What's your MN Niggle

Mine is when the thread is something along the lines of "what's your favourite dinner?" Or "Worst holiday you've ever been on?" And OP replies to every single post!

OP posts:

TigerRag · 26/02/2024 13:21

Could also be dickhead?

Over 95% of times DH whether they intended to or not does mean dick head on these forums!

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 26/02/2024 13:10

They're internet forum shorthand. Saves time. And using jargon and argot help to foster a sense of community and belonging amongst members of a community.

But some can be troublesome: DS - son or sister? DP - parents or partner? BF -best friend, boyfriend, breast feeding?
The meaning is usually easily discernable from context, but can be confusing in more complex scenarios with a big "cast"!

’big cast’ haha! I’m quite partial to a big cast thread, except the ones where the names are A,B,C and D

At the moment I’m pissed off that that the Thanks feature hasn’t taken off.

Though of course it may just be that my posts don’t inspire gratitude 😁

But I am committed, and I will carry on thanking in the hope that it catches on.

Oooh I didn't even know that was here!

Husband wife daughter son would suffice. Not a fan of the ones you said

Yes, I'm definitely going to type out h-u-s-b-a-n-d on my phone when I could just type DH...

marshmallowfinder · 26/02/2024 18:45

Geebray · 26/02/2024 18:33

Yes, I'm definitely going to type out h-u-s-b-a-n-d on my phone when I could just type DH...

Or just type H?

BCBird · 26/02/2024 18:47

For me it's how nasty the tgread turns. Don't understand why. I just stop reading

Geebray · 26/02/2024 18:50

marshmallowfinder · 26/02/2024 18:45

Or just type H?

It's just forum usage. DH, DP, OH. Two letters work better than one. Forums were around before Mumsnet, you know...

LovelyTheresa · 26/02/2024 18:50

MovingBird123 · 26/02/2024 10:45

The orgy of anti-Israel lies and sudden experts who really don't know anything about the situation...

This. The propaganda is outrageous.

TigerRag · 26/02/2024 19:41

Tessisme · 25/02/2024 22:39

When posters use 'they' because obviously strangers on the internet knowing the sex of the person being discussed might be 'outing'. Half the time the poster gives it away somewhere with a random 'she' or 'him' and the rest of the time the sex of the person is obvious anyway.

I don't think I've ever been on another forum or social media where everything is supposedly "outing"

Meowandthen · 26/02/2024 20:56

People who are clearly posting just to pick a fight or are being deliberately obtuse. It’s pathetic.

Also, I invariably read DH as dickhead. Most are far from dear.

WildFlowerBees · 26/02/2024 21:15

People who make things up from the op, sometimes I wonder how they've come to a certain conclusion from the concise op.

For example

AIBU to have given my guests pasta for dinner instead of something a little more 'posh' no one complained but I think I probably let myself down with carbonara.

Poster, why would you give pasta to guests when you know they don't like it? You sound awful.

Also those who announce themselves

Nurse here
Teacher here
Man here

Finally those who are just rude and really quite mean when there's really no need.

ValleyClouds · 26/02/2024 21:57

I was on a thread once when another poster pounced on me and demanded to know how I knew the child's age as it wasn't in the OP in a very Who The Fuck Are You? disdain. It was in the thread title. People pick fights just to pick fights. Like, I've had a bad day let's go and find someone to be superior to and make sure they know it. I don't need MN strangers for that I've got an obnoxious sister

StarlightLime · 26/02/2024 22:01

Two letters work better than one
🤣 No, they don't.

NinaPersson · 27/02/2024 07:39

It doesn’t really take that long to type out husband, which is definitely quicker than h-u-s-b-a-n-d 😂@Geebray

Like I said, it’s the dear/ darling part which niggles me, it sounds twee and more often than not contradicts whatever the post is on about.

From now on I think I’ll read it as dickhead husband, difficult daughter, disobedient son

And yeah for quickness why don’t you just type H?

Rosestulips · 27/02/2024 07:56

People who end their sentence with … instead of just a full stop.

HeraSyndulla · 27/02/2024 08:04

Playground name calling, prick wanker twat. Grow up.

Zyq · 27/02/2024 09:54

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 25/02/2024 17:36

Mine is the length of time it takes for MNHQ to take down troll posts.

I find their attitude to this, and also to troll hunting posts, really odd. They claim they are absolutely against the rules, but don't seem to do even basic detective work using AS to check them out and delete them, and are very slow to take them down when they are reported. Unsurprisingly, it effectively encourages people to troll hunt on the relevant threads because MN chooses to give the impression that actually they're not that bothered.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/02/2024 10:25

‘Judgy’. I only ever see it on here.

‘That doesn’t work for me.’ Does anyone in RL ever actually say it? WTF is wrong with, ‘Sorry, too busy,’ or just ‘No, not convenient,’ or just, ‘No, I can’t.’

Aplaceinthecold · 27/02/2024 10:46

Lentils, always the bloody answer to everything.

Lentils, always the bloody answer to everything.

At least they’re the relatively cheap answer to making mince in any dish go quite a bit further.

Aplaceinthecold · 27/02/2024 10:56

Yep, lentils do make things go further.
Straight from the dish, past the plate and into the bin.

idrinkandiknowthings · 28/02/2024 14:10

Long posts without paragraphs. If I click on a post and see that it's a huge block of text with no breaks I instantly click off.

jm9138 · 28/02/2024 14:24

Not sure if it is a niggle, but where you are commenting on something where you actually know a hell of a lot about it (maybe because it has been your profession for almost forever) and posters speak to you like you know nothing and you don't want to say 'err, I think I do because it is my job' because you don't want to seem smarmy.

GloriaMundy · 28/02/2024 18:10

@jm9138 , mine posted upthread is the exact opposite. Someone posts something that is badly written or barely comprehensible, and definitely not correct, but other posters point it out they claim to be an expert on the subject (multiple degrees or professional qualifications + x number of years' experience).
