That is excellent news SoE, I'm not doing dry January on account of it being my birthday month so I'll raise a G&T in good health to you.
Today is office day so I've been out and been social. We've had a takeaway for dinner, walked ddog and the washing machine is ready to go.
Library books out to go back tomorrow plus activity passports. Now I need to iron some hama beads for dc2. Will do that before the gin.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 17/01/2025 20:32

Brilliant news @SpiritOfEdna . i agree- drink the champagne!

Happy Birthday month @RunningKatie !

Waves to everyone.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 18/01/2025 02:26

Sort, did you find your 🧐
SoE, excellent news (you, too Winter). 🤗
Katie, Happy January birthday. I'm Feb. ☺️
Petal, you've prompted me to drop off recycling, too. Thanks.
Peridot, exhausting list!!!!

Made a nice and easy pasta for dinner with lots of veg then hot chocolate with marshmallows and homemade cookies for dessert. Going to take dc out for a good walk as I napped today and we didn't get out.

I smiled at the comment that my before/after pics of steam cleaning are a good ad. Bissel has discontinued the steam cleaner model I bought. 😤
Means I can't easily find cheap replacement pads and attachments.

Peridot1 · 18/01/2025 09:38

Morning all.

Hope you drank the champagne @SpiritOfEdna!

I agree about the photos @Mumtobabyhavoc. We have a steam cleaner that I never remember to use. You have inspired me to get it out later.

I didn’t achieve much yesterday - PT session, quick supermarket trip and then thought I’d book an eye test and they had one 20mins later so I dashed off for that early afternoon. Need new glasses so ordered those. I did some laundry at some stage.

Today:

  • laundry
  • dishwasher/kitchen
  • last of Christmas boxes which will involve testing old lights
  • tidying/dusting and re-jigging dining room shelves
Have a great day all.
Aria999 · 18/01/2025 12:20

That's a relief @SpiritOfEdna !

I think dry January is a good idea in principle but I wish it wasn't in January, which is such a depressing, dark, post holidays month to begin with. That's my excuse anyway

SingleThreadJoiner · 18/01/2025 17:15

Joining the (virtual) celebrations for @SpiritOfEdna 's good news! In fact I had some prosecco last night so not so much virtually really 🍾

Fairly relaxed weekend here with playdates and pottering about. Sold an armchair on Facebook marketplace - I'm always a bit wary of it but buyers were super polite, collected on time, and didn't even haggle on the price - amazing!

No extra jobs from me, but H did a big clear out of the pantry and chucked a lot of extremely out of date food so it all looks much better now.

petalpower · 18/01/2025 18:33

What a relief that must be to get that good news @SpiritOfEdna .
Today’s extra job was to clean the oven, something I’ve been putting off for an embarrassingly long time. It still needs some heavy duty chemicals to finish off the bottom of the oven but it’s the best I could get it and the shelves are gleaming which they certainly weren’t before.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 18/01/2025 19:53

Saw a comet while out last night for a walk. It was pretty exciting! Sky was gorgeous with stars. ☄️✨

Cleaned the railings on the deck and the sliding door tracks. That's my extra, done first, as I'm still in pj's and haven't done the basics...yet. 😁
I have had pb&j on sourdough and 2 cups of strong tea, though! ☺️

OP posts:
RunningKatie · 19/01/2025 18:00

A comet sounds amazing @Mumtobabyhavoc - our most exciting thing to spot on recent dog walks has been a strange light on the top of a hill.
The local FB page has solved the mystery, apparently it's an art installation, a bit like a HOLLYWOOD sign - only we're clearly very far from there!
Weekend has been good, I've sorted lovely birthday plans with different groups of people. It'll almost make up for the hitting another decade.
Washing machine loaded ready to go, started sorting paperwork (again!), and all prepped for work & school.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/01/2025 23:28

Katie, it appears I've gotten my terms wrong and it was likely a meteor. I've been reading up on it the past two days, although a few notable comets were in our sky it's unlikely I saw them. It was a very bright orange streak, rather close and clear, so a meteor, I guess. It was amazing, though!

OP posts:
FourSeasonsLobelia · 20/01/2025 02:47

I have been lucky to see a meteor just once. 30 years ago now and I have never forgotten it!

Happy Birthday @RunningKatie !

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/01/2025 05:50

It's thrilling, isn't it, Lobelia? ☺️

OP posts:
Peridot1 · 20/01/2025 11:28

That sounds pretty amazing whatever it was @Mumtobabyhavoc.

Happy birthday month @RunningKatie. When is it?

Yesterday I did a few small bits - put away the games we had out over Christmas and NY. Which has made me realise I need to clear out the games cupboard as there is lots there we never use. And I have four jigsaws I’ve never made. A couple of odd ones DH got me that I’ll probably never make realistically. I also started to put out some things to pack for my Australia trip next month. Also packed up some returns that need to go back.

Today is kitchen day. I’ve cleaned the sinks and the counter tops along the sides. And the window sills. Just having a coffee before I do the island unit counter tops. Then I’m going to sort and clean the bookshelves. I start to sneeze if I sit at the island unit so I think there is a lot of dusting to be done!

I also did a little extra after my shower earlier and did the shower plug.

Aria999 · 20/01/2025 12:49

Happy birthday @RunningKatie !

SpiritOfEdna · 20/01/2025 14:42

Thank you everyone and Happy Birthday @RunningKatie . Very envious of the comet @Mumtobabyhavoc I thought I'd missed the planet alignment but it's not due till tomorrow but the last few nights here have been very cloudy - last week was amazing clear though...
Today

  • all doors have been collected today and all the associated joiner's rubbish (yuck - cigarette butts....)
  • we've got a box on the go for all old cables, phone, some for who knows what, ready for tip
  • need to buy a new shredder - am going into the filing cabinet and want to reduce it down by half - wish me luck 😄
  • on countdown to payday - 4 to go including today
  • meal planning needs to be done
  • start a Costco list for the weekend
That's all for today, SoE
Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/01/2025 19:35

Just trying to get out the door here for errands I should have started over 2 hours ago. 😵‍💫

Costco, drop off some recycling and two tasks for my mum.

OP posts:
Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/01/2025 23:06

Feeling productive here!
Got all but one errand complete y/day - but not for trying went to two medical labs to drop of a sample and both were closed despite hours stated differently online. So, going to dash out shortly to complete that one.

Vacuumed and washed floors last night, cleaned bathroom sink/toilet and floor; washed lower third portion of walls and washed baseboards.

Today: took a stack of old plates to toss as not in good enough condition to donate and sorted three drawers refolding clothes and tossing those in poor condition as no textile recycling I'm aware of. Then did paper admin checking and filing various papers/tax docs/bank stuff and throwing away some receipts and warranties for items well past warranty. Am happy to report my two heated throws have lasted 7 years and going strong with nightly use fall to spring.

Going to head out to lab while I'm on a roll and laundry washing.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 22/01/2025 01:18

Hi all.

I am scheduled to be home at the weekend and took the chance today while a parent was at a medical appointment to have a quiet glass of wine and start writing up the projects I will tackle when home. Certainly a sign my attention is gradually redirecting to home.

I plan to -

  1. get out the concrete cutter to cut out an actual garden bed for my fernery rather than just having them in pots. Plus locate some stag ferns to cover up a particularly ugly wall
  2. tip run every Thursday which is my 'free day' (which really means free form housework as our wonderful cleaner comes. I discovered our tip has just started taking old paint which is wonderful news
  3. Underplant the climbing roses in one garden bed with white and lavender-coloured lavender
  4. Finish off the spare room I am turning into a walk in dressing room. I need to give some serious storage solutions some thought.

Things have turned out well here so I can go home with some confidence but with some funds up my sleeve for a further dash trip as required. It will be good to see my boys and my cats. ❤

Best wishes to you all.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/01/2025 03:33

Lobelia, I hope that means things are going to be ok.

I spent about an hour puttering with some stick-on battery powered LED puck lights. I could't commit to sticking them up permanently, though. I'm thinking bedroom closets then a few spots for emergency lighting. My plan is to put painter's tape on the wall then stick the light to the tape so as not to damage the wall if I need/decide to remove them. When I'm out walking at night I see a lot of obvious DIY coloured interior lights, usually strip lighting, in people's homes, so I thought I'd experiment a bit. Hmmmm... maybe I'll check out those Command stickies. 💡

Morning all! I've been reading but not posting sorry, we've all been down with the heavy cold/fever that's doing the rounds.
Just checking in but not got brainpower to write anything very lucid ( nightnurse hangover!) Wonderful stuff and only for emergencies but i was on the third night of not sleeping.
Best wishes to all, safe trip home @FourSeasonsLobelia

Peridot1 · 22/01/2025 07:50

Glad things are ok @FourSeasonsLobelia and I like your list.

Get better soon @WinterFrog.

On Tuesday I finished the island unit and did a good clean and a sort out of cookery books. Have a bag to go to charity. Could get a few others from an other bookshelf too. I have a bit of a cookery books obsession!

I need to finish wiping down the other kitchen units and clean the lights over the island. Will do that today.

I didn’t get much done yesterday as was back at dentist to get stitches out and did a bit of shopping. Was supposed to pick up a parcel from Waitrose but forgot. So ended up going back in the afternoon. 40 minute round trip. Annoying.

Today we have a new cleaner starting and I have a PT session and will need to leave shortly after she gets here so I need to get organised soon.

Have a good day all.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/01/2025 09:36

Oh, no 🐸. Sorry to hear it. I hope you'll get some much needed rest. 💐

OP posts:
petalpower · 22/01/2025 09:36

Hope you're able to get back home
as planned @FourSeasonsLobelia . Get well soon @WinterFrog.
My extra job today is to go for my cervical
screening/ smear test. I absolutely hate them and dread going but am meeting a friend for lunch after which is my well done treat for being brave! I heard on the news the other day that only a third of women attend their test which is quite shocking. I’m glad I only have them done every five years now - benefit of being a bit older!

SpiritOfEdna · 22/01/2025 11:39

@WinterFrog - I love a nightnurse hallucination 😃Everything I want to do today has pre-tasks...
Today

  • need to see if a couple of laptops boot up - if they do need to get all the information of them and then recycle them. First - find chargers
  • two days to payday - I have a lot of stuff in a lot of baskets 😄
  • Finance admin ready for payday
  • stuck in the house waiting impatiently for my walking boots to be returned - they were being re-soled. Due for delivery by 1pm.
  • I got a painting by numbers picture of the dog for last year's birthday - it's huge! so I need something to pin it on so first thing - measure canvas
  • Need the shops for food - but need to wait in for boots 😄
  • we've shed loads of poo bags out of pockets - I keep seeing them drifting everywhere like little black ghosts - need to gather them all up
  • floors are filthy - mud AND sand
  • walk doggo
  • prep for essential spend only February
That's all for today, I'll go and grab an additional task from the jar, have a good one, SoE
SingleThreadJoiner · 22/01/2025 16:55

Happy birthday @RunningKatie ! And very glad to hear you can come back with a lighter heart, @FourSeasonsLobelia (is that the right expression? not a heavy heart, in any case!). And I love the idea of a bespoke paint-by-numbers picture, @SpiritOfEdna , what a great present!

I started the day with the 'extra' job, during breakfast I put on a wash of dishcloths and teatowels and rags. Result!

Over the course of the week as we've been putting the house back together post carpets and furniture moves I've taken the opportunity to cull a few books, toys, and bits and pieces - very satisfying.

The biggest new set of jobs has landed on our plate today as the purchase of the local flat for my parents has been completed, and there's been the accompanying flurry of utility readings and switchovers, getting of keys, calling of the council, etc. etc. We are of course delighted and feel very privileged, but also the start of a new and long to-do list!
