Yes I wondered who briefed them too.
I'm not the biggest fan of Streeting but he genuinely seemed surprised about the announcement and had a differing understanding of the situation than reported. And I felt sorry for him that the journalists wouldn't accept that because they didn't like the answer.
I feel sorry for any politician in that situation.
That's why I hated Morgan during covid. Even when his questions were answered he wasn't happy unless they were answered with the answer being what he felt should happen.
I get most politicians skirt an issue. But sometimes they can answer and will.
It happened the other week with Starmer on R4. He was honest his pledges are changing due to finances changing and having to prioritise. He said in an ideal world he'd do them all straight off. It was very clear and I felt the question was answered. But the next 5 minutes were a repeat of "so why aren't you doing x" and "would you do x if finances allowed".
I wanted to scream at the radio "we've had that answer - I'd like to hear more challenge and answers to different questions"
No wonder the media is often a negative catalyst to incorrect news. It appears some journalists aren't clever enough to adjust their questions or think of new questions when they get answers. Although I accept actually getting a straight answer to a straight question is probably not something they've learned to deal with!
Rant over!
