It all feels a bit "last days of Rome," doesn't it?

DuncinToffee · 24/05/2024 23:30

It is just getting weirder and weirder now with Sunak's rest day

Well, he's increased his family wealth by more than £120 million in just the last year, so the plan has obviously worked up to now...

BestIsWest · 24/05/2024 23:31

I’ve never really understood his motivation for the job, even less so now. It’s clear he wants to be out of there.

TokyoSushi · 24/05/2024 23:36

It's just going to be 6 weeks of humiliation culminating in the worst loss in many many years. I honestly couldn't be bothered with it, and I'm not sure he will be either. Goodness knows who they'll put in as temporary leader though, who would want to do that? Most people that you've heard of are leaving...

Evenstar · 24/05/2024 23:43

I am seeing rumours that it could be Cameron, I imagine that would be possible when Parliament isn’t sitting as an interim measure at least.

TokyoSushi · 24/05/2024 23:50

Yes I think that's most likely, Twitter seems to think Dowden & Hunt might stand down over the weekend... I think this election still holds a few (many) more surprises!!

IClaudine · 24/05/2024 23:53

Would Cameron really want to take over, though? It will be an embarrassing defeat for him.

TokyoSushi · 24/05/2024 23:57

I think somebody will take over but won't even try to win, they'll just be like I'm going to be the PM and 'look after you all' while 'all this' (waves hands) takes place, then I'll be off, and Keir will take it from there.

The best person to do that probably would be Cameron, because a) he knows the logistics at least of how to be PM and b) I don't think he'll take a constituency, so won't really have any skin in the game as such, he'll just say I'm doing this as a kind of 'supply PM' for 6 weeks, then that's it. What a time to be alive, they've well & truly fucked it! (I may have had gin)

TokyoSushi · 24/05/2024 23:59

We'll almost have come full circle, started & ended with call me Dave. Right, I'm going to bed, I've a feeling in my bones it's going to be an interesting weekend!

Evenstar · 25/05/2024 00:00

He would have to renounce his peerage to stand as an MP so I think it’s unlikely he would do that.

TokyoSushi · 25/05/2024 00:02

I think we might be entering uncharted territory...

I think you might be right!

Is that what Alec Douglas Home did?

Evenstar · 25/05/2024 00:15

@tobee yes and Tony Benn

Thank you. Just googling the timelines. I knew they renounced them but couldn't remember if they had to or chose to .

Johnson is attacking Starmer in the DM, callin him the most dangerous and left wing Labour PM since 1970, which explains quite a few posts on MN

🤣
Honestly.

Notonthestairs · 25/05/2024 00:22

Flipping hell. I've spent the last hour collecting & depositing teenagers and returned home to rumours of Call Me Dave back in No. 10.
Speechless.

BestIsWest · 24/05/2024 23:18

Jess Phillips thinks Sunak is going to stand down.

I’ve been thinking this for a couple of days. Can’t see how this works for him. It’s no secret he and his wife want to leave the country ASAP. If he stands and wins his seat he’s almost certainly going to quit as an MP as soon as the election is over which would be ridiculous.

Either he quits now or he sticks himself into a seat they are guaranteed to lose.

I’m adding standing down to avoid a Portillo moment to my list of reasons to dislike Gove. Way to spoil the election party.

HannibalHeyes · 25/05/2024 01:02

Someone will be game for taking on the PM ship until the election, as it will give them a huge pension.

Bloody hell. I missed all of the rumour shenanigans last night. This is insane territory!

Sunak’s taking the day off tomorrow and spending it at home. What on Earth is going on?

The rest of the Tory party will probably be very grateful for this.

D'oh! How stupid we have been. When he banged on about the plan I thought he meant for the country! You're so right.

LittleBowSheep · 25/05/2024 04:00

The rest of the Tory party will probably be very grateful for this.

Well so far he’s:
Called an election in a torrential downpour, with a backing theme tune of ‘things can only get better’
thrown out a sky news reporter from the launch event live on air
abandoned his flagship Rwanda and anti smoking legislation despite these being the only things that might constitute a ‘legacy’
gone to meet the people but only the ones he’s planted as fake workers
had his photo taken in front of an exit sign
held a press conference in the ‘titanic quarter’
sent the local Belfast media to the wrong place for the press conference twice

Staying home could only help his chances at this point.
