Sleep well @Mumtobabyhavoc - sounds like a busy day was had!

@WinterFrog - back is still a bit sore. It’s more in my hip now really. Will make chiropractor appointment today now I have insurance approval.

I will have a look at that thread @SingleThreadJoiner - could always do with a hack or two!

As usual I didn’t get all of my list done yesterday so today I need to finish that list.

I did go out for a lovely lunch with DS though so that was nice.

Have a good day all.

SingleThreadJoiner · 26/09/2024 11:14

Oooh @Mumtobabyhavoc controversial statement about the pie crust! 😆I think shepherd's pie has to be potatoes on top, no exceptions (or maybe mixed in with a bit of sweet potato at most). Sorry to hear there is more medical upheaval to come with your mum.

I got my extra task done yesterday. And ran the cleaning program on the oven, and stuck the rack in the dishwasher (have to check what it looks like!). Today's extra job is sorting out an order of food for Sunday - the school has a lovely international bring and share lunch where we bring a dish from our country / culture and I am being super lazy and ordering it rather than making it!!

SpiritOfEdna · 26/09/2024 11:33

Mad couple of days here - sibling witnessed a dog attack while walking SpiritDoggo and I was harassed/swore at last night while waiting in my car! No idea why me, but the guy proceeded to film or photograph me coming out of my car and followed me down to the entrance of the class. I was convinced I’d come out of my class to a smashed up car, but it was OK. Decided to online report it this morning just for the record. Anyway. Today - busy work day and have more interviewing to get through.

  • buy new gym kit
  • buy new dog tag - DONE
  • walk SpiritDoggo when I can
  • Clear the soil from yesterday’s plant potting
  • put the ironing board away still 2 things to iron
Thats all for today, SoE Added: police called me back, nothing really to do (as expected) but it’s logged in case he does similar to anyone else.
Aria999 · 26/09/2024 13:50

Thanks for the housekeeping thread @SingleThreadJoiner . It has already cost me nearly $400 🤣 but will hopefully lead to a functional way of washing the floors...

Aria999 · 26/09/2024 14:14

Today:

Steam clean the couch
Finish laundry folding
Tidy up
Return to cellar clear out

Also this afternoon DS8 is going for his flu and covid vaccines, after which I am taking him to the toy shop (he hates vaccines very much so substantial bribery is needed!)

WinterFrog · 27/09/2024 06:40

@SpiritOfEdna what a day! Both of those things are shocking. I hope you are both ok. Was a human attacked, or a dog?

I hope DS coped ok @Aria999 Phobias can make life so difficult 😔

@singlethreadjoiner I love the sound of an international bring and share lunch!

@Peridot1 going out to lunch with DS is definitely a better use of your time than finishing chores 💕

@Mumtobabyhavoc best wishes to your mum, and as every, impressed what you achieves around children - and all that baking 😋

I am on the mend, just have a sore throat now. I need to do a reset today with floors and bathroom being priority. Just generally put straight I think. Things just feel a bit scattered around the place.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/09/2024 07:11

Single, just crust on the bottom and layer everything finishing with mashed potatoes on top and bake. Crust. 😋
Froggy, glad you're on the up. Take it easy, though. Booked my mum's surgery today. 👍
Aria, I think it's time I rented a proper shampooer and did the couches and area rugs. I'm spot cleaning daily and steam cleaning often, though. I also need to book vaccinations.
SoE, sounds quite unnerving re the harassment. Glad you reported.

Washed the new bath mat and hung to dry today. Made a pizza for dinner and fruit and whipped cream for dessert. Very rainy day, but managed Science World and farmer's market with Havoc. Will try for a bit more tomorrow. 🤞
Thanks again, everyone, for kind words re my mum.🩷
Just watching US news here re hurricane Helene that hit Florida a few hours ago with major flooding from storm surge.

@WinterFrog - it was an unmuzzled XL Bully on a small dog; not sure what the outcome was as sibling had ushered a very frightened SpiritDoggo away as SpiritDoggo was cowering behind them; she must have been frightened by the noise of it all. The police were involved.
Wrt harassment - the first things the police asked was did I do anything to provoke the guy, was it over parking! Was tempted to draw a diagram. It was an interesting conversation - people have been angrier since Covid...
Today is a busy work day so going to try and do some stuff around meetings

  • oven needs a good clean - I like taking it apart 😃
  • clean some gunk of the kitchen units
  • order a new coat rack - DONE
  • floors need brushing - full of dog dust and mud off shoes
  • walk SpiritDoggo
  • more filing
  • keep forgetting to book dentist check up - must do that today
That's all - a skimpy list bit all I've got time for, have a good day all, SoE
Aria999 · 27/09/2024 15:55

Yikes @SpiritOfEdna that all sounds alarming!

I shouldn't really call my upholstery cleaner a steam cleaner as it doesn't actually steam 😡 (did not realize when I bought it, I blame Amazon's dodgy search algorithms 🤦‍♀️)

DS vaccines went ok though he is staying off today as not feeling well

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/09/2024 17:57

Aria, is it a shampooer? I am thinking about buying a small one for furniture, mattresses and the area rugs.

Yes it's this. Soapy water goes in and gets sucked back out again. I have slightly mixed feelings about it though, it's definitely not as impressive as in the advertising picture!

I'll check it out. Thanks, Aria. Some are better than others. 🧐

Aria, looked at it. Wondering what the difference between that one and the "pet" version is. I have their steam mop and bought the regular on over the upgrade one.

Have just used the wand vacuum to clean up banana bread crumbs off couch (Havoc's, not mine!) then vacuumed all of couch, area rug and then front entrance area rug (Havoc helped!). Waiting for bath mat in dryer. It's taking a long time! Just using gentle setting, but I had it laid out on the drying rack overnight already. Have also returned a toy to Amazon. Not super impressed with pick-up. Driver was late then wanted me to bring item out to street rather than him come to door. Spent over 40mins trying to find contact for Amazon. Seems it's hidden. 🤬 Trip to buy Havoc a new toy from the store is next. The one I returned was cheaply made and wasn't working well after just a few days. 😡

@SpiritOfEdna - that sounds awful. Hope nothing more comes of it all.

@Mumtobabyhavoc - I’m really not sure about the crust with Shepherd’s pie! Although a friend of my mums used to make really nice pies filled with a minced beef filling and we would have them with mashed potatoes and gravy. So I suppose it’s all the same stuff on the plate really!

We are having Sheperd’s pie for dinner tonight. It suddenly feels quite a bit colder and autumnal. As opposed to just wet and autumnal!

We had friends over for dinner last night so this morning I’ve been clearing up. Am nipping out in a bit to look at carpets for the living room so the fitter can order them. The builder has booked him so it seems like our living room will be done next month.

Then other than finishing the clearing up and doing some laundry I’m planning a lazy afternoon.

Have a lovely Saturday all.

WinterFrog · 28/09/2024 13:09

@SpiritOfEdna that dog attack must have been horrific!
Rolling my eyes at the police officer - did you do anything to provoke it indeed!!

I'm back in harness today and have a very busy morning.

I have put the shower curtain in for a wash. I have paid the window cleaner. And I've booked some vet appointments. And now I intend to stick my nose into a novel for a couple of hours!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/09/2024 16:49

Peridot, not to add to the controversy, but, I don't love shepherd's pie as traditionally done, because it's missing the bottom crust. 🫢🫣
Winter, it feels good to get things done out of the gate, doesn't it? I threw laundry in around 7:45 and am about to hang it up and wash another load. I then got a bit of breakfast for Havoc, fed baby and made a pot of oatmeal. 😁
Enjoy your book time. ☺️

Just to add to the shepherd's pie discussion, I like This One

Autumn has put me in a doing mood! I'm feeling all enthusiastic and ready to go with batch cooking, getting garden ready for winter, getting house ship-shape once and for all and knowing there's a place for everything, and everything in it's place.

I also need to help my mum, but she has at least reinstated her carers. Not quite as invincible as she thought she was, bless her!

I would say I'm going to need to pace myself, but here I am procrastination once again.

I also have a bit of a good book. Yellowface by Rebecca K Kuang. I was sleepless at 4am today so read till 6. Also wordle, connections and tiles. Am surprisingly brilliant at that time of the morning!

Hope you all are having a lovely weekend 💕

Gordon Ramsay: Shepherd's Pie

I remember back when I was in high school going to a restaurant near me called Tippin's.  Yes, it was mostly a pie restaurant, but what I...

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/09/2024 03:30

Thanks for the recipe, Winter. I've never followed one, but looks interesting. I had to look up the optional pickle. Was not prepared for that! Very interesting!!! Do you use it???

OP posts:
WinterFrog · 30/09/2024 06:27

I did use it @Mumtobabyhavoc! It's very popular in our house 😊 I haven't made it for ages ( I mean possibly for 2-3 years) so I am grateful for the reminder. I have the Graham Ramsay book, and it's very lovely, but haven't made more than a handful of meals from it - isn't that the way with many cookery books?

My mum used to make proper shepherd's pie with leftover roast lamb ( she had one of those big meat mincers) She was a great cook but as a child I remember finding that dish a bit grey and bland, so I thought I didn't like shepherd's pie till I tried the Ramsay one.

Monday again and a million things I want to do, so I'm up and off to shower. Have a great day everybody 💕 🐸

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/09/2024 06:55

Winter, I remember my mum using a meat grinder, too! It screwed into the counter-top, I think. Interestingly, or blasphemously, "shepherd's pie" here will likely be "cottage pie." Lamb is not nearly as common as beef. And you'd easily find people who've never eaten it. So, anytime I've had "Shepherd's" pie it was ground beef cooked in a pan, typically a slurry added to make gravy, poured into a baking dish and topped with mashed potatoes and baked. Sometimes a layer of corn or peas inside, sometimes sautéed mushrooms. Not very inspired, but easy and comforting, I guess. My favourite would be chicken pot pie (just chicken stew in a top and bottom pie shell, or proper Irish stew with lamb and lots of crusty bread for dipping into the gravy. 😛

OP posts:
WinterFrog · 30/09/2024 12:55

My mum had one of those too @Mumtobabyhavoc I'm sure cottage pie is just as lovely. Agree that shepherd's pie can seem a bit uninspired but the Gordon (not Graham 🤦‍♀️)Ramsay one is very lovely.

I've had quite the productive morning and am feeling quite pleased with my brilliance today 😁

Peridot1 · 30/09/2024 14:59

We had Gordon Ramsey’s Shepherds pie on Saturday. No Branston in the recipe DH used though. I think I’ll try your one next time @WinterFrog.

@Mumtobabyhavoc - I was brought up with “Shepherd’s” Pie made with beef too. My mum used a packet mix.

@WinterFrog - I’m feeling a bit of a doing mood too. Which is just as well as I have just sacked the cleaners! Long story! So while we sort a replacement of some description it’s all on me. And as I am Miss Procrastination I need a plan……..

Today so far has been -

  • stripping my bed at 6.30am - another early waker
  • dishwasher
  • washed bedding
  • washed towels
  • went to M&S and Next
  • emailed builder about our living room project which changed quite a bit over the weekend and is starting next Monday

Still to do-

  • remake my bed
  • another load of laundry
  • Vacuum

I have also gradually being switching summer and winter clothes over.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/09/2024 23:57

I've got laundry done and made a late lunch/early dinner of crab and pesto pizza with arugula, feta and mixed cheeses; and a hubbard squash and coconut milk soup.
It feels like fall!

Hello all, just flitting by, have been solo parenting for almost a week now and flagging a bit, and final blow was dealt this morning when we discovered that H's flight back (from the US) was being rescheduled to much later in the day so instead of being back this afternoon, he won't be back until tomorrow morning 😓So just focusing on keep afloat here (and not drowning in the rain!!!), though I did at least manage to pay the after-school club in time before the start of the new month! Oh and today I booked my flu shot....first available slot in early November!
