I have got some lovely autumn decorative bits but not sure what date I should start putting them out.
Is 1st September too early ?

That'll be why you don't see it then.

So you agree 👍

VeronicaCreepcheese · 01/09/2024 19:02

I think we should 'decorate' for all climatic and meteorological phenomena. I'm going to chuck water all over the floors when it's raining, just to get that 'outdoors indoors' feel. The trench foot will be worth it for the Insta likes.

Nottodaythankyou123 · 01/09/2024 19:03

I’m thinking when the weather changes, although as my cleaning products and candles/reed diffusers finish I’ll start replacing those with autumn scents.
I don’t go all out - pumpkin bedding (as I’ve said on a similar thread I only have three sets across the whole year - floral, pumpkin and Christmas, and I’ve had them for years so definitely getting good use out of them!), autumnal flowers, and a little pumpkin cushion and mug. I might also treat myself to a wreath - my neighbour has one and it’s delightful.

Luio · 01/09/2024 19:03

I thought I didn’t do this but then I realised I do it in a low key way. I always put a bowl of interesting looking squashes and pumpkins out in October, I buy bunches of winter foliage and berries in the winter and I get daffodils and primroses in the spring. I like the seasons and it makes me happy. I think you can do it whenever it feels right for you.

Autumnalapples · 01/09/2024 19:04

Today the new (old)throws are out. Definitely autumnal here. Cool and damp today.
Wreath on door and I’m not the only one looking around.
I love autumn and spring are my favourite seasons.
As I’m not inviting you into my home. No idea why anyone else cares. The slightly better tv starts. Strictly etc.

Shakenandstirredup · 01/09/2024 19:04

I’m a prolific shopper and have had plenty of emails from clothing shops but nothing else. I was just making the point that not all of us do see this stuff. I don’t remember a thread last yr but maybe wasn’t on here at the time. There are always threads about celebrating Halloween and taking Xmas decorations on the 26/12 though 😆😆😆

@Shakenandstirredup

I don't see many "sniffing" at the concept of decorating for autumn, per se. But some of us are concerned about the environmentally unfriendly stuff that some stores are selling:

https://www.dunelm.com/category/home-decor/all-home-decor?season=autumn

Dunhelm Autumnal Decor

https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/the-autumn-collection/c/5421

Wilko Autumn Collection

https://www.bmstores.co.uk/search?query=autumn

B&M Autumn decorations

Same goes for Halloween. If expressing concern for the environment is "deeply joyless" - then so be it.

@supportpangolin Those links aren’t to my taste regardless of season but obviously there is a market out there.

I'm not sure why you're so argumentative. If you have issues, please don't take them out on me.

This stuff is widely available in shops, you only have to look down the aisle to see it all, not go down it, it's also in window displays, it's even on the ends of aisles that you will have to walk past.

I still think there is mocking from people and I don't believe that people genuinely don't know this stuff is sold and that some people decorate for Autumn. There have been many, many threads on the subject for the years I've been on mumsnet. You'd have to live in a bubble to not realise it's a thing some people do. Of course people will deny they're aware so they can mock or pretend they're shocked. I'm not sure what they get out of that.

unsync · 01/09/2024 19:11

Downstairs loo being decorated tomorrow - does that count?

Sexyshrek · 01/09/2024 19:11

I have a different door wreath and front door mat that I change over in autumn and spring. Ones got flowers the other has leaves on it.

I think it is an American custom. I agree that buying lots of plastic tat for each season is excessive, but a few bits that you keep for years like Christmas or Halloween decorations is nice imo. The dc love seeing the 'changing of the door' 🤣

fedupoftheheatnow · 01/09/2024 19:12

I think it's a nice thing to do, and even if I didn't I don't see the need to mock something that's innocent that others find joy in. The world is a horrible enough place without adding to it, let people have their joy, no one's saying it should be compulsory.

Yes, I have read them all. Thank you.

Cornishqween · 01/09/2024 19:18

Already done mine last week - mainly because I adore autumn and want to enjoy the decorations for longer than the usual couple of weeks. Dh thinks I've lost the plot but my daughter gets as excited as me! We've even bought cosy autumn colouring books to do together while we light our pumpkin/toffee/caramel candles Grin

Shakenandstirredup · 01/09/2024 19:18

@LipstickOnHisGuitar are you confused? I’m replying to your posts as you are replying to mine? Should I be ignoring you?

Why are you being so argumentative? I’ve explained to you many times that I’ve not seen it but you want to keep arguing about it….

Over-consumption in developed countries is far from "innocent"

It's a major global problem (and a glaring example of inequality).

But I realise thar no wants to think that their (allegedly) harmless joyful habits are really highly detrimental

Shakenandstirredup · 01/09/2024 19:19

If you have issues, please don't take them out on me.

Equally, please don’t make me suffer anymore because of your lack of comprehension 😆

Autumnalapples · 01/09/2024 19:20

I do covet the le Creuset pumpkin casserole dish.
Emma Bridgewater always has lovely new mugs for autumn.
I also only buy pumpkins to eat not waste. I live NE and swede/turnip was more traditional. But pumpkins are easier to carve.🎃

reluctantbrit · 01/09/2024 19:21

I have a couple of candles, a door wreath and some dust catcher. I started in 2020 when we were slowly moving into the second Covid lockdown and needed something urgently to cheer me up. I have SAD, that together with more and more restrictions was just too much.

I love them, they go out around end of September and stay until I decorate for Christmas.

I also collect chestnuts and have some leaves and twigs around.

I am German and it's not that unknown there.

Why can't you understand that some people, including me, didn't realise that autumn decorating was a "thing"? Enough people on here have said they didn't know.
I know where the home aisles are in my local supermarket, I only go there every few weeks and my eyes don't even turn to look down those aisles. Why is that so unbelievable to you?
I've never seen an autumn decorating thread before on here. Of course I know that many people decorate for Halloween but this thread is specifically about autumn decorating, not Halloween.
Why would so many different people say they'd never heard of it if they all had? You need to open your mind to the fact that people can live differently to you.

nextdoornightmares · 01/09/2024 19:26

May, because that's when the bloody autumn weather started this year 🥶

In all seriousness, I tend to do 1st October to middle of November for autumnal type decorations (I'm not ashamed to admit I love a pumpkin and all the American style stuff) and then middle of November to end of December/start of January for Christmas.

Same here in Scandinavia. But it seems unheard of in the UK that you can decorate without plastic and landfill. 😅
