The thing I despair about though @itsgettingweird and @SerendipityJane is how people seem soooo easily taken in. As if they hear what they want to hear and get tunnel vision as a result. Don't they notice how aggressive and thin-skinned NF is?

It was the same with Doris. The impression he gave me was of someone deeply unhappy in their own skin, uncomfortable, shy and shifty. But apparently he had charismaConfused. And a plan. Confused. Look past the posh accent, good vocab and confident front people please.

Farage is clearly trying to appeal to people as down to earth and unpretentious, one of us? When he was a rich banker! It maddens me that people fall for this.

Daddy ishooos

I realised in the run up to and aftermath of the Brexit referendum how gullible some people were. There was a thread on Facebook with people saying they were voting for Brexit so they could buy New World wines in the UK. This was despite a visit to any supermarket showing they were already available.

Cheguevarahamster · 01/07/2024 17:03

Afternoon all and to the lovely newbies.

Just catching up and listening to the shaved Afghan wittering on about a super majority on LBC earlier. "Democracy is better served with a smaller majority" Its hilarious how he wasn't so bothered when it was a Tory (Boris) majority.

bombastix · 01/07/2024 17:05

I have just read my first copy of the New European with my Tory bingo card. Really good! Thanks to @Evenstar

Thanks too @Evenstar .
I didn't order though. I picked it up at a Sainsburys local. (Newspaper section) Its a fantastic magazine and poster.

Massive Tory majority "hurrah, we can do what we like and nobody can stop us. It's marvellous"
Massive Labour majority "this is terrible, they can do what they like and we can't stop them. It's terrible".

Best wishes to you and ds @medianewbie .

With Johnson I know people seemed to think he was "fun" and that was supposed to be his appeal (Hmm) but with Farage, unless you're a certain sort of person, he just seems so unsavoury as a politician. When he's being serious etc. I didn't watch I'm a celebrity.

He's almost a reverse Boris Johnson.

And then you see people on vox pops talking about Reform and they're almost treating the party as a fun novelty act "might give them a go!" Rather than ex Tories who want to take it further to the right. Or the "let's blame the crap in my life on foreigners" type.

The fun novelty act is very worrying but hopefully will be seen through and tired of quickly.

Boris Johnson would have made an ace classics presenter on the BBC.

user8800 · 01/07/2024 18:13

I volunteered with someone who voted for de pfeffle in 2019 because "it will be a "laugh"...

Sadly, their incipient drink problem became full blown alcoholism during the lockdowns and killed him earlier this year.

I know several people who voted leave in 2016 and tory in 2019 who are no longer here as a direct result - imo - of brexshit medication shortages, tory benefit policies and covid mismanagement

🤷

MissMarplesNiece · 01/07/2024 18:15

Who is the shaved Afghan?

I wonder if the Tories are puzzled as to where a lot of their supporters have gone ?

user8800 · 01/07/2024 18:16

Just had a really depressing convo with ds

We just don't feel hopeful at all wrt labour

The best we can come up with is "they can't be any worse, surely!?"

His friend knows a couple of the people who were at the Warwick tory nazi singing party...apparently they are properly nasty types who are very angry they didn't get into Oxbridge

It's certainly got to be an issue, hasn't it?

Boris Johnson would have made an ace classics presenter on the BBC.

He would have talked bollox and been chasing women whilst trying to avoid any work

I feel more or less the opposite of where you are. This was never going to be 1997 all over again. The current Labour party are being very sensible not to promise too much. I don't even hold their vagueness against them, because they don't know how much more of a shitshow they're going to find when they get into number 10. Things may very well be much worse than anticipated; the Tories haven't exactly been transparent and accountable.

I'm looking forward to sober, serious politics and steady rebuilding from where we are now.

tobee · 01/07/2024 18:40

Chris Philp is the shaved afghan @MissMarplesNiece .

Yeah I agree Boris Johnson would be way too lazy to manage a tv show let alone series.

Totally agree. And even more serious politics if LD end up in opposition.

I don't know anyone who has voted Labour with enthusiasm, including the young people I know.

Perhaps it's an area specific thing?

It would help if the candidate actually lived in this constituency...

Although the LD candidate lives in Manchester!! (About 2.5 hours away by car...)

Escentricmolecule · 01/07/2024 18:45

I cannot wait for politics to get boring again.

The last 8 years have been completely bonkers, and the 4 before those (austerity) weren't much fun either.

BIossomtoes · 01/07/2024 18:46

I’m with you pointy. Putting this mess right is a serious business and I very much like Starmer and Reeves’ grown up approach. I’m particularly impressed with all the preparation with big business behind the scenes. I suspect talks have already been planned with the junior doctors too. I don’t want to be excited this time round. Competence works for me.

We must mix in different circles. I am fully aware that there's no magic money tree, Labour can't perform miracles, they're inheriting the biggest shit show in my living memory and Starmer can't promise much.

Having said that, I am more enthusiastic about voting Labour than I have been for years, and so are many of my friends and neighbours. People I have never discussed politics with before have been talking about how good it will be to get a serious leader in and a serious party.

It boils down to not worrying about what the next huge corruption issue will be, and believing that we are getting back to how things once were.

bombastix · 01/07/2024 18:55

Yes I hope we can break the trauma bond where basically we all get dopamine or adrenaline every time the Conservatives do something. Boring will be good. The more shouty end of the political market can be with the New Tories who are clearly not done with being unhinged yet.
