Oh! Ds is very keen on a UK written constitution. He wrote a thesis on it.

40 years ago, so was I.

But team Trump have shown that it's about as much use as our unwritten one. Possibly worse in a way - the word ossified isn't enough in politics.

Grand ideas don't last too long in politics. They are too easy to chip away at over time.

What we could use is a much more brief enumeration of the relationship between state and citizen (not subjects as we are now ...). Basically a magna carta for bumper stickers.

The UK is just....broken.

Even ' about the same' is a depressing answer for some of those things if we assume they weren't all that good before...

It’s pretty obvious that anyone who thinks the NHS is about the same as in 2010 either didn’t use it before that, hasn’t used it recently or both.

user8800 · 06/06/2024 11:35

I worked in the nhs in the mid 2000s.
I also gave birth twice in the 2000s.
You phoned an ambulance back then and waited about 7 minutes.
Now...you're told to drive your very sick relative/friend to hospital yourself as its an 8 hour wait for a suspected stroke.
anyone saying that the nhs is not worse simply hasn't had to use it like my pils

Indeed.

I was specifically thinking about racism.

There is no way we shouldn't continue to be on a forward trajectory in terms of equality and if things are the same for any people from any ethnic group as they were thta in itself is troubling. If they are worse, even more so. I'd really like to see that answer broken down but respondents'' ethnicities.

The Equality Act was 2010. Things bloody well should be better by law!

user8800 · 06/06/2024 11:48

The maternity report into the experiences of WOC was so shocking to read.

Racism is SO ingrained, just like misogyny :(

Yep :(

Struggling with Sunak’s hypocrisy, he is apparently coming home before the international commemoration event as well. Disrespectful and unstatesmanlike

Actually it's refreshingly honest. It's not like he has any respect for anyone anyway. So a big "fuck you" is probably the most sincere thing he has done so far in the campaign.

Its an odd campaign decision. The sitting PM has the distinct advantage that he can legitimately go to these things represent the UK on the world stage and get positive new coverage just by being their and appearing with other world leaders.

Is he self sabotaging again?

But why on earth would he ? He couldn't give a flying fuck about veterans. Has fuck all interest in how the UK is perceived around the world. Can't stand tradition and ceremony, and hates the Tory party.

Why on earth would a person like that expend anything more than the bare minimum (and that grudgingly) on anything to do with being Prime Minister ?

Or am I the only one that has noticed ?

Piggywaspushed · 06/06/2024 12:24

Campaigning is suspended today, too, so he doesn't even have any need to come home.

The Sunaks are already planning their US escape

No more money to plunder from the UK

DuncinToffee · 06/06/2024 12:29

Another one, Sam Trask

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/tory-election-candidate-quits-after-32972622

A Tory candidate in key battleground seat has quit the election race after being exposed for making lurid sexual comments about women.

Already planning ?

I will wager it was planned years ago. I can't see Mrs Sunak putting up with being treated as if she was the UK.

Champagne in the fridge ready for the Californian return I reckon.
he really is the total embodiment of what is so wrong with many of our elected representatives, no sense of dutyHistory/respect …..

IClaudine · 06/06/2024 13:04

We're going to need a new fred soon!

My suggestion Sunak: Spinner of Lies.

Or:

Sunak : Suitcases at the Ready! (But that may be better for election night).

Evenstar · 06/06/2024 13:18

DD and I were saying earlier that from a campaign point of view it’s quite a strange decision to leave Keir Starmer to show respect to the veterans, which plays well with many core Tory voters and to have the opportunity to network with international leaders.

If he is hoping to return to America, the optics look just as bad as he hasn’t met the President or shown respect to the American veterans.

SerendipityJane · 06/06/2024 13:18

Champagne in the fridge ready for the Californian return I reckon.

Fun fact of the day. "Champagne" is a protected name in the Treaty of Versailles, which is why it can't be used in the UK.

The US never signed the treaty of Versailles, so can call Californian sparkling white white "Champagne" without any comeback.

(Mind you, the French wine industry owes it's existence to the US, so it seems a fair deal. And Champagne was invented in England anyway),

DuncinToffee · 06/06/2024 13:20

There is a thread in the GE board called Sunak stupid or bare faced liar.

I thought someone already started a new thread, as did prettybird Grin

Sunak: Economical with the Truth

SerendipityJane · 06/06/2024 13:24

it’s quite a strange decision to leave Keir Starmer to show respect to the veterans,

Is it ? Veterans that were exclusively working class and pulled from poverty ?

Makes perfect sense to me. As does Sunaks contempt. It's all in Kipling

I went into a public 'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins," when the band begins to play
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins," when the band begins to play.
