He's just so bad at politics. Any idiot could see that leaving the D-Day commemorations would go down badly, not to mention the opportunity for Starmer to be shown in all the pictures. Who is advising him? Is he being advised by people who want to lose Tory votes to reform?

user8800 · 07/06/2024 08:39

Labour have always been held to a higher standard of behaviour.

Always.

It's genuinely baffling.

Notonthestairs · 07/06/2024 08:31

It is a privilege to represent this country - particularly at those events. It is opportunity handed to very few people.

I expect them to put their politics aside for that time and on our behalf acknowledge the debt.

There was a thread on MN a few of years ago with people outlining their grandparents (and a few parents) experiences of WW2. Stories from all over the world. I thought it was very moving. And a reminder of the responsibilities we have to our armed forces and young people.

A late tweeted apology doesn't cut it.

More to the point, campaigning was halted yesterday which cleared all their diaries to stay for as long as it took.

user8800 · 07/06/2024 08:42

My paternal gf was on the beaches. Well, on a transport.
In his own words..."I never even got my bloody feet wet!".
The shrapnel eventually killed him some years later.

Evenstar · 07/06/2024 08:45

I don’t think any of us were excusing him, and I certainly don’t think he is neuro diverse. I have a son with autism who would never have done what Sunak did yesterday. My son is kind and empathetic and although he sometimes finds social situations tricky and doesn’t always say the right thing he is always trying his best and that shines through.

Sunak for whatever reason showed no understanding of the importance of yesterday’s commemoration and an apology today doesn’t alter his unforgivably offensive behaviour. I think that this will prove to be a turning point.

DuncinToffee · 07/06/2024 08:49

He has Kuenssberg on Newscast defending him

"With prime ministers duty calls all the time and sometimes the duty isn't world leader stuff..."

"Prime ministers are trying to run the country as well as an election campaign, that's a challenge [Starmer] doesn't have"

He could eat a kitten and she would defend him.

Labtastic · 07/06/2024 08:54

At this point I can only assume he's doing it on purpose to make sure he doesn't get accidentally re-elected. I mean, it's just not possible to be this stupid, surely.

Notonthestairs · 07/06/2024 08:55

Fucking hell Laura. What are Biden, Macron and Scholz? Chopped liver?
I mean honestly.

Like user8800 (and countless other MNers) I had a grandparent at D-day.

If Sunak didn't want the chance to be there, I would have gone and treated it as the privilege it is.

Right. i'll get off my soap box.

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2024 08:04

Sunak has now apologised for leaving early...

Which will alert the people who weren't aware it happened, that it happened.

And really, saying sorry in a case like this which is genuinely unrepeatable (and I hear sadly one veteran died on the way) just can't ever be enough.

This act alone should be something that he get battered with at the start of every interview. He should be from nowonin be introduced as "the Prime Minister who left the D-Day remembrance to do an ITV interview".

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2024 08:55

Zonder · 07/06/2024 08:53

Thsi really annoyed me as he literally isn't running the country. He is campaigning. Parliament isn't sitting. Barring emergencies, there is no business to attend to.

I presume she said this before she knew he came home to film something for ITV??

Labtastic · 07/06/2024 08:56

And now it turns out that, until a week ago, he wasn't expected to attend AT ALL!

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2024 08:56

Which will alert the people who weren't aware it happened, that it happened.

These were my thoughts exactly! Most news channels studiously avoided pointing out he wasn't there for much of yesterday!

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2024 08:57

I'm a pacifist (as is Stephen Flynn who was there) and even I think a PM should attend every last second of this solemn occasion.

Labtastic · 07/06/2024 08:56

What? Is this true?

Labtastic · 07/06/2024 08:56

Indeed. It's bonkers. How could he have even not considered this to be non negotiable.

Adam Bienkov tweets
"So it turns out Rishi Sunak originally refused to go to the D-Day commemorations at all and only agreed to go for part of it, in a "compromise" with the French."

SerendipityJane · 07/06/2024 09:00

Zonder · 07/06/2024 07:44

It wasn't on here that someone posted about being involved in the count after elections, was it?

I've just started a thread in GE 2024 to ask what happens with spoiled papers because I've seen so many people say that the candidates have to read what messages you write on your paper. I'm sure that's rubbish.

Someone on a feminist thread has said they have stickers made saying something about trans and put those on their ballot paper.

I was hoping for some response on my thread so I can link it to people who believe they're making a great statement

No direct experience, but I've often read that the "spoiled" slip do get reviewed by all candidates in case one can be considered a vote.

There was the issue a few election back where a cock'n'balls drawn in the box was accepted as a valid vote when the candidates agent appealed it.

Adam Bienkov tweets
"So it turns out Rishi Sunak originally refused to go to the D-Day commemorations at all and only agreed to go for part of it, in a "compromise" with the French."

The second bit of that tweet says, "The message to Paris from his team was that he would be too busy campaigning in the general election to make the trip."

WTAF??!

SerendipityJane · 07/06/2024 09:01

I refer people back to my snippet of Kipling previously.

Notonthestairs · 07/06/2024 09:01

The French government had to twist his arm to attend AT ALL.

What the fuck am I reading.

Thingscanonlygetsunk · 07/06/2024 09:02

Notonthestairs · 07/06/2024 08:05

Agree with Itsgettingweird - Littledrummergirl1 sums it up regarding D-Day.

I am angrier this morning than I was last night.

And I would say that if Starmer or Davey had left early. Particularly because Sunak didnt leave for pressing practical reasons (emergency in the UK) but for political reasons (record an interview for release next week).

It was a World War. We commemorate all those that put their lives on the line.

Anyone suggesting Sunak is busier than Biden, Macron or Scholtz can get in the damn bin.

No surprises that my newspaper (Times) has skipped over this. Complicit twats.

Imagine if it had been But Jeremy Corbyn...

Possibly a cultural element to Sunak as well, I work with a lot of men from a similar culture / background and come across some who have such complete confidence in themselves that they don’t have a conversation with you but at you and cannot cope with even a question. Asking a question results in a how very dare you tetchy answer and they go into defence mode of doubling down & refusing to listen.

I find it really hard to believe that someone who has been through Winchester College would be unaware of the significance of commemorating those who sacrificed their lives so we could be free.

I've counted before nothing really happens to the spoiled papers. You just think 'ugh, a spoiled paper' and chuck it in the spoiled paper pile.

The candidates/agents can review them if they want to, and if any mark is just in one box next to a candidate they can argue that it's a vote for that person. So don't put your protest just in one box or it could end up as a vote.

To be honest though, it's a waste of time, nobody really pays much attention to them.
