I do hope the national service issue comes up on Tuesday. It'll be fascinating to watch Sunak blustering and squirming his way around that one.

And his justification for age related preferential tax treatment.

Naturally I am delighted to have the Labour Whip restored and to be a member of the PLP.
Thank you to all those who supported me along the way.
I will be campaigning for a Labour victory.
But I am very dismayed that numerous reports suggest I have been barred as a candidate.

🍿 Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer will go head-to-head on ITV on Tuesday

Bugger I've got to go and top up mum's pivotell before we go on holiday that night. 2 hour round trip and 90 mins of conversation on a 15 minute loop. At least her alzheimers means she doesn't appear to have registered there is an election. Which is good because every time Sinak comes on TV she's surprised because she has forgotten Johnson isn't PM any more. And she's still entitled to vote.

IClaudine · 29/05/2024 10:15

This from Peston re: DA:

Diane Abbott received a private letter from the Labour Chief Whip yesterday telling her that she was back in the parliamentary party, as @AnushkaAsthana revealed. Abbott believed that would be the precursor to her own announcement that she would be retiring, to be accompanied by a flurry of tributes for her service from Starmer and others. That elegant departure had been under negotiation for weeks I am told - which is why she felt badly let down when the Times was briefed that she had been banned from running in this election. All she wanted, I understand, was the dignity of being able to say she was choosing to stand down. This looks like a mess that could have been avoided

BIossomtoes · 29/05/2024 10:19

Thanks @IClaudine. The Labour Party has really fucked this up. An elegant departure was exactly what she should have had and deserved.

DuncinToffee · 29/05/2024 10:30

I don't know if the Labour party as a whole has fucked it up but someone has been stirring it up with the briefing to the Times and other journalists

Abbott and Corbyn are great chums, aren’t they?

IClaudine · 29/05/2024 10:40

Yes, I wonder who briefed the Times. I do think Starmer is under attack from the left wing of the party.

Meanwhile, Jess Phillips has written to Sunk about the lettuce. Good for her.

I must get off MN now. But there is so much happening!

Q: You got the sleeper train here & not the chopper... why the train?

Rishi Sunak: "The train was great... I've been taking lots of pictures & videos & sending them back to the kids.. "

Yeah it was definitely better when they were keeping him away from the media.

Musing to myself, I remember that after the 1979 drubbing, Labour swung hard left.

There is a certain symmetry in the fact it's increasingly likely the Tories will tack hard right from July 5th.

Yes I wondered who briefed them too.

I'm not the biggest fan of Streeting but he genuinely seemed surprised about the announcement and had a differing understanding of the situation than reported. And I felt sorry for him that the journalists wouldn't accept that because they didn't like the answer.

I feel sorry for any politician in that situation.

That's why I hated Morgan during covid. Even when his questions were answered he wasn't happy unless they were answered with the answer being what he felt should happen.

I get most politicians skirt an issue. But sometimes they can answer and will.

It happened the other week with Starmer on R4. He was honest his pledges are changing due to finances changing and having to prioritise. He said in an ideal world he'd do them all straight off. It was very clear and I felt the question was answered. But the next 5 minutes were a repeat of "so why aren't you doing x" and "would you do x if finances allowed".

I wanted to scream at the radio "we've had that answer - I'd like to hear more challenge and answers to different questions"

No wonder the media is often a negative catalyst to incorrect news. It appears some journalists aren't clever enough to adjust their questions or think of new questions when they get answers. Although I accept actually getting a straight answer to a straight question is probably not something they've learned to deal with!

Rant over!

Something for Sunak to discuss whilst he is in the south west.

The Conservatives will abolish the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to pay for National Service -

Surprising first pledge from Conservatives. UK Shared Prosperity Fund is £1.5bn a year spent in poorest regions, with parts of Wales, Cornwall and the North East getting most.

It's not v well designed, but if you're focused on levelling up not obvious you'd choose to abolish it.

Ah Rishi, it's like a channel 4 series 'uber-rich man goes around the UK marveling at the experiences of/life as a normal person for a few weeks, then decides he doesn't like it and runs off to California'

You can almost see the wonder in his eyes, a life that he's never experienced before, and will never experience again, almost like he's landed on the moon!

Doesn't the twat realise that basically he's telling us that travelling by train is an excitingly quaint novelty for him and his family?

More information on the Rwanda report

https://x.com/matt_dathan/status/1795788317843157320

There's a particularly damning report out today by the @CommonsPAC on the government's Rwanda scheme and asylum accommodation:

  • Rishi Sunak's efforts to end the use of hotels have cost the taxpayer £46 million more than if the @ukhomeoffice had simply retained the use of hotels
  • This is because "unacceptable and avoidable mistakes" had led to a failure to protect value for money.
  • Home Office estimated it would cost just £10m to set up asylum accommodation at the former military sites at Wethersfield and Scampton when in fact costs spiralled to £76m.
  • The committee said it has "little confidence" in the Home Office's ability to implement the Rwanda scheme as it has no "credible plan" to do so.
  • Also says it has "little confidence" in the Home Office's understanding of the costs of the scheme, particularly given its poor track record in delivering other major projects.

If the Home Office carries out the Public Accounts Committee's recommendation, it would mean releasing all financial assessments on the Rwanda plan and various asylum, small boat and accommodation policies days before the general election

That’s not going to happen. Unless some obliging civil servant leaks it, of course.
