Uhm, where has the week gone???? How is it Friday night!! Very perplexing.

@SpiritOfEdna I must ask you about this Sherlock Holmes event, was it going to be a re-enactment? A performance? Very intrigued!

@Peridot1 you have had such a rotten time with the tooth, I am glad the antibiotics are doing their thing.

I'm trying to figure out what I did this week. Work. Laundry. Some basic but healthy evening meals (pan fried cod, chicken drumsticks, some veg). H and I sorted out quotes from the plumber for the shower dripping issue, and some safety checks for the place my parents are hoping to buy. Gave away two bags of clothes donations - that felt good.

Lost my Wordle streak - not so good.

Oh and went to see Wicked at the cinema! Enjoyed it immensely, though it is looooong.

Christmas tree coming on Sunday, though I think we won't decorate it quite yet - but I suppose we ought to get the decorations down from the loft....

SpiritOfEdna · 07/12/2024 07:03

@SingleThreadJoiner here’s the Description for Sherlock Holmes’ Christmas Casebook. ‘Step into the snow-dusted surroundings of Baker Street and join award-winning actor Jonathan Goodwin, who masterfully steps into the shoes of the world’s greatest detective. The performance promises to be a uniquely thrilling exploration of deduction and Victorian charm. Gather your fellow sleuths, book your seats now, and don’t miss this blend of holiday cheer and intriguing detective work—where you unravel the mysteries alongside Holmes himself!’ Disappointed it was cancelled - I don’t know how I missed we are in the midst of a storm!!

Busy day today:

  • refpilates this morning
  • SpiritDoggo needs walking but the weather is pretty foul and windy out there
  • go and buy a 🌲
  • we have a visitor tomorrow - the lesser spotted GNeice - it’s been a while so need a little tidy
  • gift shopping needs to be done today
  • Need to take down all the prints on the walls so they don’t get damaged by doors being taken in and out of the house next week.
  • make some mince pies!
That’s all for today, SoE
Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/12/2024 07:09

I'm very intrigued by the ordering of Christmas trees... please explain! 🤔

OP posts:
WinterFrog · 07/12/2024 07:30

Morning! And what a wild one it is too! We're on yellow warning here. I have to go out but I wish I could stay put!
My ordered gifts are starting to arrive so will do some wrapping today.
I think I shall tackle my underwear/sock drawer today. I keep finding mismatched socks.
Stay safe everyone 🙏

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/12/2024 08:58

Just popping in to make sure everyone's accounted for. ❤️

OP posts:
SingleThreadJoiner · 07/12/2024 09:14

@Mumtobabyhavoc we run it through the PTA, school families and other local neighbors can order a tree through the PTA who then puts in a bulk order with a supplier, and a couple of weeks later the tree is either delivered to your house (courtesy of the PTA) or ready to be collected from the school yard on a Sunday morning. Of course the trees are priced such that the PTA can make a profit on it, and it's actually a pretty good fundraiser. Loads of work for the PTA parents though!

@SpiritOfEdna that does sound amazing, so gutting that it's had to be cancelled!

FourSeasonsLobelia · 07/12/2024 09:50

Morning!

I like the sound of the PTA christmas trees. We tend to get ours from B&Q which is not nearly so interesting! Although someone told DH a few years back that if you wait until 4 pm Christmas eve you can get a tree for a penny so he went off with frugal hopes in his heart and they were all gone. 😐So that year we decorated our swiss cheese houseplant. 😆

Windy here as well, though we are only in a yellow warning zone. I'd hate to be in red, it's bad enough here!

Just a day of ironing and sorting today.

Hope everyone is well and @Peridot1 feels better soon. Thanks

Peridot1 · 07/12/2024 09:55

Morning all

All present and accounted for here @Mumtobabyhavoc. Although I did have to go out into the back garden earlier to rescue the recycling bin and its contents. And we have few garden chairs where they don’t normally live. It’s definitely windy out!

Such a shame your Sherlock Holmes event was cancelled @SpiritOfEdna.

@SingleThreadJoiner - it has been three different teeth I’ve had work on. One more invasive procedure in January and that will hopefully be it.

Thanks to the power of double antibiotics I’m feeling much better. Even managed to put a Christmas tree up yesterday. One more to do today and some bits and pieces and then I’m going to sort through the ridiculous amount of decorations I have and do a cull. I have boxes and boxes. So much so that this year I’ve actually felt overwhelmed by it all and not enjoyed the process. And I might need to stop looking at Pinterest and Facebook reels!

I also changed my bed yesterday and washed the bedding.

Today’s list:

  • dishwasher and kitchen
  • pack away ornaments that have to make way for Christmas stuff
  • put up second tree in kitchen/diner
  • re-arrange spa day next week - have a facial booked and I think face/jaw will be too tender still
  • write some Christmas cards

Have a great day all and stay safe if you are going out.

Aria999 · 07/12/2024 14:52

We order our tree normally from Home Depot as I can't fit a 7.5 foot tree in our Prius C.

It's a bit chancy, last year the top was broken and I sent it back.

This year they had made up the required height by leaving one random sideways branch near the top long (not the top central one) when they trimmed it. I assume the top branch had got broken. I removed it with clippers. It looked very odd.

So we have a rather shorter tree than planned, but I think it looks ok! No flashing lights @WinterFrog I don't like them either.

Daily Project Round 6
WinterFrog · 08/12/2024 06:59

Good morning! What a fabulous tree @Aria999 I am inspired! Will do ours in time for our next visit from our littlest.
I trust none of our number got blown away yesterday? I think @petal might be more towards a red warning area... As per @FourSeasonsLobelia I am grateful we are just yellow. DS is flying later. Wind is due to drop by then but I wonder if the weather will cause knock on delays. Last time I flew, we landed in very gusty winds so that was quite a ride! Pilots are amazing (as are modern planes!) So I'm trying not to worry about his trip.
Sorry your event was cancelled @SpiritOfEdna Will it be on at a later date? The production team must be gutted too.

@Peridot1 don't underestimate the power of antibiotics (particularly when they bring on the big guns)to make you feel a bit rubbish and like everything is Too Much 🤗 I mean they are like magic for treating an infection but you'll feel better when they are out of your system. So don't overdo it!

@SingleThreadJoiner to your 'how is it Friday night' I raise you an 'I can't believe it's Sunday already'. Before we know it, we'll have a new week. Dh is grumbling about Monday morning already. You have your hands full with your family at min 💐 Are you on the PTA? I always meant to, but never did, though I volunteered for events.

Success rate with new improved, WinterFrog is variable - there are good days and less good days, but it's a work in progress! I thank @FourSeasonsLobelia for inspiration for this, and of course all of you for the regular musings and impressive things that you all achieve ( even though they are often small steps, they are definitely encouraging!)

My day definitely starts better when it begins with water, a gratitude list and a read of a good book, rather than scrolling!

Am volunteering this morning 🐴 but this afternoon holds a clean of the fridge ( inside, on top, and behind, i think) and turning the spare room back into an office once DS leaves. It's been good having him here 💕

Best wishes to all ☕ 🍪

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/12/2024 07:35

Aria, I love your tree, too! I got ours from Home Depot last year, just a cheapie because I was on a mission to "just get it and put it up" as was very pregnant, and it was quite Charlie Brown the bottome 1/3. 😂😂😂
I atill didn't spend a lit thus year m, but got a natural (🤔) Douglas Fir and it is fairly decent.
Winter, I like your idea about how to start the day. ❤️
@newrubylane sounds satisfying. 😊
Peridot, hope you feel better very soon. No fun.
SoE, did I muss it, new door on? How did you chhose what to buy?

No tasks today. Was out afternoon to late night with dc taking in Christmas festivities, looking at shop window decos, lights on houses and went to an evening Santa parade. Must get back on track tomorrow.

OP posts:
petalpower · 08/12/2024 09:54

Ouch @Peridot1 - hope the antibiotics do their stuff. Tooth pain is the worst.
Oh my goodness @Mumtobabyhavoc - is it a year since your littlest was born.
I agree @SingleThreadJoiner where is the time going?
Sorry that your event was cancelled @SpiritOfEdna . What a shame when you were looking forward to it.
Beautiful tree @Aria999 . We haven’t put any decorations up yet apart from some lights around the fireplace. It was supposed to be a job for yesterday but I do it with DD and she had a last minute change of plan to spend the afternoon with her friend who had a c section earlier in the week and was needing a bit of TLC. Hopefully we will get the decorations up today. The weather looks pretty dreadful out there but we seem to have avoided the worst of the storm as were in East Anglia.
How is your mum doing settling in at the care home @WinterFrog ? I saw my dad on three consecutive days whilst we were local to him but he has no recollection of any of it and seems very low in mood. Dementia is a dreadful thing.
Hope I haven’t missed anyone out. Have a good day everyone and stay warm!

FourSeasonsLobelia · 09/12/2024 14:55

Hi all. Hope so much things are better today @Peridot1

@petalpower dementia is so awful as you say. Thanks

I hope everyone is fine and well. I deffo have good days and not so good days with my new mantra of not wasting time. Saturday was useless. Yesterday though I wrapped all presents for extended family and have written and sent Christmas cards. Today I have had 2 medical appointments for me. 1 for DS1 and I am about to go to another medical appointment for me. But I have also managed to get quite a bit of housework done.

We had a little bit of damage with downed fence panels in the storm but got off lightly. Hope everyone else UK-based escaped unscathed!

SpiritOfEdna · 09/12/2024 17:43

@Mumtobabyhavoc we went from needing one door to deciding to bite the bullet and replacing them all - a bit spendy before xmas, but it was on the list for next year😄so five new doors it is !!!! Although the joiner has started the do you mind me starting a day later....
Today has been a busy one already, couple of meetings this afternoon.

Today

  • get something out the shed that'll let me chop the bottom of the tree off as it is not sitting in the holder properly and is swaying. Same as last year (and the year before, and the year before.....)
  • need to make/hoover my bed, it is very sandy from the dog flopping on it from the beach yesterday and the room has no door....
  • the dog has grown wily to me wielding the scissors at her fur so will need to wait now till she goes to groomers on Friday. (hurrah my day off0
  • puppy sitting tomorrow for one at the bitey stage, so need to find a long sleeved top tonight to save my arms 😄
  • wash my hair!
  • work out how to tart up a door wreath, the one we bought is looking a bit sad.
As ever, early start, late finish, SoE
Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/12/2024 20:31

Petal, yes, a year has flown by and I'm mourning the nb stage heavily. Baby is fully walking, eating everything, (including non -food items like toilet paper), babbling up a storm. I wish I could have another, but the universe had other plans and I am so grateful and very, very lucky I have one dc let alone 2.
SoE, impressive list as always. New doors all around will be very nice. For the wreath, holly and little LED lights?
FourSeasons, I'm very impressed you have wrapped prezzies. 🤗

I'm just getting laundry done. I have so much to do and didn't get into the storage closet on the weekend which was very, very bad of me. 🙁
I have been out and about with dc like crazy taking them to various Christmas lights events and markets all over the lower mainland. Last night was Noel in Cloverdale which was a good hour drive out. 😵‍💫

Decorations are all up, cards are posted as are presents that needed posting. Lots of admin phone calls on behalf of my dad today. Also tax paperwork for carehome auntie who passed away earlier in the year, HMRC are the gift that keep on giving. Seem to have been busy all day just keeping on top of life admin!

WinterFrog · 10/12/2024 07:48

@Mumtobabyhavoc 💐
Those lights look lovely!
@petalpower mum is settling well, thank you. She's being well looked after and is really enjoying the company. You really have your hands full!
👋 everyone!
I plan on cleaning the inside of the oven today. I might go mad and change bedsheets as well!
Have a great day all

Peridot1 · 10/12/2024 09:42

Morning all.

I’m feeling a lot better thanks @FourSeasonsLobelia. Still some pain but not too bad. Even had more energy yesterday to do a few things.

Both Christmas trees are now up and got a bit more love yesterday than when they went up so I’m feeling a bit happier with them. Well one is a bit of a skinny disappointment really but I want to wait till the sales to buy a new one. Sadly am allergic to real trees.

Today’s list:

  • laundry - have a load on
  • diswasher/kitchen
  • finish Christmas decorations and start getting boxes back upstairs
  • organise pick up of dog stuff
  • mammogram!
  • write some Christmas cards

Have a great day all.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 10/12/2024 09:51

Morning all. Glad you are on the mend @Peridot1
Hi to everyone. I can hardly believe it's been almost a year since LittlestHavoc was born!
@WinterFrog , yes my temp job has ended, I forgot to answer that question!
Bitty day here - meeting at the school this morning with DS1's SENCO. Then a Christmas function I am taking an elderly neighbour to. In the meantime I need to sort out some admin and send presents!

I am thinking of you all with ill family members. It's such a strain. Thanks

SingleThreadJoiner · 10/12/2024 15:49

Hello all, glad noone got blown away, and thank you to those of you adding Christmas spirit to the thread with your photos!

I am indeed on the PTFA, because I am That Kind of Person (jokes aside, I have met some really nice parents from other years because of it, and I sort of enjoy it), and I did spend Sunday morning in the rain and wind loading and unloading trees off a van. It was very much not fun. Brrr.

We ended up with a taller-than-expected tree, in fact way too tall for our sitting room, and had to take a hacksaw to the top! But the result is a very tiny 'bonus' tree which D is delighted to have in her room, so that's worked out well for us. Decorations are still in the loft though 😆

@FourSeasonsLobelia hope you had a good meeting with the SENCO.

Things achieved yesterday:

  • ordered some tonies for D's Christmas present
  • sent some paperwork to the solicitor
  • ordered Christmas crackers for Christmas at PIL's
  • unexpectedly made biscuits after dinner with my D who asked out of the blue, and found a recipe that only took a few minutes, and it was hard to say no because Working Mom Guilt

Things to achieve before the end of the day:

  • send more paperwork to the solicitor - to do
  • tell my mom what to get D for Christmas - DONE
  • try to choose which pink-and-purple blanket to get D for Christmas (colour scheme requetsted by her) - Ongoing
petalpower · 10/12/2024 17:48

@FourSeasonsLobelia I try not to waste time too. I have a list for each day which I am ribbed mercilessly for by DH (who is not very efficient with his time!). If I have a pocket of time I try to find a job that will fit into the time eg: I had 10 minutes before I needed to set out for my aqua fit class today so I printed a recipe for the weekend, updated my diary with the change of bin collections for Christmas and New Year and hung up a wreath that needed string adding at the right length. Then on the way back from my class I dropped off glass recycling, filled up with diesel and bought four little Christmas decorations as we had a few gaps in the sitting room. Part of this is because we live quite rurally so I like to make the most of going out in the car. It is probably quite sad sounding for most people!!

Not sad. This is the total apogee of my desired existence!

I'm taking notes @petalpower 😍

WinterFrog · 11/12/2024 09:01

Morning! My organised morning got derailed by the conducting of not one but three simultaneous WhatsApp conversations 😳

But like @FourSeasonsLobelia I aspire to be more @petalpower I'm always so thrilled with myself when I am organised like that. I do find I get more organised the busier I get.

I have duties to perform for my mother today. She's come over all independent now she's settled in, and I have been issued with a list.

A mammogram on top of all the dental work @Peridot1! You're getting all the fun stuff this month. So worth it of course.

I need to book dentist for a check up and to arrange a fitting for a new mouth guard ( tooth grinder here) I suspect it was on my list a few days ago but I still haven't done it.

@single the PTA seems to get a bad rap round here but they do such valuable work! I hope you find the perfect blanket! It's all about the purple with the littlest in our family. It was pink and purple when her parents were tiny. I remember it well! Later on one of them painted a bedroom wall black.... That took a bit of covering over in later years!

I have promised DH a bacon sandwich for breakfast so I must do that then get on with something useful! Have a great day everyone 🎅 ☕ 👋

WinterFrog · 11/12/2024 17:13

Evening projecters, from the comfort of my bed. How decadent! Family stuff has caught up with me - today, specifically, my mother, complaining about all the things that haven't been done right. So sweet DH said go to bed, read a book, chill out and start again tomorrow 💕 He's just finished work and is cooking dinner. I may wrap some presents but it's quite likely that I won't. Rather like a computer, I need a reboot!

Aria999 · 11/12/2024 19:46

@SingleThreadJoiner I just became treasurer of our parent organization (not a PTA as that's a national organization and we apparently quit it in 2010) and it's a crazy headache from a tax and legal perspective.

Lots of records lost, lots of things changed in practice but not in the constitution (including the name of the organization and how we actually do almost everything) and we may need to start again with a whole new organization 😟
