Their names will be taken. They will be traced. They will be re-educated.

That made me giggle not sure might be fear that it could or probably does happen already.

What happens in China comes to us all.

Why do you think the right wing has such a massive hard on for social media ? It's Stasi on the cheap (0 stars, on Tripadviser).

dontcallmelen · 08/06/2024 18:39

You could well be right Serendipity I know I’m naïve in some of musings & probably quite simplistic in many of my contributions.

Evenstar · 08/06/2024 18:52

Just seeing Ed Davey on Channel 4, Lib Dem’s going big on green issues today, compared to Tories bringing up ULEZ again and sewage issues. I think that will play well in Blue Wall seats.

Just to give a bit of hope, there are still good people in this world, I have just come in from seeing the Dave Day ride in memory of Dave Myers the Hairy Biker passing on the motorway. The bridges over the motorway were packed with people waving and cheering them on, the bikers were waving and blowing their horns and had Hawaiian shirts and flags, lorry drivers and motorists were joining in blowing their horns and flashing their lights.

Despite what the Tories have done to divide the country with Brexit and culture wars, we still want to come together even for someone we didn’t know personally. We mustn’t lose sight of that.

I'm seeing the Best of a British currently as I live right by all the d day events.

Just the sight of the red arrows makes me feel all patriotic!

And the airfield has an amazing event. Ds works right next door but seeing it as it is this week 🥰

@Notonthestairs 😮 surely they will be thrown out of the party, I don’t know if they can change parties once the papers have gone in

tobee · 08/06/2024 19:22

SerendipityJane · 08/06/2024 16:32

But have you ever met a nice South African ?

It’s weird for me that I have to explain to my dc (in their 20s) about the very recent history of South Africa. They know about Mandela of course. But not being alive during the atrocities of the white South African governments, police etc. featured on the news regularly.

I’m still proud I was one the founders of my local anti apartheid group!

Notonthestairs · 08/06/2024 19:24

Certainly doesn't say much for party discipline.

Evenstar · 08/06/2024 19:47

I wonder if more may follow, they know they are going to lose their seats in many cases so probably feel they might as well pocket some money and line themselves up with the hard right rump that may survive the election.

DuncinToffee · 08/06/2024 19:50

Not sure if Sunak can do anything after accepting more Hester donations

I really hope after the election we can return to some normality, I can’t think of a precedent for this lurch to the extreme right and the bizarre events that have unfolded due to that and Brexit.

Notonthestairs · 08/06/2024 20:34

No paywall for the Times this weekend -

A typically riveting @ShippersUnbound piece on the D-Day debacle, includes a jaw dropper: royal aides have let it be known Buckingham Palace is furious about it all.

Normalcy

mibbelucieachwell · 08/06/2024 20:45

This lurch to the extreme right is very concerning isn't it @Evenstar ? Socialism used to be considered a respectable political philosophy even by people who disagreed with it. Equally, I used to defend the conservatives I knew as good, responsible, hard-working, honest, kind people who just didn't have enough understanding of why people make poor choices to realise that not all able- bodied people can reasonably be expected to manage without significant help from the state.

Now socialism, in the old sense of nationalised infrastructure and services run for the good of the whole population instead of to make profit for a few people seems to be seen as an extreme, reckless ideology.

Evenstar · 08/06/2024 20:52

Yes it is very concerning and unfortunately across the world we have politicians who seek to stoke division and espouse more extreme ideas. I would never have envisaged that a British Prime Minister would contemplate leaving the EHCR.

I knew many Conservatives who were decent people who did a lot for their communities and for charity, MP’s who were their representatives were purged from the party by Boris Johnson to “Get Brexit Done” ☹️

Heavenssakes · 08/06/2024 21:06

The extreme right is on the rise, here and internationally, and unfortunately, isn't going to fade away after the election.
Right now, Reform (and others) are doing a job we may be viewing as 'useful', splitting the right wing vote, thus aiding the downfall of the Conservative Party.

But after the election?
There's an international far right surge, aided by Russian/Chinese/American hard right money, seeking a different world order, in which they , not Western democracies, are in the ascendant.
(Yes, I realise by using the phrase 'World Order' I sound like a conspiracy theorist, but that's absolutely not where I'm coming from)

The logical next step is the takeover of the Tory Party, resulting in a political environment in the uk where you're either left, or you're pretty far right. See conservative right in Canada: swallowed up by a party called.. Reform.

And the Reform party in Uk has zero pretence of democracy- it's owned by one man-(and his paymasters).

This election night will be enjoyable: but, the shadow on the right is a long one, and a dark one.

My old local councillor was a prime example of the people we want on our side and in our corner.

He was also my sociology lecturer at uni!

He was Tory.

Easy to vote for him because he made real change. He listened and acted. He fought for public services harder than anyone I've ever known.

Complete opposite to Braverman who is the MP for my town.

Yes, I think the moment the conservatives finally lost their way and descended into this spiral of destructiveness and corruption (well, more corruption) was when they didn't pick Rory Stewart as their leader and lost him as an MP. That was a huge mistake IMO.
