Flowers to you @Mumtobabyhavoc for your feelings about Christmas.
The wind seems to have dropped a bit here from Storm Bert. We’re on the eastern side of the country though and I think have missed the worst of it. I’m having a very lazy start to the day and am planning on catching up with Strictly and the jungle from last night as we had friends over for dinner. I need to continue with the Christmas cards and start to wrap some presents to take when we go to see the oldies at the beginning of December.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/11/2024 20:44

Peridot, hmmm will have to cross that bridge when I come to it. I've also done phone calls when the 'checker' calls to ask if I've brushed Havoc's teeth or to make sure Havoc has cleaned up toys. 😉
How are you doing?

Large load of laundry done and banana bread made this morning. Vacuumed up crumbs etc from breakfast and vacuumed couches. Need to clean deck and pull out Christmas decos.
Off to a special event with dc shortly though. Hoping rain holds off, but unlikely.

Well, we are in Florida. At a lovely resort where the swimming pool heater is broken 😡 😡🥶 very little apology, no offer of reimbursement, grrr.

Would otherwise be perfect. Except that DS behavior as usual goes up the spout when we go on vacation (stroppy and entitled with a strong side order of being even more difficult about food than usual) and then DH gets super stressed and I wonder if I could have done something differently during the bringing up kids process to make my kids more willing to behave like civilized human beings.

Semi-civilized howler monkeys was DH suggestion and more or less fits.

WinterFrog · 25/11/2024 03:35

Hello! 💐 to all!
I am wide awake at 3.30am. Busy brain woke me at 1am, and then I found a huge spider in bathroom sink. Put it out but the adrenaline rush of seeing it woke me very thoroughly so here I am. And now the cat's gone out ( it'd windy and raining so he'll be back soon, so I'm waiting up for him)
I will not want to get up in the morning!
I have been writing a list for the week, and did wordle in 4.
See you all when it's morning.
👋 @Mumtobabyhavoc and @Aria999 I expect you're up and about!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/11/2024 04:26

Going on for 8:30pm here. Just finishing dinner. Spent the afternoon at the Christmas market and dc and I took Part in the lantern parade with Santa.

Aria, sorry about the pool situation. The pool is such a huge part of vacationing south! If you don't get any offer from hotel management try tweeting their sm. It was the only was Delta would respond and make amends when I had a flight change issue once. Kept it very polite and just the facts and what I would have expected.
Have a good vacay otherwise. ☺️

FourSeasonsLobelia · 25/11/2024 06:59

Morning all. So sorry to hear of the pool situation @Aria999 It's really tough when you look forward to something so much and then it goes wrong. I definitely relate to the howler monkeys. The Dcs are generally better now but the last day of our summer holiday saw me have a meltdown due to shattered expectations and people being so damned ungrateful.

Hope you got back to sleep @WinterFrog ! Wordle in 4! I have a habit of using words I know are not right to try and 'flush out' some correct letters. It's a strategy that fails me every time.

Gorgeous pics @Mumtobabyhavoc !

Busy two weeks ahead here- the project I was working on is due to come to an end on the 5th and it's manic trying to get it done in time. Then I ought to have several weeks off before a new project with the same organisation might come up (depending on funding....). I'll be glad of a break to be honest because we are abroad for Chjristmas and I am NOT ready.

Thanks to all.

WinterFrog · 25/11/2024 08:24

That looks very festive and very cold @Mumtobabyhavoc 🎅
I hope you get the pool situation sorted @Aria999 How disappointing!

A sleepy wave to @FourSeasonsLobelia 👋 I made it back to bed at 4am, and I'm sitting up clutching a coffee, attempting to wake up. Lots to do today and I'd planned a 6.30 get up. I had all but the first wordle letter on my second attempt but there were many options! Got it in 5 not 4 🙊
Right, up, shower, go!

Have a great day all 💕

Peridot1 · 25/11/2024 09:55

Morning all.

How frustrating @Aria999. Both the pool and the howler monkeys issue!

@Mumtobabyhavoc - that looks lovely and festive. I am doing well thanks. Last day of liquid diet today thankfully although it’s DH’s birthday and I’d normally cook something he requested. Not today. I’m still on soup and I’m not sure what he’s planning for him and DS.

@WinterFrog - I was awake about the same time as you but tried to keep off my phone other than finding sleep stories on the Calm app. Which eventually worked.

i got Wordle in four today too. Relieved as there were more options! @FourSeasonsLobelia your Wordle technique is officially called an elimination word. I do it all the time.

My plan for today is to deep clean the kitchen. Or at least start on it. Oven is being cleaned tomorrow. And book a spa day. I have a voucher that expires on 23 December. Also need to take a photo of a big square footstool/coffee table to try to dispose of on Freecycle. And a tv unit to a charity collection.

Have a great day all.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/11/2024 09:56

1:50am here... still awake. Been on Amazon since 10:30pm looking at 1st birthdays decos for baby. 🤦‍♀️

It was 7c, so chilly, but not cold. Parade went awry as peopke stopped for pics along the way and market goers who hadn't a clue what was happening got in the way. 😵‍💫 Throw in toddlers and strollers... you get the picture. 😂🤷‍♀️

SingleThreadJoiner · 25/11/2024 12:19

Hello all, so much sleeplessness all around...I was up at 2.15am as D needed the toilet, and whinged a bit before going back to sleep, we were then both very unimpressed when the alarm went off for our Monday school run.

@Aria999 I am very annoyed on your behalf for the swimming pool!!

Sounds like Christmas is going to be an emotional time for everyone. I don't know how many we have left with PILs so will try to make it memorable for all concerned (even though personally I am very much not a Christmassy person).

H will be home tomorrow, assuming trains from the SouthWest don't give up. It sounds like it's been truly horrible for some with the storm - glad noone here had any serious damage.

In the meantime over the past few days I've done two loads of laundry, put some of it away, threw out some expired food from the fridge with a very heavy heart, made a healthy dinner for D and me, sorted out February half term, and ordered some bits on H&M - discovered that my D's wellies had basically worn down to a hole on the heel!

TODAY I would like to accomplish:

  • two loads of laundry
  • put away all dry laundry
  • arrange passing on of some shoes to another mum
  • arrange passing on of some clothes to another another mum

Sunny thoughts to all

petalpower · 25/11/2024 14:48

I was also awake but think it was about 4am. Worrying that I hadn’t turned the lights off on DD’s car (mine are automatic) which I had to borrow yesterday evening as my rear lights suddenly decided not to work just as I was setting out for a birthday dinner for a friend. Garage can’t see my car until Wednesday which is a bit of a pain. I can still drive it during the daytime (brake lights still fine so all safe). Today feels like I’ve been constantly doing errands. We have a rental house which DH is redecorating before new tenants come
in so went over there to choose paint colours, picked up diesel on the way, went to decorator centre to get paint mixed, picked up medication for DD, picked up
posters from the printers for
my orchestra group, posted an eBay parcel and a Christmas card to Australia, dropped the paint back to DH and have now come
home to start house jobs and do admin.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 26/11/2024 06:55

Oooh I like i have a named technique for wordle @Peridot1 !

Hope your DH got home safely @SingleThreadJoiner

I have to ban myself from Amazon right now @Mumtobabyhavoc . Last time I went on i was trying to buy earplanes for the DCs and i before our flight (they regulate the air pressure on descent and drastically reduce ear pain) and ended up buying earplanes, three dresses I don't need and a new set of bedding. Stuff I really don't need before the Christmas frenzy!

Hope the birthday dinner went well @petalpower !

Waves to everyone.

I am feeling smug because although we got home late last night I managed to wash and iron a load. Buses all delayed due to roadworks and diversions and shuttle buses laid on. For now the £2 per trip makes it cheaper to travel by bus and i quite like sitting on the top and looking at other peoples' gardens.

Hope everone has a good day!

WinterFrog · 26/11/2024 08:22

Welcome back to the world of lumpy food @Peridot1 😁 Good luck with the boy training! Just tip the washing on his bed. When you reach the point of leaving him to do his own laundry he'll be less inclined to trample it all over the carpet. Baby steps!
Ps I'm going to forbid you to iron his clothes! 💐
I also like an exclusion word. Today I accidentally used my yesterday's choice of word, swore under my breath and followed it up with the one DH had chosen for this morning and found myself with all five letters just in the wrong order so got it in three! It was pre coffee, in my defence.

Sorry to hear i wasn't the only insomniac the other night. I powered through yesterday with no time or desire for lunch, and slept like a log last night. So hopefully rebooted.

I like a proper bus ride from time to time too @FourSeasonsLobelia We often visited mum in hospital by bus as it saved the extortionate parking fees. It's quite relaxing isn't it?

Do you ever wonder how you found time to go to work @petalpower? I am finding all the erranding quite exhausting at the moment. I think we are currently on a similar path. I've become a kind of project manager, and currently my (self employed) work is mostly on hold.

There's a truth in the saying about if you want something done, ask a busy person. My dad said it a lot. My current responsibilities have caused me to be more organised so I'm achieving quite a lot.

Hope DH is safely home @SingleThreadJoiner The weather has been really awful. I love that LO has made holes in her wellies before she outgrew them! Tells of many puddles jumped in!

👋 everyone else! I hope you all have a happy and productive day!

My round the house one project is to pull the sofa out and vacuum up where I used foam cleaner to clean a coffee stain. I also plan to be ruthless with cobwebs.

Peridot1 · 26/11/2024 09:31

What a busy thread! Pre Christmas business is upon us all along with everyone’s caring responsibilities.

@WinterFrog - baby steps indeed. One of my many tasks on the long finger is to teach him how to iron a shirt. I know I have done too much for him over the years but when you only have one I think it’s easy to do. Although my sister has five and hers are also a bit rubbish on the household front! We suspect it’s a reaction to being expected to do too much when we were growing up. We went too far the other way.

I had real food last night! A day early but it was DH’s birthday and DS wasn’t hungry so he was looking a bit crestfallen at cooking at eating alone and I suggested savoury mince and mashed potatoes so that what we had. I’m still on soft foods for a while now but it’s so nice not to have soup all the time.

I started the kitchen deep clean yesterday. Lights over island unit washed. Windows done, window sills and everything on them. Microwave cleaned inside and out. Walls dusted. Surfaces cleaned. I have someone coming to do the ovens this morning. Still to do the shelves in the island unit, the wine rack and wash down the outsides of all the cupboards. Plus tidy and sort and clean inside of pantry and fridge.

I also need to do usual dishwasher empty, quick vacuum and put some washing on. Plus package a gift from my friend in Australia and post it. And wrap a shoebox of gifts for a refugee charity.

Have a great day all.

SpiritOfEdna · 26/11/2024 14:23

hello, just a fly by. Am back from Cornwall (surprising good weather!). Have been finding mumsnet unworkable on my phone (constant freezing) so will go and have a read back before normal service resumes tomorrow WITH A LIST 😃

FourSeasonsLobelia · 26/11/2024 19:11

Okay- I have to report a very very major win!

DS1 (aged 14) has just eaten....... [drumroll]....... a boiled potato.

He has never ever eaten a boiled potato. Baked with cheese yes, hash browns yes. Chips yes. Just plain boiled with the skin on and butter - First Time Ever.

I made breaded basa (breaded by me and fried by me) and usually make him a DS1-friendly potato something. But today i was tired and just plopped it on the plate. 6 quarters.

All gone.

(Edited to add- he has food issues. Understatement).

WinterFrog · 26/11/2024 20:11

I get you re your son @Peridot1 I still like to mother mine too. My crew learnt out of necessity as at one time we were all living at home either at college or working full time and it was a bit like student digs for a bit, with ex having absented himself. I provided food and paid the bills but we were just passing each other in the doorway so it was every man/woman for himself. Not a strategy I'd necessarily recommend but they all survived more or less unscathed.
Things are much more peaceful now thankfully.

Welcome home @SpiritOfEdna Hope you had a fab time.

Another long day here but I achieved a clean kitchen floor and managed to get a team effort dinner on the table. I did not hoover though behind the sofa, I sat on it instead with a glass of wine in my hand.

Tomorrow's another day!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/11/2024 00:26

No major tasks today. BUT, yesterday I cleaned the fridge out and cleaned bathroom sink and toilet then the floor. Also vacuumed including under couch cushions.
Dentist appointment earlier today. Treated myself to a pastry and cup of tea in a rather noice cafe.

ooooh.... I covet one of those cakes!

FourSeasonsLobelia · 27/11/2024 07:52

Morning again.

I have been most active this morning. I have done 2 loads of washing already and started putting clothes away. I very much recognise the meme that washing takes 2 hours, drying takes 1 hour and putting clothes away takes 5-7 business days.

I have decided that I am simply wasting too much time. I spend too much time watching tv/ scrolling on my phone etc. So my (early) New Year's Resolution is to not waste time. So today I plan to finish my Christmas cards on my lunchbreak rather than scroll MN. Then when I am waiting for the Dcs to turn up on the bus I will have a quiet glass of wine and write up the Christmas list.

here's to a new and efficient Lobelia. 🤔

I also plan to write a list of what I need to teach the DCs... ironing a shirt is definitely on the agenda @Peridot1 !!

I hope everyone is well and fine and all loved ones as well.

Hugs to you all.

Peridot1 · 27/11/2024 08:24

@WinterFrog DH learned his household abilities in a similar manner to your lot. I suppose I did too in a way. I was the oldest and then two came along quite close together and I was just expected to do things.

@FourSeasonsLobelia - that’s definitely worth a drum roll! DS hasn’t eaten a boiled potato for years. Roast, chipped, has browns yes.

@SpiritOfEdna glad you had a good time.

@Mumtobabyhavoc looks yum!

@FourSeasonsLobelia what time were you up??? I’m awake since about 3 but have achieved nothing! Except tea drinking.

Yesterday a lovely lady came and cleaned my oven/stove. Big tick.

I washed the front door and the windows either side, de-cobwebbed the oak porch frame and swept the slabs in front of the door. Need to go to the garden centre to buy some nice plants for the planters by the front door. Am thinking red cyclamens and ivy.

I also started sorting the utility room which is at the looking worse before it looks better stage. I’m reorganising it a bit as I’ve gained a cupboard due to not needing dog stuff.

Today :

  • PT session
  • dishwasher/kitchen
  • laundry
  • put laundry away
  • contact a dog rescue about donating all of our dog stuff
  • finish utility room

Have a great day all.

petalpower · 27/11/2024 09:24

That’s fantastic @FourSeasonsLobelia !
I definitely don’t know how I ever had time to work @WinterFrog . In my past life I was a deputy head working full time, DH worked away Monday to Friday, the children were both at secondary school and I was chair of governors at a school I didn’t work at. When I look back I can’t believe how mad my life was.

WinterFrog · 27/11/2024 09:44

Loves to you all my coffee house friends! @Mumtobabyhavoc those cakes look epic!

Here's to a new and efficient Lobelia

My daily goal too... a new and efficient WinterFrog

Every day is a new day!

There's something going on for all of us isn't there? Past and/or present. Scratch the surface with anyone....

I wish you all a lovely and productive day 💕
