I'm finding it very hard to feel anything but growing contempt for Sunak.

His particular brand of smug, condescending politics really rankles me. I want him, personally, to get a real spanking in the election, I want him to lose his seat, I want him to be firmly rejected by the public, I want him gone. He's a man who has profited, handsomely, from the destruction of the country he professes to love. Fuck him and the horse he rode in on.

In the LBC interview linked on the last thread, I felt that Sunk came over mainly as very, very bored - I suspect that he was thinking of it as primarily a radio interview and forgot that LBC also films them. On the foodbank question he was clearly just churning out a reply he had learnt by heart, hence his talking over Ferrari when he tried to ask connected questions, because he simply couldn't answer them.

prettybird · 20/06/2024 10:54

I'm torn between wanting the schadenfreude Portillo moment of seeing Sunak sunk lose his seat and the schadenfreude of him him winning it by a handful of votes and being forced to commit to another full 5 years as an MP (he has after all committed to serving a full term and after all, we all know that politicians never lie Wink).

A sort of Schrödinger's Declaration Grin

It is I, Fabio12.

Dog tax - she's not actually managed to get her paws on a sweet, but she was demonstrating her ability to unwrap one if she did.

She's constantly on top of me today (poor health) showing love in a warm but slightly crushing "I must stand on you and be super close!" kind of way.

It is I, Fabio12
🤣
I'm getting to the age where I'm sad about all these cultural references that our kids don't get.

Tony Lee, Director of the Tory Election Campaign, took leave of absence yesterday. As you do, when you work for a major political party and are two weeks off an election which is literally all that you are employed to focus on.

Mind you, his wife's gambling activities might have had something to do with it.

The thing is because the Prime Miniature called a snap general election, it is really little surprise that people may have holidays to Sardinia booked during them, completely to be expected. And if someone is paying for your holiday, you can't be expected to cancel and do some work.
How was Tony Lee supposed to know the election was in July, until Sunak did his thing in the rain?

Sunk Rish! does always seem to sound bored when he speaks, you would have thought his expensive education might have taught him how to sound interested, but perhaps one learns that with Sky TV?

MissMarplesNiece · 20/06/2024 10:59

@NoDishiForRishi Whereas I want as many Tories as possible to lose their seats it would suit Sunak's agenda very well to lose his - he can jet off to California without a backward look at the catastrophe this country has become. I'd like him to keep his so that he doesn't really get it all his own way.

tobee · 20/06/2024 10:59

Everyone seems coached to nth degree in this election. Some by better coaches than others.

The trouble is those that can riff in interviews haven't been shown to be trustworthy in recent times.

But surely there's some kind of happy medium? Just being a bit more natural.

Sunak is off, come what may.

However it would be nice for his departure to prove another lie he told - in the same vein as Dave "I will stick around" Cameron in 2016.

How quickly would Sunak have to resign to beat Daves record ?

tobee · 20/06/2024 11:01

"- he can jet off to California without a backward look at the catastrophe"

But will he whistle?

SerendipityJane · 20/06/2024 11:03

Or - just an idea - tell the fucking truth. That way you don't need to remember what lie you told last week.

tobee · 20/06/2024 11:06

Just flicking about on bbc iPlayer and found that they have 355 minutes of Election 97 coverage on BBC parliament channel. Photo of a young looking Peter Snow, David Dimbleby and Jeremy Paxman. If anyone's interested.

I've seen a few of these before. I think there was even one from the 1950s.

Ooh they've got loads if you search Election in the search function. 1955, 1959, 1966, 1970, 1979 as well.

Fun for nerds everywhere

I know. It'll never catch on.

Piggywaspushed · 20/06/2024 11:38

OMG . I love Deacon Blue and I got to today years old thinking they were 'slipping down rapids and reading Maynard Keynes'.

Shameful.

MissMarplesNiece · 20/06/2024 11:39

So 3 people have been accused of using insider knowledge to bet on the date of the GE. One of them, a police officer has been arrested, the other two, Tory candidates haven't been arrested or even suspended by the Tory party. Is is just me thinking one rule for one, another more lenient rule for the other two?

Notonthestairs · 20/06/2024 11:40

Solid suggestions here from Institute for Government - let's hope somebody is reading them!

Central government’s over-reliance on competitive bidding to fund local and combined authorities is not working for anyone and inhibits local growth.

Our report warns that the next government must end "begging bowl culture" of local growth funding

To be fair, sometimes he varies it with tetchy, and other times he gets quite animated in a "Look how clever I am" sort of way.

That would require them to believe using insider's information for financial gain is a bad thing.

After the excitement of Rish! exercising his reverse midas at every opportunity for the first two weeks of the election campaign, nothing happened last week.

Is anything going to happen in the next two weeks, or are we going to have to entertain ourselves?

Spoke too soon @Thingscanonlygetsunk

Possibly the betting scandal? They’ve now deleted this ad.

Edited

But it is not news that the current Tories are in it to make themselves as much money as possible, and sod the law and the country.

Blimey, that’s a bit radical. We wouldn’t believe them anyway.
