The problem with designing a loophole friendly tax regime for your mates, is that it ends up so byzantine it becomes almost impossible to deliver a meaningful "tax" cut through it anymore.

TL;DR is that a system designed to extract the absolute maximum from the majority makes it impossible to reverse the polarity and return anything meaningful.

If you can imagine that scene in Downfall where it finally dawns on the big H that he hasn't any resources left anywhere to deploy, but done in an accountants office

I see Reform bots have started to pop up. MN zapped one of them this morning.

For some reason, recent Tory campaigning has reminded me of the origin of the phrase "laconic". I am sure Boris would be happy to explain that to Rish!

Appealing to innate selfishness isn’t going to work any more now people can see the appalling deficits in public services every single day. I hope.

I’d like 1p in the pound NI for absolutely everybody though. Was it Lib Dem or Labour who suggested that a while back, I forget?

That was LD under Charles Kennedy. I liked it as a policy too.

HelloMist · 11/06/2024 10:34

They are launching their manifesto from Silverstone today. 😂

Brilliant - so many anti semitic tropes being trotted out. I do think HQ need educating.

How odd. That’s what the remnants of Momentum said …

Bigcoatlady · 11/06/2024 11:57

I wondered that @user8800 but I think the rationale will be he's changed the Labour Party including booting Corbyn out. Ergo they are now launching a fully costed manifesto.

The Tories can say 'oh look you contributed to that bad manifesto' but then the Labour line is 'yup but we've changed' which is something they want to keep front and centre. And they can add 'you agree your manifesto is full of last minute uncosted pledges then?' which is going to be their main attack line.

If the Tories are stupid enough to fall into this bear trap it means the main take aways for anyone not interested in politics are 'Labour has changed' and 'Tory manifesto uncosted' and they don't get any publicity for whatever is in there.

If they have any sense they say nothing and keep shouting about whatever is in there they want to shout about like reducing NI and protecting pensions. But they don't have any sense so expect 24hrs of 'but Jeremy Corbyn...'

user8800 · 11/06/2024 12:00

I'm not a moment fan but it makes him look foolish imo

"Ben Houchen, Mayor of Teeside says that the alternative to another Conservative government will be “armageddon.”"

Sorry but this bit of hyperbole made me laugh.

Armageddon.
Only the Conservatives can govern - and slice another £12 billion off public services.

Well in a personal sense Houchen may be right, when a proper investigation is launch into his fraudulent dealings.

DuncinToffee · 11/06/2024 12:10

Didn't reform at some point use Starmergeddon, maybe Houchen got confused

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 11/06/2024 12:13

Houchen was an odd choice to introduce the PM and the manifesto.

He disassociated himself entirely from the Conservatives during the mayoral elections.
Kept Ministers and Sunak away from campaigning in his area.
Didn't mention Sunak in his thank you speech.
Didn't even wear a blue rosette.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Fartage has pulled out of the BBC Panorama interview over the Hitler comments row.

That must have really hurt. He’s such a publicity whore usually.

DuncinToffee · 11/06/2024 12:18

They have put mandatory national service in the manifesto,

"It’s only right that young people are given the opportunity to serve it with pride."

Well if you know you're never going to have to enact them, you can put any old shit policies in can't you ?

Tom Peck

Well here we are at Silverstone for the Tory Manifesto launch. Yesterday, the Lib Dems laid on fruit, pastries, cappuccinos and a large plate of custard creams.

Here, one vat of filter coffee and not so much as a single biscuit.

Good. That might make sure parents and newly minted 18 year olds don't vote for them.

That's an absolute gift to Labour.
