Interesting.

Former chief executive of BP, has called for an end to new drilling licences in the North Sea, in an implicit endorsement of the Labour party’s position on fossil fuels.

Cross bench peer. Says the current licensing agreements should continue but no more granted. In line with what Starmer/Miliband policy.

I suspect Sunak's miscalculation is that he thought snubbing the French, in France would go down well with those who get over excited about his stop the boats rhetoric. He didn't realise it would be taken as a snub to the entire nation, even those who hate foreigners.

In which case he is more of a fucking idiot than I previously thought.

regulars will be aware I have a sharp tongue. But even I would hesitate before even dreaming of taking on une gen Francais in the snubbing stakes.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 07/06/2024 16:04

He's just awful. His 'apology' makes it very clear that he's not sorry at all.

Evenstar · 07/06/2024 16:06

Tory candidate for Hemel Hempsted suspended from the party after refusing to stand down after a complaint with a photograph was received. New candidate installed less than an hour before deadline.

Mytholmroyd · 07/06/2024 16:08

The biggest British Army garrison at Catterick (12k voters there alone) and RAF Leeming are in the Richmondshire constituency - even if he didn't care about his standing on the world stage you'd think he might be concerned about the people who might vote for him. The army is a big deal around here.

As a constituent of his I am shocked at the disrespect to them and the rest of the allies - how could he have been so disrespectful?

He should resign and for God's sake don't put the twat in the HoL.

He made a point during his non-apology that he'd attended all the British events for British veterans. Just those unimportant foreign ones he skipped out on. It's our allies and their veterans who can go fuck themselves.

I hadn’t even thought of that but you’re right. He doesn’t need to resign, he’ll be kicked out on 6 July. Whoever said this is the equivalent of Brown’s bigoted woman moment is spot on.

@Mytholmroyd I lived in a heavily military constituency till recently, I actually think there are many constituencies that will turn against them after this. Penny Mordaunt in Portsmouth and Johnny Mercer in Plymouth which are naval towns will probably lose votes too.

As a close observer of all things tory I am afraid I am not really shocked. And believe you me this isn't the lowest they can or will go yet.

Mordaunt has the perfect opportunity to shore her votes up by condemning him tonight. I hope she does.

I was wondering this. Or if he's worrying about some optics we can't see of being photographed with EU leaders.

Cameron already well recognised as a Remainer, so far safer for him to do it.

I really wish I didn't have this bad habit of trying to understand his position. I can't quite believe he would actually be so stupid so I think there must be some other explanation.

Fucking Brexshit

CassieMaddox · 07/06/2024 16:20

Or maybe Sunak wants Reform to be in opposition

Well no, I agree, but this is just jaw dropping - there's no excuse or anywhere to hide. It should have been in the diary years ago. I can't understand it. Why? Why would you not feel honoured to represent your country at such an event whatever your politics?

I have never voted for him but I don't feel any glee about it - just huge shame and embarrassment that the British PM would do this. He cannot clearly be trusted to make the right decisions.

I hope we vote him out - we have a Labour mayor now - have been telling my children to tell all their friends to get out and vote!

BIossomtoes · 07/06/2024 16:22

I think he definitely wants to lose the election. He’s basically just thrown it beyond all possible doubt.

prettybird · 07/06/2024 16:25

"How to say you don't want to be PM without saying you don't want to be PM" Wink

DuncinToffee · 07/06/2024 16:31

The next campaign stop for the PM, after apologising for leaving D-Day commemoration events early, is a school on this street

Sunak has made the international headlines

https://x.com/AlexTaylorNews/status/1799029187443052687

Sunak's apology is already absolutely all over the press in both Europe & US

It goes to the very heart of Brexit's token nationalism. Taking part in a UK ceremony, but not bothering with the main international "foreign" event

Brexit is the very opposite of what made Britain great

Honestly this can't be real 🙈

I've been catching up on this thread and all I can add is 😮😲😯

BIossomtoes · 07/06/2024 16:57

The Mirror was so busy salivating over his misdemeanours that it failed to answer the question I really wanted answered which is whether the Tories have found a substitute candidate for that seat. Does anyone know?

Mytholmroyd · 07/06/2024 17:00

No I haven't heard - I wasn't expecting him to stand given the short notice of calling the election - I expect him to ship out to California tbh.
