I find it really hard to believe that someone who has been through Winchester College would be unaware of the significance of commemorating those who sacrificed their lives so we could be free.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_College_War_Cloister

I wasn’t referring to his DDay behaviour - I was referring to his general behaviour.

Thsi really annoyed me as he literally isn't running the country. He is campaigning. Parliament isn't sitting. Barring emergencies, there is no business to attend to.

I presume she said this before she knew he came home to film something for ITV??

Was he running the country before the election was called?
I can't say I had noticed. What were the key policies he was implementing?

Did he go to Winchester ? If I were them I'd keep that very quiet. He's not really a great advert.

Which will alert the people who weren't aware it happened, that it happened.

These were my thoughts exactly! Most news channels studiously avoided pointing out he wasn't there for much of yesterday!

Could it be that he and his advisors think it is preferable for us all to be talking about how Sunak doesn't care about veterans than that Sunak lied repeatedly in the debate earlier in the week?

Agree with Itsgettingweird - Littledrummergirl1 sums it up regarding D-Day.

I am angrier this morning than I was last night.

And I would say that if Starmer or Davey had left early. Particularly because Sunak didnt leave for pressing practical reasons (emergency in the UK) but for political reasons (record an interview for release next week).

It was a World War. We commemorate all those that put their lives on the line.

Anyone suggesting Sunak is busier than Biden, Macron or Scholtz can get in the damn bin.

No surprises that my newspaper (Times) has skipped over this. Complicit twats.

It's top story on the BBC now. Which must really be cheering their genuine journalists up.

I wasn’t referring to his DDay behaviour - I was referring to his general behaviour.

On re-reading, I completely get what you are saying. There are many successful people I have met who are like that, one notable exception being Bill Clinton who always gave the impression in taking a genuine interest in you.

It wasn't on here that someone posted about being involved in the count after elections, was it?

I've just started a thread in GE 2024 to ask what happens with spoiled papers because I've seen so many people say that the candidates have to read what messages you write on your paper. I'm sure that's rubbish.

Someone on a feminist thread has said they have stickers made saying something about trans and put those on their ballot paper.

I was hoping for some response on my thread so I can link it to people who believe they're making a great statement

The stickers bit made me laugh more that it should but it is so MN.

If you want to spoil your ballot, at least do it properly.

Times tip toeing around it.

Although Tim Montgomery (ex Conservative Home) on Newsnight has a similar take to my own - that's before we understood that Sunak didn't want to attend the commemoration at all.

I can't deal with much more of this, the contempt that the grabby chancers of politics have for the electorate is always there but usually care is taken to, mostly, hide it. Please let this GE see the buggers off for a few years. Meanwhile, here's some cheerful flowers, I've run out of pets, both owned and loaned. Many thanks for the shiny new Thread of Sanity.

I wonder if this is Sunaks "bigotgate" moment ? It simply may not go back in the box now.

It also, weirdly does resonate with Trumps dislike of veterans too.

I guess if you wanted to protect yourself from a military coup, then quietly reducing the military would be the way to do it. Once again, history tells us this.

"I wonder if this is Sunaks "bigotgate" moment ? It simply may not go back in the box now."

It shouldn't.
I'm genuinely dumbfounded he needed to be persuaded by the French government to attend at all.

That would be an odd position for them to take. People don't care as much about the lie because they think all politicians lie anyway.

Plus last week he wasn't planning on going AT ALL, so unless he was planning ahead his distraction from a lie he hadn't yet told..

He is of course free to call the French liars. (As indeed are our own press).

In a way I would love for him and them do actually do that.

But I note they haven't. And I bet our poodle press won't ask them "So, Mr. Sunak are you claiming the French government is lying ?".

Notonthestairs · 07/06/2024 10:01

Well they are going to have to come up with something.

Mordaunt is on tv later and if they think Farage won't mention all of this they'd be wrong (again).

She'll need to deploy her "I can confirm Sunak wasn't hiding under a table" tone.

pointythings · 07/06/2024 10:03

There's a thread on the Sunak departure in GE now, and someone we know is on there basically stating that Sunak is more British than the rest of us because he's paid so much tax. I can't even.

Morduant would have fought them, again, and again and again.

Just wanted to say - my favourite tax pic yet! SaltBlossom

No words of wisdom today, other than I am so, so weary of giving headspace to these lying, cheating, gaslighting, disrespectful c*nts - and even though I'm a sweary fecker that's a word I hate to use.

I really think that one should just be ignored.

Sunak strikes me as very precocious child, who has never really been told no so cushioned by wealth & privilege that his needs & wants trump everything which breeds breathtaking arrogance combined with utter belief that he is always right, hence the shouty petulance when challenged.

My paternal gf was on the beaches. Well, on a transport.
In his own words..."I never even got my bloody feet wet!".
The shrapnel eventually killed him some years later.

Same with my uncle. He was the only one of 5 post WW1 siblings not to reach 90 despite growing up in absolute poverty. They were a tough breed.

dontcallmelen · 07/06/2024 10:42

Oh & Kuessenberg hopefully will be relegated to reporting the U10 football results once the conservatives are shown the door.
