More information on the Rwanda report

https://x.com/matt_dathan/status/1795788317843157320

There's a particularly damning report out today by the @CommonsPAC on the government's Rwanda scheme and asylum accommodation:

  • Rishi Sunak's efforts to end the use of hotels have cost the taxpayer £46 million more than if the @ukhomeoffice had simply retained the use of hotels
  • This is because "unacceptable and avoidable mistakes" had led to a failure to protect value for money.
  • Home Office estimated it would cost just £10m to set up asylum accommodation at the former military sites at Wethersfield and Scampton when in fact costs spiralled to £76m.
  • The committee said it has "little confidence" in the Home Office's ability to implement the Rwanda scheme as it has no "credible plan" to do so.
  • Also says it has "little confidence" in the Home Office's understanding of the costs of the scheme, particularly given its poor track record in delivering other major projects.

Bloody hell.
Horrendous mismanagement.

Policies developed to outflank Farage - unsuccessfully because you can't out lie a dirty great Liar - and which leave the taxpayer paying £££££.

Unfortunately this will probably be drowned out by electioneering twaddle today.

It deserves wall to wall coverage.

Farage on QT. Too frit to stand as an MP.
Not leading a party. Spending this year in the US 🇺🇸.
Why platform him AGAIN?

Just to be clear that's not AI, just a word cloud.

They are everywhere at the moment! It's like everyone suddenly remembered them from Uni or something?

Not sure it's a ringing endorsement but you can see which of the two is worse quite quickly.

I said that last night when they gave him airtime on BBC and Ch4 News. Why indulge him? His only ‘power’ is being interviewed and amplified by the media. He adds nothing, he is nothing in a camel coat holding a fucking pint.

I think it's worth bearing in mind that outside of his coterie, Farage isn't actually very popular.

There is a reason he managed to fail to be elected seven times.

And to be quite frank, the problem with QT isn't Farage who is a symptom of the problem. It was never the same when Robin Day stood down.

newnamethanks · 29/05/2024 16:45

Completely agree about Farage. Why is he there? To promote right wing pro Trump guff, just what we need. And, given the costs above re asylum seekers/Rwanda, these policies have been put into practice by the people who constantly refer to Labour's financial incompetence. I despair. I saw a couple on news a day or so ago. On their way to a food bank, clients not helpers 'Yes, Rishi's done a lot for us, we'll be voting for him'😩

Also

If the Home Office carries out the Public Accounts Committee's recommendation, it would mean releasing all financial assessments on the Rwanda plan and various asylum, small boat and accommodation policies days before the general election

Oh my dear sweet Goddess that would be AMAZING!!!

Doesn't the twat realise that basically he's telling us that travelling by train is an excitingly quaint novelty for him and his family?

I think he went by sleeper and tbf I’d probably take photos the first time I went. But I don’t have an image problem that involves being seen as out of touch and only taking helicopters everywhere.

RafaistheKingofClay · 29/05/2024 17:17

I bet he didn’t share with a random member of the public.

the80sweregreat · 29/05/2024 17:23

To be fair , he probably couldn't share accommodation because of security. His still the PM.
I bet many didn't even realize he was on that train. A bit like the time Kate and William flew budget airlines one year on holiday smuggled on and off!

EXCL: HMRC has confirmed that Angela Rayner owes no capital gains tax for sale of former council house & that no further action will be taken, according to document seen by me @guardian 👇🏼

Zonder · 29/05/2024 19:03

Yay for Angela Rayner!

Bloody Farage. He's such a failure and yet they give him oxygen.
