Rent-a-mob. BBC News reports:

Smoke canisters deployed
Less than two hours after the Southport community met to mark a minute’s silence, just a few streets away from that vigil location the air was pierced by smoke canisters, jeers and rocks raining down on riot police.
Hundreds of protesters gathered near a local mosque attacking the front of it, throwing bricks, bottles and rocks, many with hoods up and scarves hiding their faces.
Families living nearby who had come to see what all the noise was all about feared for their safety as stones flew past and police officers rushed to put on riot gear and pick up shields.
“I can’t believe this is happening in Southport,” one young woman shouted from the front of her car as she tried to drive her young daughter away.

Police van set alight in Southport clashes
Footage from the scene of unrest in Southport circulated on social media shows the situation has deteriorated.
A police van has been set alight and some of the crowd have been seen throwing missiles at police officers.

It’s not hard to connect

Easy to make fallacious 'connections'.

It’s not about your connections, this is similar to the response in Dublin after children were attacked

Politicians and mners can ignore the tensions but they won’t be resolved that way

I find it weird that people say the families would not want protests or heckling, how on earth can they know? And just assuming it's far right protesting is ridiculous. Knife crime has been out of control in this country, particularly among children, for far too long, if I saw Starmer I'd want to shout at him to DO something about it too. That might mean a lot more money for schools for PRUs etc. But he does need to make it a priority.

No-one can know who all of the hecklers were and people process grief in different ways. Some of those heckling probably knew those children.

Come off it. It was far-right types all over social media yesterday and today spreading false stories about a mythical Moslem immigrant being responsible for this, and today there's a riot outside a mosque - how likely do you think it is that that is coincidental? Strange that they can't find it in them to demonstrate against misogyny.

All the posters who have posted thinly veiled (and not so thinly veiled) Islamophobia on this thread and the two threads that were deleted have helped fan these flames. Hope you are all proud of yourselves.

Yeah, I'm sure they're glued to the TV right now, cheering it all on.

Jesus fucking wept. Just think.

Attacking the police.. police who ran towards an armed and dangerous man to comfort and try and protect dying children.

These people doing this have absolutely no right. Protesting about what exactly. Just brain dead knuckle daggers. They should be ashamed

Spell it out. Explain why it's necessary for the mob to attack police officers and a mosque because a youth who is almost certainly not a Muslim is in custody on suspicion of committing a horrific attack.

Who said it was necessary?

I said it was foreseeable and is similar to Dublin riots

These kinds of tensions are rising in many countries and a horrific event can be the trigger

Why would you target a mosque re knife crime?

Oh well yes, it's all too grimly predictable.

Police statement saying it's EDL

We can confirm officers are dealing with a disturbance during a protest in Southport this evening (Tuesday 30 July).

At around 7.45pm, a large group of people – believed to be supporters of the English Defence League – began to throw items towards a local mosque on St Luke’s Road in Southport.
Officers who are deployed are currently dealing with criminal behaviour and violence with bottles and wheelie bins being thrown at them.
As a result, an officer has suffered a suspected broken nose and police vehicles have been damaged and set alight.
Additional patrols are now in attendance, including the Dog Section.
Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss said: “It is sickening to see this happening within a community that has been devastated by the tragic loss of three young lives.
“In the last 24 hours, we have seen overwhelming support and sympathy from the community and wider Merseyside communities for the families who are currently trying to deal with their loss and care for victims injured during the major incident.
“Yesterday, our officers and other members of the emergency services were faced with one of the most difficult situations they will ever face. Tonight, they find themselves being attacked as they endeavor to prevent disorder.
“The actions in Southport tonight will involve many people who do not live in the Merseyside area or care about the people of Merseyside.
“There has been much speculation and hypothesis around the status of a 17-year-old male who is currently in police custody and some individuals are using this to bring violence and disorder to our streets.
“We have already said that the person arrested was born in the UK and speculation helps nobody at this time.
“Our officers should not have to face this, but we will be there tonight to ensure the safety of the local community who have suffered enough, and will arrest those involved in criminal behavior.”
If you have any information on this incident or saw what happened, please contact our social media desk on Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook 'Merseyside Police Contact Centre'.

This is shameful. Those people likely didn't sleep last night now they're dealing with this shit outside their houses.

spikeandbuffy · 30/07/2024 21:19

The people throwing bricks would be more help if they went and donated blood but critical thinking doesn't seem to be their strong point

Foxlover46 · 30/07/2024 21:20

These little girls with so much life to live , so loved by their families just wiped out like that. So very sorry 😭x

EDL, why does it not surprise me. Idiots. They don’t give a fuck about the children or their families, all they care about is hate.

They might not know now, but do you think they won’t ever find out? Southport is a town, everyone will know and even if immediate family members haven’t seen it, extended family members will.

It’s all over main stream media, their liaison officers may even tell them to stop them finding out from other sources. We were told of everything that was happening in the media directly by our family liaison officers - of course they’ll find out!

Rioting and causing damage and injury when all services are under pressure is inane and/or insane. What an idiotic response.

You know the key word there? “Apparently”.

I’ve seen that video circulating too, funny that it’s an unverified page and there’s absolutely no report anywhere from a reputable source of a man being arrested for carrying a knife.

I fucking despair at how stupid people can be, so quick to believe everything they read on social media.

boysmadeofchocolate · 30/07/2024 21:36

The police need to talk to the community leaders so they can try and calm the situation instead of going in there full pelt. It will only aggravate an already volatile situation.

I am not going to link, but the Twitter source I saw seems to be, shall we say, about as reputable as the one that circulated the false name.

That's a giveaway. You don't believe people born in the UK who happen to be Muslin or Romany or black are actually British, do you? Do you have to be white to be British/English?
