Still catching up.

But listened to Sunak on R4 this morning.

He's like an angry schoolboy bully.

Kevan Jones, Labour, is standing down for health reasons

I would be surprised if it doesn’t come out that he was going to lose the Tory leadership or something along those lines. It’ll be something entirely self serving. Also seem to be some rumours that this was always the plan and in fact the chaos is designed to put Labour on the back foot. Thing is these decisions are always taken by a tiny group of people so it’s entirely plausible it’s been on the works and they didn’t even bother to inform the Cabinet.

This is pretty much my guess. They tried to force his hand by telling him they were very close to having enough letters for a VONC. Presumably thinking they could get him to resign. Rishi then surprised them by calling a GE which they weren’t expecting. Not because he was playing politics (he’s awful at that) but because he was tetchy.

Mostly he gets everything he wants this way. Nothing’s getting better for the Tories between here & Dec/Jan. potentially it’ll get a lot worse. He doesn’t really need to stay on until the last possible moment even if he wanted to so it isn’t much of a loss. And now he can be in the US for the start of the school year so his wife is happy too.

Not convinced he was actually sure what he was going to do at 12.45.

It seems the Conservatives currently have 93 vacant seats - vetting & selection is going to be a nightmare to complete at speed.

Actually Kate McCann is saying 150.

They’ll probably skip the vetting.

As an aside, I've already taken a picture of my elite cats in preparation for the Cat Tax of next thread, as I suspect that this one will fill up quickly Wink

I have ‘shave the cat’ on my holiday to do list (bit niche, but this is my life…long haired cat+moulting+heat = need for fir sculpting). She’s not a fan. It won’t be pretty. I’ll try to photograph…

dontcallmelen · 23/05/2024 18:00

Some of the vetting of previous/present incumbents didn’t appear to be that robust, imagine quite a few more bonkers applicants will be selected.

Conservative HQ have sent budding candidates a list of 93 seats - current Cons seats and winnables - for which they can apply by 1pm on Saturday.

So that’s Rwanda gone then. Just think what that wasted money could have done. It makes me want to weep.

I started a thread on the death of the Rwanda scheme in AIBU.

Sunak lost his disgusting bet with Piers Morgan

I forgot about that!

Igotjelly · 23/05/2024 18:27

The death of the Rwanda policy is a win for common decency however objectively what a monumental waste of taxpayer money in a time when our services are so chronically underfunded.

Not to mention the mental health impact such policies have on those in our country who would be most impacted. Shameful!

That's brave. Let me pop over there to lend support, I'm sure there will be plenty of idiots on it.

It's being largely ignored for some reason, can't think why! Tee hee.

BIossomtoes · 23/05/2024 18:34

If you’d put Rwanda in the title they’d have been on it like a tramp on chips.

AdamRyan · 23/05/2024 18:37

It's strangely quiet. I'm on a "who do GC women vote for" thread and it's refreshingly different

Just catching up after the news yesterday!!
It was bizarre timing but as some of you have mentioned there is probably all kinds of fuckwhittery and plots behind the scenes. I am going with letters in ( or very nearly) so Sunak does what others didn't think he would dare. Either that or there is something very big we don't yet know about, war, sleaze, scandal, an even emptier wallet than we thought. Who knows.... BUT I am delighted the deed is done.
In related news my constituency has new independent contender, he is very well thought of locally, already a councillor and a great advocate for our town. I am hoping he will get the support he deserves.

ThatbloodyRoblox · 23/05/2024 18:49

Oh and in other news our current Mp who is a stranger around this town is stepping down after about 20 years or so and we got a poxy 46 word tweet. Very short and to the point. Effort was never one of his string points. 🤣

Apparently according to Sky news, Matt Hancock and Bob stewart have had the Tory whip restored. The phrase scraping the barrel comes to mind. https://x.com/SkyNews/status/1793700157856293355?t=IFMCKiHf9wilJDHswvn8ig&s=19

As you say, that really is scraping the bottom of the barrel.
And they've no idea excuse regarding vetting.
