I have got some lovely autumn decorative bits but not sure what date I should start putting them out.
Is 1st September too early ?

No more - please - you obviously haven't enough to occupy yourself

Stirmish · 01/09/2024 13:23

Is this an American thing ?

Nope.
As far as I’m aware, people only decorate for Halloween and even that’s extreme.
Christmas is quite big, though, what with lights and lawn ornaments.
There’s a tv show (or used to be) for who could have the most outrageously decorated Christmas house. And they were outrageous, with blaring music, flashing lights and elaborate Santa’s sleighs and reindeers & snowmen.
I imagine their neighbors went insane.

Show us a pic of good autumn decoration

Catafult · 01/09/2024 18:03

The people sniffing at others decorating for autumn seem deeply joyless

Batshit but must be a great way to meet someone if you’re single tbf! I mean if they are there they already have something in common.

Anyone who would do that is single for good reason 😂

What does decorating for autumn entail? I've never heard of such a thing.
Is it a new thing that some Instagram "influencers" do?

Edited

Yes

Notreat · 01/09/2024 18:06

I have never decorated for Autumn. I'm not sure what that means

mitogoshi · 01/09/2024 18:06

@ISeriouslyDoubtIt

As your user name. I think it's a rarity! Who has spare curtains?

MtClair · 01/09/2024 18:07

@justflewinfromthewindycity to answer your original question, I’d say when it starts feeling like autumn to you.
Im in the NE too. Abd it definitively feels like autumn has arrived already. Unfortunately, because I can’t say I’ve seen the summer either.

Having said that, I was thinking of starting something similar.
im more or less housebound so I thought having different small decorations in the house will help separate the seasons and break the monotony.

I also think that, if it makes you happy, then why not??

There is someone for everyone. 😃

Who the fuck has convinced people they have to buy tat to decorate for each season?

Is it that Dunelm?
Do I has to have a word?

Oi... Dunelm... Nooooo...

🤪

Still summer till 22nd

Edited

I choked at this and heard it in Harry Enfield’s voice! 😂

newleafontheplantjohn · 01/09/2024 18:05

Yes

No. My parents did it 40 years ago. Nice plants by the door etc.

This has to be most environmentally unfriendly new "trend" I've read

I can see why it would appeal to people with more money than sense though.

Ready to bet that a lot of what is on SM is nudged along by companies who want to sell more stuff. Fool and money soon parted and all that

Do you say the same about Halloween decorations or Christmas decorations?
Stuff you buy for Easter?

It’s hugely environmentally unfriendly if you buy and throw away.
But im not sure there is any issue with buying stuff you’ll reuse year after year. Like any other pillows, throw etc… most people have several of those. Why not having some with a theme?
Same with candles etc etc

Kelly51 · 01/09/2024 18:12

OP I get what you're doing, here in MN it's all 'oh no think of the environment' 'i don't hoover never mind decorate' full of try hard virtual signalling. Enjoy your cosy house.
Also, for those saying they've never heard of changing curtains, it's a very normal thing to do, put thicker ones up for winter.

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/09/2024 18:13

Hmmm for me it will be remembering to take down the rabbit Easter candle off the shelf!!!

I will put an orange wreath on the door though.

Notaflippinclue · 01/09/2024 18:14

We had a very expensive bathroom suite in the 70s called 'autumn' corner bath, gold onyx taps, cantilevered loo and bidet - how cool were we! Those were the days!

Prettytiles · 01/09/2024 18:18

@ISeriouslyDoubtIt gosh - I’m like you. Who even does this?

LipstickOnHisGuitar · 01/09/2024 18:19

I don't believe the posters who claim to not know some people do this. Do you not go to shops and see all the autumn decor stuff?

LouH5 · 01/09/2024 18:19

justflewinfromthewindycity · 01/09/2024 17:41

@niadainud how long do you think it takes to put a throw on the sofa /light a candle and a few decorations on the fire place ?
It's not a long process believe it or not

I was thinking this too 🤣 we aren’t talking about painting the walls and re-carpeting in autumnal colours, just getting the spooky mugs and candles out, one of my least time consuming tasks, I have to say!

My dd made roses out of autumn leaves she picked, for a relative’s grave. Yellow, green, orange and red. Next to a candle they were beautiful.

Went to Sainsbury’s, Waitrose & Poundland yesterday but Poundland was just for cinema snacks. Didn’t see any autumn decor. Where should I see it?

That is because you have little imagination, but plenty of judgement.

gardenmusic · 01/09/2024 18:23

Jumping bird, that's stunning.

Shakenandstirredup · 01/09/2024 18:24

However, today’s prize for seasonal strangeness should surely go to John Lewis with Santa Paws, for £22 per dog, you can take them to meet Santa in a special dog grotto.

Probably profits are down due to low birth rates so they are capitalising on the huge growth in dog ownership.

lovescats3 · 01/09/2024 18:26

Jumping bird that's beautiful and a lovely idea
