"I am getting a bit sick to be honest of cabinet ministers gaslighting about this issue."

Why was Frank Hester forgiven when he 'never accepted' his comments about Diane Abbott were racist? @Lewis_Goodall challenges Oliver Dowden.

@SerendipityJane
I'm sure he will be basing a lot of his ego on what a random woman on Mumsnet is saying. I chose not to use his full name as I was trying to avoid the bots etc coming here and filling the thread with rubbish.
Afterall we all knew who I meant :-).

English is a very versatile language. Mainly because it just steals words without caring.

I believe "Farage" in German is "Backpfeifengesicht" for example. Now you know that, why not just steal it. Tell Reformers it's an anagram.

TimeForRishiByeByes · 30/06/2024 13:37

Tbh I'm a bit lost at what your saying to me.
So I'll leave you to it :-)
If your calling me a reformer - not a chance.

You don't really meet Reformers. More step in them.

That Andrew Bridgen leaflet - think he's having a breakdown in plain sight.

This is brilliant, a quick summary of everything that has gone wrong in the last 14 years in response to Annabel Denham’s column saying Keir Starmer will take away the few things we have left to take pleasure in https://x.com/i_iratus/status/1807189777189630004?s=61&t=xKCXjKa1-S6Ks0nSd_LXGg

You are both saying the same thing! Google translate the German - a perfectly acceptable way to about mentioning the N word and therefore bots/fans etc

Piggywaspushed · 30/06/2024 14:01

I doubt Tory politicians will be quick to condemn Tory students singing actual Nazi songs either. A the same time they are happy to vilify, mock and condemn the Palestine protestors and suggest those students are the anti Semitic ones and/or that anti Semitism is an exclusively Labour problem.

Annabel Denham of the Institute of Economic Affairs and contributor to the Spectator.

I think The Telegraph shares quite a bit in common with Andrew Bridgen these days. Their Opinion articles certainly show signs of a collective nervous breakdown.

Evenstar · 30/06/2024 14:10

I think the tone of some of the right wing media is nearing the hysteria of the McCarthy era in America with reds under the bed, better dead than red as they see their influence and privileged status seeping away.

Yep
His family sued him and no longer speak to him
He's a very strange man

There is also some end of days squawking on MN right now.

Notonthestairs · 30/06/2024 14:14

Agreed - I'd love to know whether that sort of language/rhetoric is persuasive. To me it just comes across as tantrum-y.

SerendipityJane · 30/06/2024 14:16

I look forward to the next government pointedly ignoring the rumours of Russian interference in this election.

Good for Lewis. Laura K swallowed it whole from Sunak this morning.

We need the Germans to whistle up a word for "the one who attracts a swift milkshake to the face when in public"

I have to say I went out with a man who literally had as his fb picture a knight in shining armour (one of those little models that were popular in tourist attractions in the early 90s). He had a saviour complex but was possibly the most selfish man I had ever met.

I wonder if they might be related as this guys family were divided over whether they spoke to him or not too! Must be something about the blinding lack of adaption one can do as the main character in the story of everyone else's life?

I don't think the UK has ever been under the illusion we weren't racist. Maybe for a glimmer around the time we hosted the Olympics but it was quite swiftly back to status quo thereafter. I think most of us remember the graffiti NF and how "unusual" it was to have a black newsreader such as the amazing Moira Stuart. I don't remember seeing many Asian faces or regional accents on mainstream TV or radio until around 2010's either...

Edit to add stark realisation that this may be why I had no idea dour was Scottish ergo probably pronounced to rhyme with door.

Trevor Phillips used to front "The London Programme" in the early 80s - possibly late 70s.

Yes, I agree there were signs of mild diversity, starting with men of course, but not full. It is now more mainstream to see but I do feel Asian faces (across the board) took a long time coming.
I was reading through from this morning when someone mentioned that we don't see ourselves as racist as a nation. I think most of us can feel it under the surface - I know I have been aware of it since I was a kid in 80s London and asked my mum what the NF all over the brickwork of the station was...

Anyone who knows me well will know my borderline obsession with definitions. Mainly because it's avoiding them that allows fascists (other extremists are available) to flourish.

Surely we all known that stinging shame of being told "well if you don't know ..." as a way of removing you, your views, your experience, your curiosity and your agency in a debate ? I've certainly known it. Especially when it's deliberate.

There is a world of difference between noticing that humans come in a staggering array of colours and trivial physical attributes and using them as a basis for society.

John Lloyd has a interesting way of dealing with questions about belief in God. "You tell me what you believe and I'll tell you why I don't". I believe it's called an ignostic,
