And candles with maple leaves in the wax or gnomes in orange/brown with leaf motives don't really fit in other times of the year.

I think our home decor tastes are sufficiently wildly different to explain why I don't feel any need to decorate for autumn. Houseplants and sci-fi models and retro video games memorabilia look in-place all year around.

Houseplants die on us and I have lots of book related memorabilia in a different room. I think only the living room has a slight "decorated for autumn" vibe.

I also don't have real candles outside Christmas as DH has asthma, our electric ones are good enough for giving us a nice feeling without the smell, smoke and danger of burning the house down.

Thing is, I don’t care. I have no opinion on how other people decorate or how they spend their money.

I suppose that "puzzlement about behaviour that I don't understand" probably qualifies as an opinion.

Dandymax1 · 05/09/2024 17:35

I have put a few garlands around and redone my F&M basket to fit the season, candles & warm lights. I'll do whatever makes me happy in my own home. My DH rolls his eyes when I'm telling him what I'm going to do but after he he had an extremely awful day at work today (ambulance crew) he felt a bit better coming in to a cosy home with me being happy about it.

Dandymax1 · 05/09/2024 17:37

Here's what I've done.

706 replies on this thread, you're not the first person to have this and not the only person to have not read the thread either.

But don't let your ignorance stand on the way of an unoriginal and poor attempt at scathing response

Dandymax1, when am I taking delivery of that hamper! I actually bought a little picnic hamper....in a charity shop recently,it's sitting in my seaside theme beach hut (thankfully real rope fishing nets, wooden ornaments, real shells, whew,no plastic "tat". I'm afraid I keep my fairy lights (they ARE, natural wicker) up all year round the mirror in my north facing inner hall which has no natural light. I shall be drying the Acer leaves soon from my garden.... instead of putting them on the compost heap. I bought a china Spanish dish on eBay,will be putting them in there, with the fir cones and ooh battery candle. I wanted a log burner,we went for electric (and solar panels) see we aren't all naughty!

AmIEnough · 06/09/2024 10:23

I'll do my best, I was actually being genuine though. There was no sarcasm or scathing intention in my message. I guess the tone is often lost in the unspoken word

Because I am?!😂. But seriously, you do you. I think we have to be a bit careful because otherwise these things are yet another way in which we have to be perfect and generally people have enough to do without , as another poster says ‘buying loads more stuff from Temu’ . Or wherever. And then I thought a bit more and realised we have an autumn festival already, Harvest Festival. We do decorate- churches.

I really dislike the wastage of Halloween, all those pumpkins. Probably I am channeling The Grinch. But you don’t have to.

We donate all the pumpkins either to the local farmer or to the county composting program. Farmer feeds the chickens and geese with them.

In the nearest city they take pumpkin donations at the zoo. The elephants absolutely love them. It's a joy watching them dunk and smash them on the ground, then devour them.

increasinglyconcerned · 07/09/2024 13:48

I love autumn. My fave season. I have autumn mugs (x3) which come out, an autumnal wreath, I have a faux flower display in my hallway which I've been buying for/adding to over the years. I have summer and winter flowers but last year bought red berries and gold holly to add to for Christmas. Yesterday I bought faux Chinese lanterns and autumn leaves so I will have more of an autumn display too, just take them out and replace with a few Christmas stems come December. I also have a couple ornament pumpkins to go out. I love it! Will be doing mine around 15-20th September so I get a good 6 weeks use.

Don't worry, there will be plenty of anti-american threads you can join as Christmas approaches.

Mumof32017 · 08/09/2024 07:34

one of my neighbours puts different seasoned wreaths on her front door. That’s about as much seasonal decoration I’ve ever seen 😂

Nannyfannybanny · 08/09/2024 09:23

About 20 years ago I decided my weekly treat would be a bunch of flowers, nothing fancy for almost 40 years I have shopped in the German budget supermarkets. Then when I retired, I decided to grow my own. I have just picked the last sweet peas of the year, and now we're into ornamental grasses, dahlias and chrysanthemums.

Dandymax1 · 08/09/2024 18:52

Hi @justflewinfromthewindycity I keep my things for years & years. I recycle/upcycle wherever possible. I have conkers etc that are over 20yr old. Not sure what your issue with my comment is?

MaidOfAle · 04/09/2024 18:17

Do you not decorate in a cosy way to start with? I didn't paint my bedroom in an uncosy way, I painted it a kind of off-white with buttermilk carpetting to make it seem warmer.

I wonder if this desire to put autumn leaves in the house is a consequence of the recent trend for prison grey walls and laminate floors.

oh trust me, I am not a victim of the "greige" trend.
I like warm colours, have a burgundy leather chesterfield sofa and armchair and all that so called unfashionable brown wood furniture. but in autumn and winter, I like to make it extra cosy. more lights, more candles, more little hints of the nature that the weather isn't letting me spend as much time enjoying as in warmer, drier months
but there's definitely something about bringing out the cosy throws, the pumpkins, the candles, extra sparkly lights and so on

So that's what that neutral colour that looks dirty even after you've cleaned it is called!

Thank you!

Sharptonguedwoman · 04/09/2024 08:27

Crowley Kitten, obviously you can do whatever you like. I think I was down heartened at the thought of another thing I might have to do plus expense plus environment. I'm not a churchgoer now but it came to me that we have always celebrated autumn through harvest festivals, a fading tradition.
If people want to decorate with autumn leaves or whatever, fine. I can't see the point of pumpkins at all though and hate the waste.

but you don't HAVE to do anything. some people enjoy it. if you don't enjoy it, you're not obliged to do it.
in autumn and winter, when it's dark earlier, and you don't get to spend as much time in nature, it's just nice to bring a little nature indoors.

That’s all fine, no argument-from the woman who has just hung the winter curtains (draughty house).

I don't decorate for autumn but this thread did prompt me to go out and buy a new candle, although it's a verbena one, so not very autumnal :)

😆 That is funny but I’ll still decorate my little fireplace, it literally takes minutes.

user556453 · 06/10/2024 11:40

Wow.

I don't decorate for Autumn (or Fall). I agree social media creates unrealistic expectations and as a household we generally try to be fairly environmentally conscious, but I'd still much rather spend time with someone who goes joyfully overboard on full plastic tat than the sneering, superior, joyless twats on this thread. Especially the ones who think they're funny.

@justflewinfromthewindycity

I hope your house is decorated and you're happy with it and enjoying the change of season.

BunnyLake · 06/10/2024 13:45

Although I quite like the idea of decorating for the seasons (I’m certainly not against it) I can’t get on top of the house just being normal so seasonal decorating would stress me a bit I think. It’s something I might make a nod to in years to come when I’ve downsized to a small apartment.
