decorate their house for autumn, 🤷🏻‍♀️

frozendaisy · 01/09/2024 18:46

This would terrify my household
How the F do you live not just perch in this?

What date do you decorate for autumn?
ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 01/09/2024 18:47

LipstickOnHisGuitar · 01/09/2024 18:19

I don't believe the posters who claim to not know some people do this. Do you not go to shops and see all the autumn decor stuff?

Haven't been to the shops for months apart from supermarket and I don't look in their home aisles.

JumpingBird · 01/09/2024 18:50

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/09/2024 18:41

Well where I live it can be dark 24hrs. So why not decorate with lots candles indoors and outdoors and make it cosy. It’s dark but all our neighbour’s houses look really nice with candles and autumn/winter plants or decorations. Chestnuts, autumn leaves, pine branches and beautiful pine cones.

frozendaisy · 01/09/2024 18:51

I am slowing planting garden for year round interest.

Does that count? Let plants, weather insects and birds decide when dressing for autumn arrives.

Shakenandstirredup · 01/09/2024 18:57

@LipstickOnHisGuitar but you asked Do you not go to shops and see all the autumn decor stuff?. I replied I hadn’t seen it, I’m not sure why that’s unbelievable? I don’t think it’s comparable to know a supermarket sells meat vs autumn decor stuff? 😆

I was in JL yesterday, there was loads of it

A retail store is going to mark the change in season with its displays, that’s normal. Same in January when all the pastel stuff comes in but as I said I’ve not yet been into a physical store and online as per my link doesn’t have a wide offer.

I do think a lot of people claiming they didn't know if was a thing are just being snarky. Unless they're huge environmentalists who are doing everything to minimise their impact on the environment, they just look stupid and pathetic for mocking others

Ive not mocked anyone from memory but I genuinely do not know anyone who does this in real life. Perhaps it’s a mindset though, if I went into John Lewis because I needed a new vase & happened to pick up an orange one I wouldn’t class it as changing my decor, I just needed a new vase.

LipstickOnHisGuitar · 01/09/2024 18:57

Haven't been to the shops for months apart from supermarket and I don't look in their home aisles.

That'll be why you don't see it then. 🤣 I'm sure you're not perfect, leave others to do what suits them.

frozendaisy · 01/09/2024 18:51

It counts. Some people here would hate to know that we even use ”bird food” to decorate. 😂

LipstickOnHisGuitar · 01/09/2024 19:01

@Shakenandstirredup

I didn't say you had mocked, I said some people had mocked. I think most people do go out to shops and see this stuff or see it online, receive emails advertising it, have seen threads on mumsnet EVERY YEAR about it, even if they don't buy it.
