Careful on the ice @WinterFrog ! Maybe you need to invest in some new snow boots with good grips! I have some lovely furry ones from the North Face and they're definitely footwear of choice currently!

It's -13 here and still snowing. I am amazed they haven't closed DS school. Traffic yesterday was insane at pickup.

Succeeded in vacuuming DS room yesterday. Tried to make smug soup but my client called and I left the initial stage on the heat and forgot about it so it burned. Will try and turn the non burned part into soup today if I remember!

petalpower · 15/01/2025 12:50

I’ve been trying to go back to the original (I think) theme of this thread which was to do one extra job a day. In the past couple of days I’ve:

  • descaled the kettle and run a cleaner through the dishwasher (the shock of this caused the kettle to die so had to buy a new one)
  • uploaded and printed a year’s worth of photos from my phone. Now in an album. I’m normally quite good at this but last year was not the best and I got out of the habit.
  • descaled all the bathroom and kitchen taps
  • cleaned the heated towel rail, wiped out the inside of the toothmug where the toothbrushes live and cleaned my make up bag
All little jobs that just needed doing. This afternoon I need to throw out the geraniums which I’ve been hanging onto since the summer and also some terracotta pots that have cracked and flaked in the frost.
Peridot1 · 15/01/2025 13:08

@sortmyselfoutagain - I wish I had a cleaning rota! But I definitely need one which is why I mentioned it. I used to have cleaners but cancelled them a few months ago and am doing it myself now. Currently I’m in a rough routine of:

  • cleaning kitchen on Monday
  • laundry most days - wash, hang, take down previous day, fold and put in basket at bottom of stairs in evening usually while DH cooks and I take it upstairs and put it away next morning
  • clean downstairs loo Sunday and Wednesdays which takes five minutes

That is about it for routine. So I need more. As we definitely have more rooms!

@petalpower - I’m trying to do the original job a day too. Today is supposed to be new filter in the kettle.

sortmyselfoutagain · 15/01/2025 14:17

I’ve got into the habit of doing a laundry load every day. It’s just DH and I so there isn’t usually much but I feel the benefit of the routine and it doesn’t pile up so I’m trying to keep going with that. I do the wash one day and hang on the clothes horse then the following day I stick it in the drier for 10 minutes to finish the load off and I’m ready for the next one. It’s never ending but feels more manageable this way. I also empty the bins everyday. We have four bins (general, food, paper & plastic) so there’s never much to go out but it feels good having that as something I do everyday. Now if I could just add a couple more things I do everyday then I’d be winning!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/01/2025 17:34

Good morning, everyone. It's a sunny and chilly 2c here in Vancouver. Aria, I forget where you are that it's -13.
I was awake late last night due to baby sleeping 6:30pm-8:30pm and being wide awake until after midnight. So, baby followed me around while I used the wand vacuum on the area rugs and kitchen. I felt productive after that so cleaned the bathroom sink, mirror and floor. Then, as my extra, wiped the fronts of the kitchen cupboards, oven door and fan hood.
Also made a lovely chicken soup with lots of fresh ginger and cilantro last night for a late dinner. Have got a load of white towels/washcloths in the wash on a hot wash with bleach and hoping it will revive them since it's been a while since I've bleached them. It's likely time for new towels, though.

Hi all- reading though not posting. Still away and ill relatives are on the mend although a few new things have cropped up unexpectedly. I ought to be back in about 10 days. I already have a list of jobs in my mind!

Best wishes to everyone. Thanks

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/01/2025 20:23

@FourSeasonsLobelia Have been wondering how you and parents are managing. Nice to see you pop by. 💕

OP posts:
FourSeasonsLobelia · 15/01/2025 20:34

Thanks- managing quite well but medical appointments every day - and sometimes twice a day! All the tests meant something (hopefully a benign growth) that would have gone unnoticed have been flagged so an unexpected operation is happening as well.

I am making a classic fish pie for dinner though with extras for the freezer today. Already have some bolognese and chicken soup put away. Just hope to ease the load a bit when I am gone.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/01/2025 20:39

Have now got dishcloth soaking in vinegar, a bit of dish soap and boiling water. My kitchen floor is screaming to be scrubbed. I wipe it several times a day (little ones make a lot of mess!)and vacuum at least every second day, but actual hands and knees scrubbing and/or steam mopping is done less often.

RunningKatie · 15/01/2025 21:38

-13 @Aria999, wowsers? I feel guilty moaning now that we're at -1 again.
Hope the family are coping ok at home without you too @FourSeasonsLobelia
Impressive work as ever @Mumtobabyhavoc 🙂
Today's been a wfh day, I've registered an electric device, only a day after I got the broken one replaced. Wuhoo!
I've deleted some emails and generally tried to find things to put away properly.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/01/2025 03:13

It's been a lazy day aside from laundry. I did make another pot of chicken soup, though. Again, lots of fresh ginger and I tossed in a handful of baby carrots and a bunch of cilantro. I had a headache and felt out of sorts most of the day, so poor dc are rather squirrelly having been in all day. We had a late lunch as well. So, now I've bundled them up and I'm taking them out for a good walk this chilly evening so we'll all, hopefully, sleep well.

@sortmyselfoutagain - I think a rough routine definitely helps keep on top of the day to day stuff. It also helps my brain! I tend to not be able to decide what to do if there is a lot and can flit from one thing to another so having a regular day for things will help. I hope!

@FourSeasonsLobelia - good to hear from you. Was wondering how you were getting on.

Waves at everyone else!

Yesterday’s extra jobs - changed filter in kettle, put dish drainer and extractor fan filter and dish caddy through dishwasher. Did a list of things I want to do today.

Today’s extra jobs - strip both beds in spare bedroom and wash a set. Tackle the list I did yesterday. Which is quite a few admin jobs. And a bathroom clean.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/01/2025 09:14

Peridot: your extras have prompted me to do same. Thanks for posting that. I have been meaning to pop the fan filter and cutlery caddy into the dishwasher along with the stove element drip catcher plates
(whatever they're called!). Will do tomorrow (well, it's after 1am, so later today).
Used wand vacuum on area rugs and kitchen again this evening; also vacuumed one couch; washed and hung up a load of clothes; and bathed one dc. (That last one counts, right) 😁
Also had a good evening walk with dc. It was chilly, but we were bundled up and it was a lovely night with a gorgeous moon out.

Hope you are feeling ok @Mumtobabyhavoc , being ill is dreadful when you have little kids to look after! We are in Pittsburgh.

Only -8 today (still snowing) but school has finally decided to close, and DD preschool is not opening till 10am, so I have had to cancel meeting my friend for breakfast (which is a pain as we have been trying to arrange it for ages).

I don't see any projects happening today, trying to get some work done around the lack of childcare is probably going to be the best I can do.

SingleThreadJoiner · 16/01/2025 12:35

Hello everyone, I have been reading every day but never get round to posting! I find it really fiddly on my phone for some reason. I hope you are staying upright on the ice, and sorry to hear @Aria999 of the winter weather messing up your plans - friend dates are so precious!

A busy house-stuff week here with two showers and a bath having been resealed and an oven and a heated towel rail fixed. Very relieved.

Extra jobs achieved so far this week: physio booked, D's bed sold, D's bedguard donated (felt oddly emotional about that one!), culled a few books.

H and I have been experimenting with different furniture arrangements in the sitting room post carpet work and it is very satisfying - we are leaving things in their new place for a few days to see what we think of it all.

Back to back meetings today - barely time to have lunch! - but easing off tomorow.

RunningKatie · 16/01/2025 20:30

This evening I've fallen asleep after dinner, the last few days have been full on at work and it's caught up with me. Going to get everything laid out for an office day and then toddle off to bed with a mug of tea and a book.
House-wise, I've made a new list! Ordered an inhaler for dc, sorted the washing, and put away a few more bits. I was on a call earlier where I couldn't blur the background so I need to straighten the office/dumping ground as all I could see was chaos behind me.
Hope everyone is ok and looking forward to an upcoming weekend.

WinterFrog · 17/01/2025 06:36

Hello everyone! @Aria999 your temperatures sound exceedingly cold! Do you get long spells like this? I had some moon boots years ago that I used in the snow after a skiing trip. Beautifully warm and non slippy. Winter is mostly mud here, and this is why we don't cope well when it's suddenly icy I think. My slips were in a stable yard which we should have gritted, in hindsight. I will look more closely at my wellies as the heels are probably a bit worn.

You've all been busy. Good to see you going back to the one project @petalpower Sorry your kettle didn't survive the descaling, but I see you've inspired the rest of the gang! 😁 I should look at mine too.

I'm another who thrives on routine, I have discovered as I get older. I used to feel that spontaneity was more fun but then I looked at habit stacking and daily rhythms, and now I get more done and I'm more peaceful with it. I used to get overwhelmed with piles of laundry @sortmyselfoutagain ( love the name!) till i discovered flylady ( I know she's a bit marmite but I take what I can use) and started doing a daily load too. First thing in the morning, in, on, done! My habit is now simply to check the laundry basket, but we do at least 5 loads a week.

I need to clean out my car. It's become a bit of a dumping ground so I'm going to start bringing something in with me each time I've used it, so I can vaccum it. Coats, hats, my mother's knitting bag, birdseed, an empty box, spare boots, crumpled dust sheet from last trip to tip. Food wrapping 😳 And quite a lot of mud. General grot, in short. And then, per my beloved flylady - bring things in after every trip and keep it fit for passengers! I also want to sort out a box of emergency gear ( first aid, blanket, water etc) and a place for the spare boots that's not the back seat!

Best i get on with it. Have a great day, all 💐

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/01/2025 07:00

I did a bit of puttering after dc fell asleep. I steam cleaned the kitchen and bathroom floors then the hall and entrance. I then steam cleaned the dishwasher door. The top of the door always gets dingy despite wiping dry and cleaning with a soapy scrubby cloth. This time I rubbed some dish soap on it then steamed using the scrub brush attachment (pics). I tried same in washing machine gasket, but had much less success. I need to get it serviced and replaced unless I can google and diy.

The wardrobes and drawers have been successfully built. It was a much longer, boring task than I thought but they are done. I still have 5 boxes to sort out and organise so today’s one extra job will be to sort just one.

I seem to have misplaced a bag of medication which I know is in the house somewhere but I don’t know where (bit of a recurring theme going on here). After I take this morning I will have run out. They are to prevent migraines and GP won’t prescribe more until I am actually due them so if I don’t find them today it’s going to be a tortuous couple of weeks. So that is today's extra extra job.

I’ve spent the morning so far pottering around the house doing bits and bobs - booked airport parking for our trip in March, bought a birthday card and sorted out my bank accounts as it’s payday today so I'm pleased to have ticked some things off the list. Off to find the medication now....

Peridot1 · 17/01/2025 09:45

I got lots done here yesterday.

Stripped two beds from spare room and washed it all. Dried one lot in dryer and hung the single bedding.
Booked taxi to airport for my Australia trip next month.
Sorted Australia visa.
Sorted NZ visa
Delegated medical and dental claim to DH
Started putting things to pack onto spare bed
Sorted payment for house we have booked in NZ and sent my bank details to friends
Ordered Vit D tabs - had a blood test on Wednesday and results were back yesterday and I’m ok according to NHS. But only just.

Today:

  • PT session
  • laundry
  • put yesterday’s laundry away
  • dishwasher/kitchen
  • sort last remaining Christmas boxes
  • clear dining table
  • clean downstairs cloakroom

Have a good day all.

petalpower · 17/01/2025 12:26

My one extra job today was to drop off the small electrical recycling when I came into town to get my haircut - the dead kettle, some broken Christmas lights and my daughter’s old hairdryer. I’ve also dropped off a bag of donations at the charity shop.

WinterFrog · 17/01/2025 13:36

I had a fit of enthusiasm and cleaned out the whole car. It took all of ten minutes! I'm sitting at the carwash now, and once the wash is done, I'll pay the £1 for 4 minutes vacuuming time.
That's a very good advert for the steam cleaner @Mumtobabyhavoc Much better.
Seems like a lot of things have been achieved this morning by everyone!
Aand....it's almost the weekend. Again 😂

SpiritOfEdna · 17/01/2025 15:37

hurrah for Friday. I've gone all seize the day. I had a mammogram late last year and got an unexpected call back to attend a clinic 'for further investigation', which led to a fairly unsettled xmas/new year break. So, appointment done with an outpatient appointment for this coming Monday to get results, I got a call yesterday saying basically don't bother coming on Monday, we've looked at the results and it is benign. Phew. I do have a bottle of champagne to celebrate, but am doing dry January 😄Although, my version of seize the day is chucking stuff out, there are binbags of kitchen stuff ready to go to the tip Sunday and I've organised my wardrobe into things I can fit into now down to what were you thinking?!!! I am getting ready to walk the dog (it's getting lighter hurrah) and there are planets to see tonight
have a good one, SoEx

Peridot1 · 17/01/2025 16:24

Great news @SpiritOfEdna! Drink the champagne!

WinterFrog · 17/01/2025 16:27

I'm so thrilled for you @SpiritOfEdna 🎉 I have been there too. I got the call the day before i was due to go back after biopsy etc. The unsettled feeling is indescribable isn't it? I didn't realise how stressed I was till I suddenly wasn't! Big hugs for you and 🍷
