Ohhh haha.
Can I blame COVID on my brain freeze moment?

If you count Scottish as "regional" Wink Kirsty Wark has been around on national TV since the 1990s.

Trevor McDonald became the anchor presenter for ITN's News at Ten in 1992.

Krishnan Guru-Murthy joined Channel 4 News in 1998 (having been one of the launch presenters of BBC News 24 in 1997).

Moira Stuart was presenting the BBC News in the 1980s and won best newscaster of the year in 1988.

I think it's testament though to the majority of contributors to these threads that the ethnicity and the regionality of these newscasters was, in effect, unremarked (or should that be "unremarkable"?) Smile

TaraTories · 30/06/2024 16:13

Well I for one haven't been particularly surprised at it's overt return from shadows from brickwork.

As if to also rebut my post, Rishi reckons it is a "better" place to live in than 2010. Maybe I'm misreading definitions? www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/jun/30/rishi-sunak-launches-defence-tories-record-election-campaign-nears-end

Thought this was quite perceptive in terms of the Reform vote

I see that a Reform UK Ltd candidate (for Erewash) has discovered where bears toilet.

TaraTories · 30/06/2024 16:29

@Evenstar I thought the fact that they wear masks at the rallies might signal their reticence about supporting Reform in public. Then I realised they were probably known members of the very BNP Nige reckons he has reformed/abolished - define at will. Creepy pic of the Nige Face mask in this article https://news.sky.com/story/nigel-farage-says-some-bnp-supporters-gravitate-to-reform-uk-as-he-defends-handling-of-racism-row-13161281

Evenstar · 30/06/2024 16:31

@TaraTories very possible, I was saying to DH that might well be a few persons of interest to the police in that crowd

SerendipityJane · 30/06/2024 16:34

I would have thought tattoo recognition is how you'd winkle out former BNP members.

Evenstar · 30/06/2024 16:58

Meanwhile TikTok can see what Reform are 🙄

I worked behind a bar in the late 80s - early 90s. Watching that CH4 News report brought it all back, it was nearly word for word because racists never change, they just keep it in unless sure of their audience. The men in the bar apologised if they thought I’d overheard, but not for actually saying it iyswim.
I don’t think it ever went away, it just became less acceptable, but now it’s seen as ok.

Resigned due to -

"the reports of widespread racism and sexism in Reform have made clear that there is a significant moral issue within certain elements of the party, and the failure of the Party’s leadership to not only take this matter seriously, but also to fundamentally address it, has made clear to me that this is no longer a party I want to be associated with."

Won't pretend I'm not a bit surprised it's taken him this long but am not going to knock him for it. We need to see a bit more of this.

Saucery · 30/06/2024 17:03

There was an ex Reform member on the Today program this week who is now running as an independent. He saw the way the party was going and wanted nothing to do with it. I’ll not knock a man for not seeing any organisation launched by Tice and with Farage sliming round it was always going to end up that way. I just wish more people would see it and quickly.

The feeling that these racists now have that it's "OK" to spout their hateful drivel stems from the referendum. Fartage's racist bile and that spouted by many Tories, was "validated" in their eyes by the 52% "victory".

I used to think that the UK wasn't particularly racist (apart from a few old people who were too stupid to realise how things had changed), but that may have been because I lived in London, where there is obviously less racism simply because of the demographics.

I'm afraid that the Leave campaign and the subsequent outbreak of racism broke my illusions very rapidly...

I spect its probably a bit of oversensitivity from too many online barneys! I do it too sometimes!

L1ttledrummergirl · 30/06/2024 17:13

I've just watched Sunaks interview with Kuenssberg this morning. Dh rolled his eyes at me yelling at the t.v again, but for fucks sake, every other word out of his mouth was a lie, and delivered with the whiny tone of someone pleading to be believed when they know that you know they are lying. It's an unattractive trait most people are parented out of when they are around 3.

SerendipityJane · 30/06/2024 15:44

I was reading through from this morning when someone mentioned that we don't see ourselves as racist as a nation.

Anyone who knows me well will know my borderline obsession with definitions. Mainly because it's avoiding them that allows fascists (other extremists are available) to flourish.

Surely we all known that stinging shame of being told "well if you don't know ..." as a way of removing you, your views, your experience, your curiosity and your agency in a debate ? I've certainly known it. Especially when it's deliberate.

There is a world of difference between noticing that humans come in a staggering array of colours and trivial physical attributes and using them as a basis for society.

John Lloyd has a interesting way of dealing with questions about belief in God. "You tell me what you believe and I'll tell you why I don't". I believe it's called an ignostic,

I keep getting asked to define fascist/far right on here and then when I do getting told I don't understand
Meanwhile the people asking me are very coy about their own definitions. It's infuriating and I wish I knew the best way to respond.
I read this (sorry for the source/topic) which I found very interesting about a particular type of tactic that I definitely recognise.
https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/5050/anti-trans-transphobia-gender-critical-mirror-propaganda/

E.g.
“Whenever people keep being given a platform to say they have no platform, or whenever people speak endlessly about being silenced, you not only have a performative contradiction; you are witnessing a mechanism of power.”

Unfortunately I think some of these nasty fascist types are wiggling their way in by teaming up on controversial issues. Not sure what we do to counter it. 😞

I have to say I went out with a man who literally had as his fb picture a knight in shining armour (one of those little models that were popular in tourist attractions in the early 90s). He had a saviour complex but was possibly the most selfish man I had ever met.

I wonder if they might be related as this guys family were divided over whether they spoke to him or not too! Must be something about the blinding lack of adaption one can do as the main character in the story of everyone else's life?

I don't think the UK has ever been under the illusion we weren't racist. Maybe for a glimmer around the time we hosted the Olympics but it was quite swiftly back to status quo thereafter. I think most of us remember the graffiti NF and how "unusual" it was to have a black newsreader such as the amazing Moira Stuart. I don't remember seeing many Asian faces or regional accents on mainstream TV or radio until around 2010's either...

Edit to add stark realisation that this may be why I had no idea dour was Scottish ergo probably pronounced to rhyme with door.

Edited

They sued him and won.
He's got older kids and now younger ones with a younger woman but she threw him out, I believe...

He spoke at my dcs university last year, and he was SO vile about a late labour mp that his time was cut short by their lecturer...

He is exactly what he seems to be to be fair. A privileged, short, angry, white middle aged man.

Absolutely loathed by his ex tory local party and has had to campaign alone for years.

I will be delighted if he gets as few votes as I suspect 😉

user8800 · 30/06/2024 17:43

I had a boss many years ago who loved the referendum party (remember them!?)

He had bumper stickers made of a St. George's flag with a Knight on horseback with a lance sort of spearing the flag 🤔

I never really got it. He was a bear of very small brain 😬

tobee · 30/06/2024 18:01

Looking at it from the other way around, if you aren't racist and a misogynist why would you be attracted to Reform? Especially now we've had Brexit which was a thing to hide your views behind.

Next time you're asked to define racism...

I've just seen a bit of Farage'qs rally/conference on tv. My mother's family were persistent Mosley disrupters in the 30s. She had a lot to tell about his gatherings and blackshirt supporters. If she were here today she would know what she is seeing. So do I. Its very concerning that many don't recognise what they're embracing.

My grandad was the same back then. People are sleepwalking into the heart of darkness.

I think perhaps people don’t recognise it because it’s a kind of fascist dad’s army. A bunch of old/middled aged men who don’t fit the stereotype.
