Interesting in our local hustings - all of the candidates were able to say where they lived and how long they've been in this constituency (over 20 years for all of them) except for our hopefully outgoing Tory MP who was parachuted in years ago and can't find their way around the area at the best of times.

I’m with you pointy. Putting this mess right is a serious business and I very much like Starmer and Reeves’ grown up approach. I’m particularly impressed with all the preparation with big business behind the scenes. I suspect talks have already been planned with the junior doctors too. I don’t want to be excited this time round. Competence works for me.

That will be sad for Atkins. She was very clear she’d get round the table and negotiate with junior doctors if the Tories won.

This is how I feel, competence & not telling bare faced lies also seeing the back of blatant cronyism would be a really good start.
just got back from my final stint of canvassing, I’ve only had one person mention VAT on schools & one other brought up Gender, lots about the mismanagement of the economy & general behaviour of the Tory party.

Just had a really depressing convo with ds

We just don't feel hopeful at all wrt labour

The best we can come up with is "they can't be any worse, surely!?"

His friend knows a couple of the people who were at the Warwick tory nazi singing party...apparently they are properly nasty types who are very angry they didn't get into Oxbridge

Blimey, the only person I know of that went to Warwick was one of ds1s friends. Admittedly he has left now as graduated a few years ago, but he was one of the smartest kids I've ever met (ds1 had to work really hard to keep up). Neither Oxford or Cambridge were on his university shortlist. I find it hard to believe Warwick is full of angry Oxbridge rejects. Shock

My dc are very happy that we are likely to get a change of government, as are the young people that I work with. They accept that it's not all going to be roses, but they are hopeful that society will have the chance to improve.

Totally agree. And even more serious politics if LD end up in opposition.

Also agree.

@user8800 - https://www.youtube.com/@ADifferentBias has done quite a few explanations of the polling data and media disconnect and possible reasons behind it. Well worth watching on 2x speed.

Great excitement. Hallelujah. Just had first canvasser. Very young lad for Labour. I feel a bit bad that I gave him (or his party) a bit of a hard time because I told him I was disappointed in the direction Labour was taking on some things. But he left happy with the 4 Labour votes from my house.

Dorries has been poison round here, though. He said they can't even say the Labour candidate is from Luton because it isn't considered local enough. I mean, yes, Nadz living in the Cotswolds was AN issue but it wasn't THE issue.

I did thank him for coming round! I wish I'd said well done , too.

Nadine Dorries place of residence I would say was the least thing to be concerned about.

Rishiispushed · 01/07/2024 19:35

Quite.

She was shite when she lived in the constituency!

I have a question re sex and gender. Genuine curiosity because I was teaching it today. If I were a GC feminist would I not call the gender pay gap a thing? I think this is the 'correct' use of the term isn't it? Or is the attempt to remove the word gender full stop? MN makes me fell very on edge about the language I use whereas IRL no one ever 'corrects' it. What about gender based violence?

I'm 3 with pointy

I had my doubts but this election campaign but sealed it for me that Labour are the best we have overall.

I still prefer some Ld and green policies but as a party they have started to govern well imo just through the campaign with their attitude and forward planning.

itsgettingweird · 01/07/2024 19:43

With regards Warwick uni - from those who've we known applying past few years that are ds age it's harder to get in than Oxbridge in many ways.

Certainly since the way the unis have weighted places it's become a favourite with indie educated pupils.

user8800 · 01/07/2024 19:43

I think labour are lying (as do the IFS btw)...

Doesn't feel great 😕

I'm all for some boredom and normality in politics, but honesty is more important to me

Time will tell

Good question.

I think they should remove the word gender altogether. It's actual sex based crime and sex based pay gap.

What exactly is gender? That's my question every time someone says to me "geneder identity". I ask how one identifies as male or female.

When someone can give me an answer that isn't based on personal ideas of stereotypes I'll let you know!

Gender is used in place of sex there. It’s not really a problem, as long as you know it means biological sex. I mean, I don’t scream IT’s SEX NOT GENDER!! any time anyone uses it, but I think having a ‘polite’ term for sex <Miranda Voice> has muddied the waters quite a bit when we need to put the safety and dignity of biological females at the forefront.

user8800 · 01/07/2024 19:48

Sex is biological fact.
Gender is a societal construct.

Hmm but the pay gap is because of assigned roles isn't it? And these are gender roles. We aren't paid less specifically because we have a vagina. But because long social history believes women should not be in workplaces. That's an understanding of what our sex manes in an area of social life and that's gender? Sex is the biology and gender is the assigned role we are expected to play? Gender scripts are a thing, too , on sociology speak.

I assume there are storming debates in sociological ivory towers about this.

Yes, that's a more succinct version of my previous waffle!!

(although some scientists would say there is no such thing as fact - which is a whole fascinating branch of science!)

It’s quite fascinating on an intellectual level to see how Gender has superseded Sex over the last few decades, when it’s much more restrictive a concept for females and males.

Rishiispushed · 01/07/2024 20:02

Re the SDP. Gosh. If I hadn't been paying attention I could have thought that was a BNP ad...

I’d agree. Look at the history of computer science/coding. Historically it was seen as a job for women. It wasn’t until relatively recently that it became dominated by men and women have to ‘break into’ the workplace. That’s not to do with sex that’s a societal thing. Society assigns the roles.
